I don't mind him not rating him as a Watford player, but can't get my head round suggesting a midfielder shouldn't be getting forward or indeed suggesting he's rubbish, when he's quite clearly not.

I am not carrying this on again today, but where did I say that a midfielder shouldn't get forward or indeed suggest he's rubbish all I said was he can't tackle or head a ball, if you want to make thing up don't put my name to it

You said because he's protecting the full-backs, what's he doing in the penalty area scoring a goal. By that logic, you'll be outraged if Behrami/Capoue score any this season as they're not protecting the centre-backs. Bet Connolly's goal against Forest last year made your blood boil.

I agree, I won't criticize another Watford player again, I apologize for having an opinion which may differ from the rest

    It might be true actually.

No one really knows because his positional awareness is so dreadful he's very rarely there to make the tackle...

Paredes made 39 apps in the team that got promoted including the run of 5 wins (1 goal conceded) at the end of the season. Bear in mind this was his first year outside of Ecuador. Thought we were past all this.

Paredes is bloody strong for his pretty slight frame. It must be something about the Ecuadorian physiology. Some player, I'm not sure who, once said his least favourite opposing player was Antonio Valencia because when he tackled you it felt like getting hit by a van. I saw a bit of the same in Paredes, especially when he totally ruined a Brighton player.

I always thought he did a good job for us last season, others were pretty tough on him. The way I see it, wingback is one of those positions where you are unequivocally going to let people in behind you occasionally . That isn't poor positional play, it's part of uusing a formation with wingbacks, and it's why there are three centre backs to deal with it.

And it explains why we won't be using that formation this season. "Occasionally" becomes "regularly" & the opposition attacking midfielders will rapidly exploit the spaces between the 3 centre backs caused by the process of covering across.

If we're playing a team who like wide players, Nyom and Paredes down the right, Holebas and Layun down the left is pretty strong and defensively doubles up both wings.

At home or against a side who play more centrally I'd get Jurado/Berghuis/Diamontii in the wider positions of a 3 attacking midfield.

We DEFINITELY got promoted by shutting teams out for 1-0 wins week in week out.

I watched against Everton. He still hasn't learnt the first thing about positioning. I'm not a fan.

Give him a chance, Quique was a full back remember, I'm sure he can help Paredes out if he makes the squad.

when we started playing watson, fans started saying paredes was less crap which i think is testament to the fact that the wingback system prejudices wingbacks who don't have adequate cover. it's also testament to the fact that most of our fans are unable to see the game holistically

Tell me what you know about the formation? ... infact can you explain what formation it actually was when Parades was on the pitch and why?

Half the press aren't even close so don't look at them!

Formations do not overwrite basic skills.

Did you SEE him get caught under the ball with no idea of its flight on Saturday?

    It's something he does repeatedly.

I don't want to start an 'I rate him - you don't - give him a chance etc etc' argument. My opinion is that he is not strong in the tackle and would get taken apart at this level if played as a full back. I'm sorry about that.

    LAYUN WATCH

Not much to report in this week's edition of Layun Watch, for obvious reasons. Still, the Mexican press are showing an interest in us (well, more Miguel) - i'm curious to see how long they keep it up. Particularly if he falls to the bench. Or worse. For now, it's all good publicity for the club.

the article finishes (i think - it's close enough to portuguese that i think i can read it, but it's also different enough for me to know that i can't really) by saying he played in the volante position, which is *******s. Volante is the defensive midfielder rather than the attacking one.

I see Ake has signed then, QSF seems to think he is better at left back even if JH93 doesn't

Assuming LayĂșn goes, who else do we think could go now? Going to be optimistic and assume Vydra stays.
