Well goodbye Top Gear.....

Thanks for the memories, but I do feel it was on the decline anyway.

Been quite sh*t for a few series now.

The Peugeot episode couple weeks back was the funniest it's been in a while.

Surely it'll just move to c5 or c4?

    First Holloway and now Clarkson?

All we need now is a Jonathan Ross bankrupcy story and it'll be the best day ever.

Believe it or not & like it or not, it's currently the most watched TV show on the entire planet. You think the Beeb are going to kill it off just like that? I don't think so.

There will be meetings & more meetings, an apology & then it'll be back on again in a couple of weeks

Mid life crisis I reckon. Left his wife recently, can't stop making dodgy comments, bizarrely yellowing teeth and expanding paunch and now he punches a producer.

I know a little of the innards of the show and the producers have always been very supportive of the man. He may be running out of rope, but it may be he is fed up and deep down part of him wants out.

Oh I believe it, and I'm not unhappy about it. I'm a fan, but just feel it's declined recently and isn't anywhere near as good as it used to be.

Fifth gear which has moved to the History Channel of something is still an excellent program about cars. Top gear is a comedy program with some cars thrown in.

Clarkson is denying it all and as a 30% owner of the program I think we haven't heard the last of them. No way they'll just cut the series short. It's shown in 250 odd countries. Not sure the BBC can go back on these contracts just like that.

  13. wfcmoog

Wow! So it's shown in every single country on earth, plus about 60 which presumably are on other planets.

Seems to be quite a lot of support for him despite the allegations - is that simply because Clarkson and Top Gear are so popular?

I quite like Top gear for what it is, basically a silly entertainment show hosted by 3 middle aged men having a laugh. Aside from the banter and daft challenges the make up of the show is pretty good, they will always review a car that is far beyond the price range of the vast majority of the population but it is interesting; not as often these days but they would also sensibly review a car that is within the majority's price range and would be good; as for the "Star in a reasonably priced car", what set it apart is when the star was interviewed it wasn't just your general chat host type questions, it focussed on the interviewee's car history. This week was supposed to be Gary Lineker BTW

Likewise, I quite like Clarkson mainly because he speaks his mind and his books are an entertaining read but I imagine that in person he's a bit of an a-hole.

Where people who were indifferent about Clarkson as a person and Top Gear as a show, it was completely different from the usual left-wing agenda that proliferates throughout the BBC on the whole and I imagine that there are some management within the corporation who hate Clarkson and Top Gear because it isn't socialist enough but had to bear it because the show (mainly through the man himself) is BBC Worldwide's biggest export.

It's funny that you choose not to see the existence of Top Gear on the BBC as evidence of it's diversity. Instead you imagine that the BBC's upper management in some way harbour a political grudge against it.

If you care to take a look at the output of the BBC on any given day there is little that you would gleam to justify any notion of mad bias to the left. Clarkson is one of many middle of the road or right wing contributors. The left wing voices however are the ones that stick out, because there is little balance elsewhere.

The BBC has fully supported Clarkson and uses shows like 'QI' or his recent documentaries to give him a wider platform. There is no agenda against him and he has extraordinary latitude because it has worked. A fully commercial company would have flogged it to death and replaced him with someone easier on the eye and less abrasive.

However he makes it very difficult and no one can punch someone at work and expect no consequences. I mean sign a petition to reinstate someone accused of punching someone. Get real FFS. Only anti BBC fantasies can support such idiocy.

Fact is if Clarkson had been on Sky he wouldn't have lasted. Look at Andy Gray.

So the BBC cancels the last three shows of the series. No doubt loses out on exposure, contracts and has to pay for replacement programming. Not to mention the salaries of everyone who contributed.

Cutting off nose to spite face springs to mind.

The BBC are cle was full of high rated comments claiming the BBC are too left wing for him and it's "PC".

If I punched someone at work when I was on a warning I'm pretty sure I would be suspended.

The idiots signing a petition without knowing what happened just further prove petitions shouldn't be taken seriously.

