New Captain

Obviously we are now in need of a new team and club captain?

Suggestions on a postcard please.

Cleverley and Cathcart will be the obvious ones on the list based on recent appearances, however I would like us to go with someone younger.

Our moves in the window this summer have suggested we trending younger, and so I think we move for a younger captain.

He is not the best footballer in our team but in terms of leadership I don’t think we need to look any further than Troost-Ekong. Seems to be unanimously liked and respected, as well as being responsible for the players getting together for that little heart to heart last season.

 

It'll be Cleverley.

WTE didn't even get it on Saturday and they went with Cathcart.

If Tufan impresses and gets the deal made permanent, he'd be an option in the future as he captained Fenerbahce. I really believed Chalobah would be our captain going forward and he was a great captain last season in the run-in. Shame thats ended how it has.

 

Has to be Troost. I don't see the point in having a club captain that isn't going to be on the pitch.

 

Bachmann has the loudest voice.

No brainer.

 

Might be Sissoko. Likely a starter every week, and has that mean look. Would make a good captain just by the look.

 

Kiko.

 

An absolute warrior

 

My son was one of the winners of the Junior Hornets competition to get a tour of the training ground with WTE, followed by a Q&A.

He was a really nice, articulate guy. Definitely captain material, though possibly too nice.

One of the questions someone asked was "who is the funniest person in the squad?". He said it was Cathcart - always very quiet, but when he does speak, it's hilarious and has everyone in stitches.

Cleverly strikes me as too boring to be captain.

 

WTE and Cleverley are the obvious candidates, its just a bit of an awkward choice as they're both crap

Interesting insight into his character and it would be very Watfordy to make a competition winner captain, but I think your son is probably too young.

 

This genuinely made me laugh out loud. Obviously my brain has been ravaged by the pandemic.

 

My bet is WTE. He seems set to be first choice partner for Sierralta so he'll almost certainly be on the pitch.

I don't see Cleverley getting much game time if Kucka, Sissoko, Etebo and Tufan are all fit.

Should probably be Troost. Good enough or not he's going to start every week, and as crap as he might be at actually kicking a football, he does seem a leader.

Cleverley will likely be fourth or fifth choice in midfield and should be nowhere near the team or captaincy.

 

Definitely Sarr.

He would lead by example, without needing to utter a single word of English.

You know its gonna happen.

 

Cathcart is now our longest serving player and this will be his 9th season. Clevs is very professional, down to earth and level headed. Remember his line last season after we all sh@t the bed when we lost at the kennel? 'There's no need to panic'. Calm under fire and spot on. Troost is the obvious choice after being responsible for turning round our season in the champo. JP actually called him 'captain' on social media around that time. There are also some newbies with captain potential.

I think the key thing this season is to have multiple leaders in the dressing room and leaders all over the pitch rather than a 'Main Main'. Jamie Vardy was asked recently about being the main man at Leicester. He said he's never seen himself that way, always just wanted to help the team. Top lad, that's exactly the mentality we need at WFC.

I loved Bachmann's quote last season that 'everyone is a leader'. We need everyone to step up and lead in their own way this season if we are going to stay up. No egos, no a$$holes, just everyone fighting for each other and the club.

 

Now that we have not signed anyone to replace him in the team, it has to be Troost.

Cant really be any of the new signings and Sarr is too young and prob not captain material, which leaves any of the back 5.
Cant be Massina as he needs to be dropped for Rose. Cant really be Rose as he is new signing and probably not that type of character.
Cant be Kiko, or Ngakia. Cathcart wont be starting once Kiko is back and also on the back of NGakias solid performance at Spurs.
Cant be Bachmann becuase how can you dish out a bollocking when you ve let in two howlers in the first 10 mins.

Which leaves Troost or Sierralta, Sierralta is too good looking to be captain material which means by default its Troost.

Do it my like my offspring's yoof teams. Pick one each game and have done with it. As the saying goes, these are grown-*** men. They shouldn't need someone "leading them" in anything other than shouting at the ref. Which, although utterly pointless, is a part of the game and by having a designated raging gesticulator, we cut down on the yellow cards.

 

It’ll be Clevz, Cathcart, WTE in that order I’d have thought. After that who knows.
