I think I read somewhere that because Ashley spent very little, Newcastle have an immediate £200m transfer budget before FFP even becomes a consideration. I can’t see us selling late in the window, but if it’s £70m early in the window and we have a reasonable chance of bringing in replacements, then surely he’s a gonna. Transfer fees in the Jan window are always inflated and NUFC will be desperate, unless their league position changes.

Set a list of targets now (mainly defenders - Julian Chabot - and midfielders - Thorsby).

Set a price of £100m...accept the counter offer of £80m early in the window.

    Get your targets in early.

He will be needed this season to help keep us up. As for 'off days', all of our players have them.

Agree we need to set our targets early, as the knock on effect of Newcastle paying over the odds is that clubs know we’ve got a load of cash burning a hole in our pocket as well.

If we somehow have 25 or more points towards the end of January and we can get Newcastle to pay £60m+, with the majority up front, then personally I'd be happy to let him go IF we then reinvested £30m or so of it on a quality left back, a centre back and possibly a centre mid.

He's too inconsistent and doesn't affect games enough to reject an offer of that size if we look like being safe and we can reinvest some of it to help ensure that. I'd be happy enough to see us end the season with King, Cucho, Dennis and Pedro - with Baah potentially given some sort of chance and Fletcher as final back up - as our options across a front three, again IF we look to be closing in on safety.

If we're lingering in or around the bottom three in January then don't take the risk and keep him until the summer, when he will inevitably leave anyway.

Nobody is potentially going to offer £60m for any of our other players though, and none of them cost £40m in the first place.

There is a difference between a player who was free having an off day, and a player who was by far and away our most expensive signing in history having multiple off days before he pops up and has a good game.

But where did this £60m being offered in January come from? I just don't see it myself. If Newcastle want him that badly they will try in the summer, and then other clubs might be interested and then we can sell to the highest bidder if need be.

The £60m is of course theoretical and probably unlikely. The point was, you can’t equate players having off days to Sarr in the way you did, when the majority cost a fraction he did, or in many cases were free.

If I sold my old, unreliable, clapped out old banger of a car and bought a brand new one at significantly higher cost, I’d have a right to expect the new one was more reliable and performed better than my cheap banger did.

All players have off days, but if someone offered us *£60m for one that has them as often as Sarr then it would make sense to entertain it for the very reason that he has so many.

    *Theoretical and unlikely.

    That's if they stay up.

Expect a spending spree in January and as we know January is the month of overpaying...they'll be paying well over the odds for players.

The £60m is just a benchmark that most of us would entertain selling, personally squeeze the oppressors for minimum £70m.

It's naive to assume that. Newcastle will be affected by PL spending limits in a way Chelsea and City were not when their billionaires took over. The reason NUFC are allowed to spend so much in the next window is cos Ashley was so tight. If they go large in January they may well have less to spend in the summer. January could be when they have the most to spend and are at their most desperate. The idea that Newcastle will shove £60m down the back of a sofa to buy Sarr in the summer is questionable. NUFC will spend an 8 figure sum on a 1st choice right sided attacker in January. The only question is will it be Sarr or someone else?

I'm surprised by the suggestions we paid £40m for Sarr. However, I think his market value now is £60m and Newcastle are probably the club most likely to pay it. Liverpool might go for it if Salah doesnt sign but the Salah situation is looking like theatrics to make it appear Fenway arent being dictated to by a player.

The thing with Sarr is he would most likely be absolutely devastating in a team on his level. He has the same problem at Watford Ricky had in that teams focus on fouling him and marking him out of games. Imagine a front 3 of Mane Jota Sarr. He'd have way more space to operate in. If I was him I'd join a team who's left winger is better than him so he gets less attention. If NUFC have an injury free front 3 of ASM Wilson and Sarr after Afcon plus 4 other new 1st teamers, they are staying up no question. Sarr, Tarkowski and a decent manager is probably all they need to stay up.

His market value isn’t £60m, Sancho was only £72m, Halland will he available for about that in the summer. If someone wants to pay it then fantastic, but nothing he’s done in his career so far makes him worth £60m.

Haaland's market value is £150m, he's available for less due to a clause in his contract. If Sancho is £72m and Grealish is £100m I'd say £60m for Sarr is pretty good value.

