[NOT HAPPENING] Rafael Borre

Martin Devaney was who I was thinking of. Junior and Sietes were more like recent signings. From memory Sietes was with us for a season.

 

Martin “Disco” Devaney was a lunatic by all accounts - did he get into a fight with a member of staff on a pre-season tour and was promptly shown the door ?

 

Do people realise how small this guy is? He's the same height as Cleverley, shorter than Gray, even shorter than Deulofeu! It's inevitable that our defenders are going to panic, hoof the ball forward a lot and it's just going to come right back at us with this thimble up there.

 

I remember the Aussie guy who played a friendly for us against Brook House. Chad something? Scored a hat trick if I remember then disappeared.

 

Sign him and Solanke and our problems up front are over.

Get a Borre-Dom partnership and we're sorted.

Unlike the current situation when we hoof it up to Deeney and the best case scenario is that he wins his header and flicks it on 30 metres away from his strike partner, waves his hands and complains his strike partner couldn't predict where it would go and it comes straight back to us after their defenders / goalkeepers recycle possession.

Height is relevant, but it isn't everything. Perica is tall and he is soft as a tissue. JP is quite small and yet he does a far better job of holding it up.

 

That’s pretty presumptuous - I mean, there’s no way you can expect Troost-Ekong to even accurately get the ball up that far for a start.

Admittedly we'd be heavily reliant on wind gusts to get the ball anywhere near Borre.

 

We can’t afford to pay much in transfer fees, so wouldn’t be surprised if we got Borre, Cucho, Fletcher and Young for no transfer fees. Interesting article on BBC sport about Norwich(can’t copy link) who have said they will not spending big to stay in the PL and would have gone into admin had they not sold Maddison etc;and that the notion that PL football brings riches is a nonsense. Wouldn’t be surprised if we use this year to try and balance the books

 

It's probably the most sensible outlook. We will be battling with the other promoted teams, along with Palarse, Brighton, Burnley, Saints and Newcastle we could just about have enough to scrape through.

 

Norwich already widely reported to be spending £20m just to convert two of their loans (Giannoulis and Gibson) into permanent deals. Also being strongly linked with Adarabioyo and Bornauw who would cost £10m+ each.

I don’t think they will go banana’s - but I doubt they will do what they did last time and be uncompetitive and pocket the cash either.

But they will likely offset all that cost by selling Buendia and/or Aarons.

Be like us strengthening in a number of positions but selling Sarr to do so....

 

The hype around Aarons is nuts - I think that selling him would be intelligent business by Norwich. Don't get me wrong - I think he is a good player, but if he wasn't young and English he would be worth 1/2 of the fee being talked about.

Buendia would be an unbelievable miss for them though. Their record with and without him even in the championship is night and day. Losing him for £40m and replacing him with Giannoulis, Gibson, Tosin and Bornauw would be awful business.

 

I get Norwich's model, but selling Buendia would be insane, why sell your best player unless you absolutely have to? We wouldn't dream of selling Sarr this season, we'd get our arses served to us if we did!

If they made a promise to sell him this summer if he stayed last summer and helped them back to the PL, then you can see why I guess. Look how players we made similar promises to reacted in their performances when we denied them promised transfers. Hindsight tells us we definitely should have sold Doucoure and pocketed the great money on offer.

If they can get £45m for Buendia and replace him with three £15m players, it may well leave them in a better position to stay up. Not saying it will - its just not inconceivable.

 

The point in them selling him isnt to spend that money. They would spend it on just one 15m player and 30m into the bank. We would sell Sarr and spend the lot on tripe.

 

But just imagine how many 5 year contracts we could hand out to middle aged centre backs.

 

Maybe. But I do think Norwich won’t just try and repeat the same as last time. It’s not sustainable to think you can just repeatedly get promoted from the Championship. At some point you have to make a real stab at staying in the PL.

I think that’s what they will try and do this season. Whether they definitely need a mercurial talent like Buendia to do that, or 2-4 quality squad additions instead, time will tell I guess. But it was the depth that cost them last time.

Admittedly this is a concern, but he's called Rafael. That has to count for something?
