I was thinking this the other day, although I would put him at ‘icon’ status. If he leaves in a classy way to a CL team he will be right up there. I think he would be much more appreciated if he spoke English so we had more of a connection to him, instead of being a wordless expensive commodity.
Sarr is a model professional. Never kicked up a fuss. Just got on with it. I really do think all he want's to do is play football and score goals or create them. He's quite happy where he is for the moment.
Yep. He’s a very professional person in a world full of petulant agents and players. I wish him the absolute best when he inevitably makes the step up.
He would also be appreciated more if he were anywhere near as good as the money we paid for him and are apparently trying to recoup would suggest. We massively overpaid for 15m worth of pacy winger.
Yes, it is alarming how easily teams can snuff out his threat. And it's not just premier league teams, chumpionshit teams had his number more often than not.
If they offer >£60m and we have 20+ points. It would be very tempting given Afcon and our apparant strength up front. But if we're struggling for points we'd be shooting ourselves in the foot really. He's an obvious player for NUFC to target.
It’s going to be fun watching them trying to buy players, quite rightly every club should be whacking a huge premium on anyone they’re interested in. If everyone sticks to the same principle they’ll either have to pay massively other the odds and every club benefits and has the potential to strengthen more sensibly anyway, or they won’t pay the fees and potentially get relegated.
He quite obviously has been a top player for us but strangely for some reason I wouldnt be unhappy to see him leave. I have just never connected with him.
Yeah I'm exactly the same, fantastic player and I believe he will be brilliant surrounded by better players but I won't be devastated when he leaves. On the other hand I connected with Dennis immediately, mainly because he's a **** to the opposition.
Exactly who we want to try and sign Sarr. Liverpool won’t pay over the odds but Newcastle we should take the pi55 out of get some ridiculous fee. I wonder if Sarr would go there?
At some stage he will leave so there is no point in getting upset about it. I would prefer it if we got the full season out of him but I wouldn't blame the owners if they accept £60m+ in January. Will players want to go to Newcastle though? Obviously the pay will be good but I don't think anyone believes they will be competing for anything for a few years. In January they could well still be occupying one of the relegation spots!
I still don't see it happening in January. Which, as anyone who follows my predictive abilities knows, means it's a sure fire thing.
I think it's down to personalities, Sarr by all accounts is quiet and reserved, Dennis with him reportedly throwing a strop for not getting his favourite seat on the coach at a previous club sounds like a madman, his 5 bookings so far confirms that, other teams won't like him because he's a madman, but he's our madman and we like that. For Sarr, I think the biggest frustration is that he doesn't like taking on players and he doesn't track back enough. He will do well enough in his career but he's not as good as he's made out to be, undeniably he has some quality but his main attribute is his pace (as Villa found out), once that drops off when he hits 30 he will be a very ordinary player.
Sarr will leave. The timing of his departure depends on offers and our financial situation. In the interim, let's hope he gives it his all for us and helps the club survive this season. I am pleased that we have another bidder, albeit not happy that the Suadis are using sport in an attempt to clean up their image. How we spend the money will be the key. If it is primarily used to pay down debt, it provides some financial stability, but severely weakens our prospects of staying in the top division. This is the model that we (Pozzos) use and, in general, it has worked. Richarlison, Doucoure, Igalo, Lukebecio, Pervis etc. The slight difference with Sarr is that we paid an extraordinary amount for him in the first place, but we will make a healthy profit. Pedro will be the next in line to (hopefully) shine. This will again attract the sharks and we make another profit on a sale. To balance that, we have signed many duds, with the result that profits made on sales are wiped out by the likes of Gray and Success. This is all part of the drama that exists when you are a hornets fan. As I have said before, it's not boring.
If we can get silly money like £60m+ and spend the money on strengening the team, then for me it would be goodbye Sarr. However if we can't get enough money by selling him to strengthen the team enough to help us maintain our place in the PL, then I think we should keep Sarr to hopefully do that job instead.