  17. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

The flipside to your argument is that Grealish’s release clause was set at £100m, so it’s swings and roundabouts between him and Haaland. Sancho is an England international with stellar stats for a top team in a top league, Sarr isn’t any of those. I know he’s our player but it’s not uncommon for us to overvalue our own players. There were genuinely people on this forum not so long ago saying Chalobah could be worth £50m. Sarr is not worth £60m, not even close at the moment. Buendia was only £35m and he had better stats than Sarr and as much PL experience at the point he was sold.

Why would Sarr go to Newcastle in January? He is young and seems very well settled. If he is to uproot himself for a big move why Newcastle, when he can continue being the big fish in our small pond until the end of the season. He may have several offers, one of which maybe Newcastle. No top players are going there unless they have a top manager and premier league status.

Wasn't it Deeney who said Chalobah could end up being worth £50m? Haha. £100m for Sarr is being thrown around in the media today. Buendia has scored 2 goals in 45 PL games, Grealish has scored 16 goals in 104 PL games. Sancho has 0 in 7 and Sarr has 9 in 37. Sarr is a super fast, strong, goalscoring winger. This season Sarr has more PL goals than Grealish, Buendia and Sancho combined. He's the man.

Just to clarify.....my 'i don't see it myself' comment was more to do with him moving in January than the fee. I wouldn't really like to hazard a guess to how much he would be sold for.

Newcastle will spend huge sums in January. They have to to make sure they don’t get relegated. Unlikely that spend will include an offer for Sarr though given they have ASM.

  24. Newcastle might find things a lot more difficult than they would like.

Aside from clubs rarely letting go key players in Jan, they simply won't buy a CL team at the first time of asking, there will have to be several cycles of buying the next level of player.

Any player or manager or coach they could bring in Jan will know they will probably be dumped within 2 years for a better model. Some might go for the money, but who would go to enhance their career?

  25. a19tgg

Lots of talk of players like Coutinho, they won’t get players at the top of their game that want CL football, but plenty of talented players about that will go for money that other clubs will be happy to get rid of. A bit like a version of how Gino approaches transfers, but with actual money.

I don’t think they’d have any intention of building a CL squad immediately, that will probably take a good four seasons or so, I think they’d be well aware of that.

  26. They have shown they are not patient by not waiting until next summer to bin off Brucie

For reference, it took Man City four years after the Abu Dhabi takeover to win the PL. Of course that win was extremely close and was at least in part due to Man U throwing it away.

I don’t think you can uses that as any sort of guide, he was universally despised by the fans and getting rid of him was an absolute no brainer irrespective of their ambitions. There is also the small matter of having not won a game all season and being in the relegation zone. His job would’ve been at risk at any club regardless. Newcastle we’re an anomaly to that because Ashley wasn’t about to spend £9m of his money paying him off with a takeover looming.

If they are sensible the Newcastle owners should be looking to get an experienced PL manager in (BFS?) and get the signings they need in January to stay up.

Nothing exciting or dramatic, leave that for the summer.

I doubt Sarr is the answer to their current problems.

But will the owners and fans be patient? I doubt it.

Hopefully they'll spend a fortune on a few "big" players in January that just upset whatever team balance they have now (as per Ronaldo at Utd) and they go down.

  31. a19tgg

    a19tgg First Team

Exactly, they can’t possibly achieve anything this season aside from survival, so there is absolutely no point spending over the odds in January, players are way over priced and the players that are available are generally the ones clubs want to move on.

Do what they need to do to stay up and start afresh in the summer. Anything they spend over the top in January will just be eating into the slack they’ve built up within FFP and be a total waste. The less they spend in Jan the more they can spend in the summer when it can actually make a difference for them in the following season.

Hence why I can’t see them buying Sarr and certainly not spending £60m. At a push I can see them offering £40m and Gino accepting £50m, but even that is unlikely.

  32. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Money is nothing to them and FFP won't affect them for a few years. They need to spend to ensure they stay up. I wouldn't be surprised to see them spend £75m-£100m in Jan assuming the players they want to sign will take the gamble and join.

I change my mind. Get a deal for him done in January. Rinse Newcastle for some extortionate fee that will be far more than he's worth.

Electric on his day, but his day doesn't come anywhere near enough and it's not improving. Bored of his terrible crossing, bored of his negativity in taking on his man and bored or his lack of desire and flapping his arms around sulking.

I'd take Deulofeu back over him all day.