I don't think they care what he did though, they just want to see the new episodes.

I was going to post a new thread on something my wife said about this, but perhaps it would be a bit of a double to this thread. I would love to garner opinion on a particular BBC / Jimmy Saville / Jeremy Clarkson question.

My wife asked me what have the BBC learned from the Jimmy Saville scandal if they 'bend the rules' for someone who is 'super-popular'? I don't have an axe to grind on this, I don't watch the programme, but I think it is a very apposite question. I'd love to know what you all think about this point.

The BBC have acted as if he's guilty without any investgation - ok he was under a final warning.
The majority of the show if not all of it is in the can. It's already done. Gary Linekar has done his lap. It's not like Clarkson has to do anything more so why cancel it?

I think the BBC are between a rock and a hard place on this one. They should just issue a statement saying it will be investigated and nothing changes until further notice. But Clarkson does need to be suspended form work until the investigation is completed because it's a personal issue rather than a procedural one. If there's studio work to be done to get the remaining programs finished there's two other presenters that can cary his parts until the end of the series.

Also who could replace Clarkson for the next series?

They could do guest presenters like Have I got news for you after Angus Deyton messed up.

Alternatively I'd reccomend Frankie Boyle. He's free the moment.

Top Gear is usually filmed in front of the audience on the afternoon of the Wednesday before the show is broadcast. So that would have been today. I know from someone who used to work behind the scenes on the show that the "star in the reasonably priced car" is done in the morning of the recording day and then are interviewed in the studio in the afternoon so that only one day is taken for their services. I suspect the reason for axing this weeks show is because most of it hasn't yet been recorded.

Tru dat. And it would be awkward without him. And it would be awkward not to suspend him. Hard for any team to work together after someone's been punched because the star's dinner didn't turn up.

Yep they are idiots. The anti-PC brigade are the whingeing cry-babies of the world.

Normally warnings expire though so if he's past the time limit it will be immaterial to the outcome. It really comes down to can they all carry on working together?

I predict therapy and a profitable serialisation of how he becomes a changed man.

A couple of years ago I was given the task of getting a new vehicle for a sporting syndicate I'm a member of. It had to be a 4WD and a Mitsubishi dealer offered special "Browning" versions of a couple of models (L200 and Shogun) which were ideal (and the dealer in question really wanted to make/close the deal). To compare the models I showed our group quite a few youtubes and this is one of them:

It's amazing how much like an ex-public schoolboy Jeremy "I'm not an ex-public schoolboy - I'm a man of the people" Clarkson used to sound.

I've had a "week off" (due to a full sinus exploration) and spent a lot of time on-line watching stuff. I really liked this:

And it's such a shame as in the British version of this I could only envisage Clarkson as one opponent and the other David Mitchell or Charlie Brooker.

I'm convinced that one of the things Clarkson did when the original TG finished in 2002 was read "The Complete Works of PJ O'Rourke" and thought "Hang on..."

Clarkson was bought out in 2012, he no longer has any claim to the programme's rights.

The real important thing is to make sure the hyper car battle happens. Top gear can go out with a bang and I'll be happy as long as we see that.

Sky News quoting family present at the Hotel reporting long expletive filled rant with threats at the producer that he will get him sacked.

I've stayed in lots of hotels for work and I would have to say one of the advantages of them is that you can get food pretty much whenever you want. I would say if you were working on Top Gear pretty much anytime you want. Why didn't the fat **** just ask the hotel to make him dinner. Even if it's late they would have done it. Bizarre.

There are many variables that we don't know - maybe he just had an row with his ex-wife and was angry? This maybe just put him over the edge?

If he goes it will be a victory for that Danny Cohen fellow, the Director of BBC TV. He has been wanting Clarkson out for a while and tried to get him out for something he said a while ago, but was overruled. He much prefers those that follow the party line, don't rock the boat, never speak their mind, never say anything non PC, etc.

Like Alan Titchmarsh, he would fit in nicely as a replacement.