If his agent has influence over him and his agent is motivated by money, Sarr will end up at Newcastle. I think the new owners in Newcastle will be making some high profile "look at us" signings initially (not unlike Man City when their new owners took over) that will not necessarily work, but it throws down a marker to their rivals. As for Sarr, he is a great footballer, but he has limitations. Suggestion of figures like £60m is hard to justify, and, in my opinion, way over the odds.
Still think it's highly unlikely we sell in January, even if the fee is inflated. The financial rewards for staying up are obvious and strengthening one of the other clubs at the bottom isn't a smart move - and any money we get won't be fully pumped back into the squad. We know that. Coupled with the fact it's difficult to get quality AND value in January. The money from Newcastle would also still likely be there in the summer.... I also don't think Sarr would be keen. I suspect he wants his next move to be to a club at least immediately challenging for CL places...that isn't Newcastle and won't be for 2-4 years yet IMO. Only way I see it happening is if we desperately need the money and fully expect to go down. Which I don't think is true. Lastly - I don't believe Newcastle are targeting any players yet until they appoint their manager who will say who he wants/what they need etc.
The thing with Sarr isn't necessarily his floor, in terms of where he is at now but his ceiling and his potential. He might be frustrating to watch with his inconsistency and he hasn't pushed on as we'd have hoped but I still think his ceiling is higher than any other player in the Pozzo era. (I know this has been argued against at length.) Yes his strengths are predominantly in his athleticism as against his football intelligence but I still feel the world is at his feet. If he can play in a better team, with better coaches I think he'd push on. That said, I'd bite anyones arm off for 60m in January and i'd consider selling for 45m then even if we got to re-invest it in the squad. 60m from Newcastle in January might be the only opportunity for a fee like this to ever make sense.
Far too much of a gamble in January. As @Burnsy said their money will still be there come the Summer. Plus I also believe Sarr would want an immediate CL club and I have no doubt he will get that in the Summer window.
Put a juicy price tag on and let Newcastle throw their weight at it. Sarr is one of those players that on his day is great but I also think he is a player that makes the team a lot worse on his off days. Some players just have that effect and I wouldn't miss him.
So you'd get rid of a player who can single handedly win a game on his own? Who on Earth would we be able to replace him with in January? He will leave but I can't see it happening until the Summer at the earliest.
He's destined for much bigger things than Newcastle. But if it really is £100m - you take it. He's probably not going to ever exceed that value, and looking at some £100m+ players: Coutinho - absolute flop Dembele - injuries wrecked him Griezmann - already back at Atletico Hazard - injuries wrecked him Bale - initially successful but now a golfer Pogba - flatters to deceive You just take the money and run at that price. I'd be gutted though as he's the player that you get excited about on the way to the match. A massive talent.
Lots of ifs and buts. He will have 2 years left on his contract in the summer, so whatever happens we’ll almost certainly be selling him next summer. I can’t see Gino wanting something that cost him £40m going down the Hughes and Chalobah route. So in terms of ifs and buts, if Newcastle offer something like £60m in Jan, and we look relatively safe we’d be mad not to take it. He’s a good player about once a month, the rest of the time he makes us one dimensional and we’re relying on him producing some magic that he just won’t produce every game. The opposition are all clued up on him, so if he’s having an off game then so are we. £60m for such an inconsistent player would be crazy to turn down in the circumstances. But I think it’s highly unlikely Newcastle offer that much and it’s highly unlikely we'll be relatively safe in Jan, therefore it wouldn’t be worth selling him. The flip side is if we get relegated anyway then we will be selling him, but for a cut price, we’d be lucky to get £25m given the circumstances. So it’s one of those where hindsight might prove the decision not to sell earlier anyway wrong, like with Iggy and Doucoure.
He can single handedly win a game on his own roughly about every 5th game he plays, that is the problem. It’s all very well saying he can win a game on his own, but how often does he? And how does that help us in the games when we’re hanging around for him to win it for us, and he inevitably doesn’t, because he’s having an off game.
Would be amazed if he ever moves for anything near £100m. I think he's the same bracket of player as Richarlison and that means you're hoping for a moneybags club looking to break into the top six to get a good price.
