Surely Cleverley is hardly going to kick a ball for us now? He's got to be comfortably behind Etebo, Kucka, Sissoko, Tufan and possibly even Louza in the pecking order.

I don't see the sense in picking a new captain, for what really is a new era, who is 32 himself and likely isn't going to (and shouldn't) be playing much.

Give it to Ekong for now and make Sierralta vice-captain.

Why would you think that that kind of logic will be applied? Troost-Ekong will end up wearing the armband most weeks but when Cleverley is in it'll be him I reckon.

True. Maybe Cleverley captain, Cathcart vice and Foster third? Lovely stuff.

Don't some clubs have a club captain and a team captain? I mean, WTE is perfectly suitable to be captain and will surely play most games, but still

Proper Brexit stuff; no responsibility for any of them Johnny foreigners, thanks. How can you expect a person to motivate the team if they don't sleep beneath a picture of the Queen?!

El Gaucho. And he must play whenever fit.

Surely it also depends on just how much Xisco plans on using Cathcart? Given he was preferred to WTE as captain against Spurs.

I really don’t think he’s going to give it to WTE officially. It’ll be Cleverley, followed by Cathcart - but WTE will end up wearing it on occasions too due to game time for the former two.

Sadly the summers contractual situation has messed up any plans for a new, younger captain. I’ve no doubt Chalobah would have been given it followed by Hughes maybe had they stayed.

As it stands, we have a choice between 2 old players who shouldn’t be starting games and a CB who we ideally replace in the starting line-up in the next 6-12 months.

Bit in bold is exactly what I said in my first reply. Seems in keeping with how it’s been handled in Deeney’s absence.

I imagine the Duxbury will have retired the captain’s armband now that Deeney is gone. They’ll hang a large replica of it from the rafters in the Elton John stand.

It’ll have to be a leg band or something now.

Tufan is definitely looking a little chubby.

    Club captain. Cathcart.

Team captain Kucka, Tufan or Sissoko. Three experienced internationals who are vocal and organize. All three have been captains in the past.

This is a good shout Smudger, it will possibly be either Cathcart or Cleverly as club captain, but as neither of them are likely to be regular starters, there will probably be a sub team of vice-captains who will stand in for whoever is named club captain when they are not actually on the pitch.

Literally no idea why people want to make the likes of Cathcart or Cleverley club captain. Zero forward thinking. Two old cloggers who aren't good enough for and shouldn't be anywhere near the match day squad, and may well be gone this time next year.

Trouble is most of the squad might be next season - particularity if we go down.

Long term is there a definite captain?

If we stay up then someone like Sierralta would fit the role.

TBH I was a bit surprised WTE wasn't captain last week but then guess after the mess up week before maybe Munoz didn't think it was a good idea.

What I think will happen: Cleverly club captain, with Troost or Cathcart team captain when he doesn't play.

What I would like to see: Use the captaincy to convince Sierralta to sign a new five year deal, supported by a leadership group of Troost, Cleverly, Sissoko and Rose (he is a 29 cap England international and I think a leadership role would bring the best out of him).

While the position of captain in football has no where near the practical importance that it does in cricket or even rugby, I think there is a certain cache or status that comes with the role that might influence his view on whether he wants to spend the next phase of his career here. Or he might be completely indifferent - I don't know him personally.

I'd say it's whoever is best on the pitch at sh#thousing and influencing the ref. Small margins in the Prem, and Troy was always in their ears. Otherwise, until a clear candidate emerges, it should be the most experienced player on the pitch at the time.

Does he even speak English yet? Apparently Sierralta does, haven't heard anything about Sarr (if not, it's lucky we have a few more French speakers around him this season!)

Sarr was answer to who is pen taker . Not sure if he’s cap material though .
