Benitez, although he would never come here.

He likes to use and develop young players. He’d hate it here.

I think Benitez is increasingly looking like Ranieri and even Hodgson, his best days are long behind him now.

Rodgers had previously taken Liverpool from 7th to 2nd, while Steven Gerrard is Steven Gerrard (plus won Rangers their first league title in 10 years).

Postecoglou is a nobody relative to those two who I can't envisage any "upwardly mobile mid table PL sides" taking a punt on. We could well be his best bet for managing in the PL.

He may have signed a few players from Japan, but there is nothing to build at Celtic - once he's won the league at Celtic, which seems highly likely this season, there's nothing more to do. Plus I'm sure the Pozzos won't be entirely averse to picking up any more potential bargains in the transfer market like Hatate if he knows any.

I was worried by his spell at Everton, but they seem like a rich version of us these days, no matter the manager they look ****.

Would still say he's worth a punt though.

Not a chance this would work there is no way Ange would put up with the Pozzos ****. Just take a look at how many times he has called out the Celtic board. He is absolutely loved by Celtic fans, will win silverware play in Europe and in front of 60,000 fans every home game he would be bonkers to leave Celtic to come and manage us in the championship under Gino.

There’s no way he would leave Celtic for Watford, with our reputation, in the Championship.

Rooney? Making miracles happen at Derby and might be ready to go to a next level club next season.

What is there to build here? He will inevitably get the sack anyway and be handed a **** team to work with.Whilst the board take no responsibility for our failures.

Rooney has a lot of credit in the bank at Derby. Also turned down an interview at Everton so not a chance he jumps ship for Watford.

I suspect he’s sitting tight waiting for the inevitable takeover and likely windfall that brings so he can build a better squad which is supplemented by the promising youngsters they have.

    Imagine that!

Diego Martinez would be my first choice. Unfortunately Joe Edwards has joined Everton as Lampards Assistant he would of been a bit of a wildcard and seems highly rated as Rodgers was.
What I want is that the new fella gets his options over in the transfer market because otherwise we all know it's not going to work.

But we know the "manager" = "coach" and has little say over signings given he is likely to be replaced within 6 months.

I think a big fundamental problem with Watford is just how our DoF/Technical Director works in the system.

Giraldi, and now Giaretta, are extensions of the owner. And work far more closely with him than with the Head Coach/Manager.

That isn’t how it should be but it is how Gino likes it - and is also a by-product of our high managerial churn.

I'd like us to go for an up and coming manager, maybe someone like Ryan Lowe, and give them time. If we end up 12th next season in the Championship but start to overhaul the playing squad and get some young exciting players playing for us (and lose the likes of Foster, Cleverley, Cathcart, Kabasele, etc) then I'd rather that than our current 'strategy'.

As a disclaimer, I've never seen Lowe's Preston or Plymouth play but I've heard good things about him and his style. But I'm sure there are others out there who are off a similar level.

Don't know about the wrong person, but it will be someone who is unpredictable. Since the Pozzos have come in, it has been impossible to guess who they are considering. The majority of appointments, I had never heard of before they were appointed (I am not a scholar of European football). Zola, Pearson, Tinkerman and Woy, I had heard of. It is fun to guess, but unlikely that anyone on this forum will get the prediction right.

Next season is surely going to be another short-term, throw everything at the wall and hope something sticks approach? Pozzo will only have 2 years of parachute money and with the PL rumoured to be closer to some sort of deal with the EFL around increasing solidarity payments we might not even have the same degree of advantage we had last time we went down. Suspect it'll be more of the same churn of coaches, playing staff etc and hope to hit on the lucky promotion formula.

Agreed. I think for as long as there are payments coming into the clubs accounts from ‘Sky/Bein/BBC/BT’ and ‘Premier League Holdings (or whatever they are called)’, then Gino will keep doing what he’s doing in regards to pretty much everything.

My main issue is that his sample size/experience is a little too brief. All he has done is come into a very exciting/well-coached MK Dons side and build on the work that Russell Martin has done. There’s less to build on here in many ways. I would be excited by his appointment and get behind him but I suspect he’d need more time to adapt than some of the others named.

@DrewH I like Eustace and would love to have him as our assistant manager but would you really want to entrust such a pivotal season to someone with no managerial record? There’s probably only one person I’d do that for right now and that’s Michael Beale (Gerrard’s assistant at Villa who is v highly rated).

Yeah, Giaretta isn’t a DoF with remit to build something, he’s there to implement Pozzbury’s vision/philosophy (if you can even call doing deals with your agent mate and trying to flog a couple of them later for profit a philosophy).

I guess the whole conversation is pointless unless Gino is willing to take his hands off the reigns and trust somebody to do something different.

Nothing about the entire Pozzo reign makes me think there’s any chance of this happening. For me, there’s no reason to believe he’ll accept the model isn’t working, and be willing to trust an outsider to build in a new direction.

Relegation is probably the best opportunity to try and carry out the sort of reset we need, but as UEA mentions above, our financial situation probably dictates that we approach things in exactly the same way we did at the start of last season - do what we can to glue a squad together and pray it comes off.

I genuinely think we end up with Deeney in charge at some point in the next 24 months. The sort of desperate PR move that absolutely stinks of Duxbury.

    ******* depressing.

A former colleague of mine is a Birmingham City season-ticket holder and he says there’s plenty of rumours up around there that Deeney is in talks with investors to be the face of a takeover bid.

I think there’s more chance of him becoming manager up there than there is down here to be honest.

Would be shocked personally. I know on some level Jokanovic and Munoz were punts but both did have some experience/success managing previously. Of all the “x number of managers Watford have appointed in 10 years” the only total novice we hired was McKinlay. It’s not really the Pozzos style. Deeney is a great guy in many ways but I don’t think he’s shown himself to be on track to be an up and coming manager and certainly not enough to entrust around £50m+ worth of playing assets in pursuit of PL football. It just doesn’t seem like something they’d do in my opinion. Also I fin it odd/unprofessional that he’d front a new ownership at Birmingham - that’s normally something for ex-players not current payroll participants surely. But they definitely do need new owners (far more than we do).

I’d like us to take a look at Arne Slot (Feyernoord), Knudsen at Bodo/Glimt and perhaps Toru Oniki (has won four titles in five years at Kawasaki Frontale in Japan - besting Postecoglou in 2/3 seasons they were up against each other. Don’t know much about him but if people want to emulate Celtic then that would be one way to do it).

Oniki has absolutely zero football experience outside of Japan and might not even speak English - not sure how that'd be emulating Celtic.

There is surely no chance Slot leaves Feyenoord for a Championship club, plus he's under contract at Feyenoord and that would almost automatically rule us out of considering him.

Knutsen could be worth a punt, though I'd hope he won't feel obliged to play Zinckernagel even when he's out of sorts.

Surely there is more of a chance of Slot coming from Feyernoord than Postecoglou coming from Celtic but I do recognise it would be a tough sell.

Who knows if he speaks English, yes. But he has achieved enormous success in a largely disregarded league - that’s the analogy to Ange. I definitely would be concerned hiring a manager with a good record from just one club but I’d like us to take a look at him to see if he has that special something.

I have a very weird feeling we’ll go for Carlos Carvahal for some reason. Just seems like something theyd’d go for. Wouldn’t be my choice but we could do worse; he did ok in England and has done really good jobs in Portugal.
