C'mon Moosedog ... Flat back fours do not exist at this level anymore, even when not in possession. If someone provides cover for a marauding fullback you may not even see him chase back but rather take up a position in space in anticipation of a turnover. Watch any top Spanish/South American teams and it's all rather fluid, players pop up in all sorts of unexpected positions and none of it by accident.

And at last we have a Spanish manager coach.

Will you look through what I have written and tell me where I have said he did not have a good game on Saturday, I only said that he is not a left back or wing back for the reasons given, look at the stats that someone else has posted, last season he won less than one tackle a game and a header one in very two. Don't be selective in what you choose to read and spin it to suit you

Yeah I've seen what you've spouted. You said he's no left back/wing back after he put in a good game as a winger. You've said he definitely won't start when everyone is fit because presumably you're Quique Sanchez Flores. Nice to talk to you btw Quique. And you've made all these judgments after seeing him play a total of about 13 full games, out of position, in a new team, a new league, a new country, half way through the campaign with no pre-season.

Anyone know his stats from LB for the Gold Cup winners where he started every game and played 90 mins in all but one?

I'll give you one, an own goal, but that's being flippant

I thought he played well. I don't know where all this criticism is coming from. Goodison is one of the toughest places to get points and a newly promoted team did just that.

Layun can play as a wing back as long as he has plenty of defensive support, that was the one thing that i criticized him on mexico for. But i think that was partly due to piojo's formation that we relied heavily on fullbacks because it was the only way to get any width.

I see he started 18 games for you last season in the championship, how many total were played from when he got there? He is definitely good enough to start for your club and may be the most talented player there. The only problem is he reminds me of Andres guardado, he doesn't really have a position. He can play in a midfield 3, as a winger, or even a wingback. It just depends.

It disappoints me he gets so much hate on herr, but i believe he will grow on you guys. He is a solid player, with good passing ability, a great engine, and a hell of a shot. Just give him time to adjust to being on a new continent.

  6. I think he was in his perfect role (defensive winger) on Saturday and it showed. He was excellent.

I can't recall seeing him as a full back but in the championship he was poor as a wing back and non existent as a centre mid.

Can I ask you a question? why do you say he needs a lot of defensive support when playing wing back and you don't mention at all playing full back

Moosedog, I asked you a question back at #448 about fullbacks, any chance you could answer that one?

Because when he played wing back he played almost soley as a winger. I have rarely seen him play as a full back because both Mexico and america used a 3-5-2.

  11. Moosedog

Read 500 he doesn't play full back for Mexico and it doesn't sound like he plays a typical wing back role either, Playing in England is different to Mexico, he didn't have such a great time in Italy

I honestly have no idea what your point is anymore Moosedog. Are you saying he's cr@p at full back? Because the two games he's played for Quique have been further forward. Or are you saying he's cr@p in general? Because Saturday has shown that he's clearly not. Either way I think the guys who pick him for Mexico and our coaches who see him in training have much more of an idea about where to get the best out of him for the team.

Your easily baffled, but you have kept me entertained all day, you have done it again I have never said he is crap anywhere, I said he is not a full back or wing back you must read things properly, I bet you were great at exams answering what you thought the question said not what it really said

Surely you actually mean he's not your idea of a fullback or wingback because everyone else seems to disagree?

Personally I think he's going to be a massive hit now we have a coach that will use him properly.

So you havn't actually seen him play there then. Unlike the guy who has followed his career and wrote this about his time in the Mexican national team...

"Layun has been a thriving force in the attack despite being a defender. He can play as a left-back or right-back with the same effectiveness".

    ...in this article.

    But you know best.

You can .... but those two shots on Saturday are just a sign of what's to come. He was never in the position last season at all.

(And unlike McGugan, if he can see a better route he'll use it)

But he isn't being played at full back or at wing back? You clearly don't understand what his role was on Saturday so I think this argument is pretty futile. You said we'll see on September 1st, I think the only thing we'll be seeing is you looking like even more of a ***!

Oh and I bet you were great at exams with that shocking grammar... :sign15:

Oh and here you go Moosedog. You've listed some faults of his here yet you say you haven't called him crap, so what do you think Layun does well? Or do you in fact think he's crap?

Club football fans are fickle and things change at clubs in this country so fast now it's ridiculous.

He puts in good performances, gets selected, becomes important ... people will like him.

You can say fans expect players too adapt too quickly, but those are becoming the demands of the league system they're supporting their team through.

    It's crazy, I know.

Was he a regular starter in your push to promotion? I didn't have access to Championship games so I'm not sure, though i was excited when he decided to go to Watford.

I understand the demands of the game, especially in the EPL, I've been supporting Chelsea for about 10 years (i just turned 21) but this is a guy who has spent his whole career on a different continent with a different playing style where he was a star player on his team. He deserves perhaps a bit of respect for even making the move, and to me it seems he has adapted just fine. But I'm sure Watford fans will come appreciate him more in the coming weeks.

i didnt like layun at all last season. thought he was very average and very weak physically, however, its a new season, a new manager with a new way of playing and if he makes the team saturday ill give him the same cheer i give all the others.

never seems to finish a game though!

  27. Godfather

    Godfather bricklayer extraordinaire

Agreed ... And yes he was integral to the team that got us promoted though it appears that some fans can't accept that.

I had my eye on him for the Gold cup, he did his job well and also took up some very intelligent positions should the ball break his way in or near the box. More goals like Saturday's shouldn't be unexpected, it was actually quite typical.

  28. Godfather

The demands of the British game are not to be underestimated but he hadn't run out of steam. However after an hour Everton were starting to pin us back, bringing on a stronger in the tackle Paredes was a logical decision.

On a serious note, most Watford fans do appreciate layun. The majority of the rest will follow soon enough. Of course there will be some stubborn and prejudiced few who will swear he's crap until the end of days, even in the face of evidence to the contrary, but that's football fans for you.

He was shyte last year, had a good summer, and did well against Everton.
