Again, supporting the rights of trans people and condemning them being abused (375 were murdered in 2021), is not the same as endorsing a teacher encouraging a 4 year old to have gender reassignment surgery.

Or alternatively, it’s okay for James McClean not to wear a poppy, so does that mean it’s okay for players not to wear a logo for LGBTQ?

Considering your comment on the Jake Daniels thread was about what a lucrative decision he was making, I'm going to go ahead and assume you don't consider the LGBT community a marginalised one.

But the two go hand in hand, you think all this support and awareness just goes into thin air? No, it goes into the curriculum, TV media, society etc. It influences kids and for me personally, I find it dangerous. You’re even seeing examples of people changing back to their original gender. It creates a world where Lewis Hamilton can’t say to his own nephew “boys don’t wear dresses”. It’s bizarre to me. If you don’t support that you’re well within your rights to me.

It is marginalised for sure, has been for centuries. Doesn’t mean Jake Daniels, bravery aside, wouldn’t have considered the commercial and PR benefits. The two aren’t mutually exclusive, what a weird conclusion for you to come to.

You’d be naive to think his agent isn’t out there rubbing his hands.

Unfortunately I'm getting the impression that you don't care/know about the importance of showing support for the LGBT+ community, and you're conflating a very small number of issues with the suffering of an entire group of people who, for the most part just want to live their lives in a way that makes them feel comfortable within themselves.

It goes into society that being Gay/Trans/Bi/etc is okay, and accepted? That's a good thing!! I've worked with kids in the last 10 years, struggling so much with their identity, and the lack of acceptance from parents and peers that they've repeatedly attempted suicide. I can't overstate how vital it is that the message is spread that it's okay to be who you are when it comes to your sexuality and your identity.

You come across as a really nice lad Squibs but I do think you need to do a bit of actual research on this. And I don't mean the sensationalist headlines, I mean the actual statistics, and experiences of real people who are suffering daily because of a lack of societal acceptance.

That's your opinion mate and I respect it. My opinion is still the same. I don't think opinions of the West should arrogantly be forced upon people from different countries and cultures. He's a practising Muslim from a country where most believe homosexuality is wrong, he has to return home one day, he has family probably still living there. As long as he's not abusing or harming anyone then what exactly is the big deal. The punishment for homosexual acts in Senegal is a prison sentence of up to five years. It's arrogant of us to think he should just believe what most in the West believe and if he doesn't he's a big, bad man. It's not right.

Okay mate. We'll circle back to this when he's in a Nike ad despite being a League 2 footballer. Like I said, that doesn't take away from the magnitude of the news nor the bravery of the player but someone in his team would've thought about the branding and revenue opportunities when deciding to come out, and rightly so if you're a smart person. If that's a strange conclusion to you, so be it.

Do you agree with homosexuality being illegal in 2022? And if you disagree with it and think it should change, how do you think that change can come about?

Being gay only became legal in the UK in 1967, and a large part of that happening was because public opinion shifted. Do you think members of the Senegalese national team openly supporting gay rights could help to shift (even slightly) public opinion in Senegal, which could one day lead to decriminalisation? Which would be a good thing, no?

I rather suspect it's more to do with having a dig at Daniels. That it will earn him media time, interviews, endorsements when the reality is he's just trying to become a role model to the undoubted homosexuals who play football at a high level but still feel uncertain about the reaction they will receive. Not only from bigoted fans but also some bigoted team mates.

When the poster states this is what they believe. They also have been inculculated with this belief. It's not based on rationality. Just an illogical belief based on a set of fairy tales which regards homosexuality as an abomination. They shall burn in the fiery pits of hell. I mean this is the twenty first century but for many parts of the world, indeed where nutty religionists exist this is still prevalent. The facts are homosexuality is a biological phenomenon caused by developmental changes in the brain possibly caused by subtle changes in circulating hormone levels in the fetus/neonate acting on specific areas of the brain that affect sexual preference. The phenomenon also occurs throughout the natural world.

I find Sarr's attitude ironic considering that he has been taking the knee all season against one form of discrimination only to reject an action which intends to support a community that is still discriminated against in many parts of the world. I find Gueye's actions and those of Sarr reprehensible.

You honestly think that he has a team behind him ? A media marketing firm that went to him and said listen Jake this is the way to maximize your earnings ? Come on. The guy just wanted to feel comfortable within himself, his family, club and team mates. Nothing more. Other openly gay athletes haven't exactly had a flood of endorsements coming through to them. Take Jason Collins in the NBA.

It takes real courage in what is a macho sport like ice hockey, rugby for instance to come out. And like it or not the 'pioneers' are going to get some publicity that hopefully encourages others to come out as well. That means people like Gareth Thomas and Luke Prokop.

Okay fine. I admit I've found myself extremely attracted to Philip Zinckernagel this season. I didn't want to admit my feelings publicly (I have a Senegalese aunt) so have been deflecting by calling him average and referencing his lack of Key Passes per 90 minutes.

I frankly don't care how Senegal handle their business, nor should we. In a country where people are dying from starvation, are homeless and politicians are taking the p*ss out of all, I just find in completely laughable that we think it's okay to tell other countries how to behave.

Frankly, an absolutely bizarre attitude to have. By the same logic we shouldn't comment/care about the Rwandan genocide, pollution levels in China, North Korea's nuclear program, poverty in Africa, the war in Ukraine. It's all far far away lands with foreign people making their own decisions, after all.

Or, do we have a moral obligation to fight for equality and safety for every human on our planet, whether they're in St Albans or Senegal?

I just can't understand the mindset of being able to watch videos and hear accounts (one of many examples linked below) of gay men being attacked by mobs of people, and your response essentially being "unlucky mate, sorry you happened to be born in Senegal"

A genocide the American’s were well aware of but for once didn’t want to intervene, pollution in China? They have concentration camps literally killing Muslims on a Holocaust level, a war in Ukraine we care about but it was okay for us to invade Iraq, Afghanistan rape their women and kill their children. Hmm okay. Ever see a mention of the atrocities in Palestine? Nah doesn’t suit the political agenda.

But yeah, a Senegalese footballer not wearing a pride shirt is what’s important. The stances are hypocritical and I just find it all rather hilarious, let’s pick on a kid who’s posted support of a team mate & friend. Let’s force Roman Abrahamovic to sell but let the Saudi’s with the worst gay rights in the world in to our league at the same time? Meanwhile the UK still imports oil from Russia. Makes sense.

I think thats a big reach - based on the fact the club spoke to him and he immediately took his 'supportive' post. If he thought it that ridiculous and was acting out of principle, he would have told the club to do one. But clearly he didn't. Not sure how he's showing that much support if he can be silenced that easy?

I'm not one of these 'get out of my club' merchants - but Sarr's action here was naive at best, pure stupid at worst.

As I say, he could have just sent his mate a private text of support. Doing it on social media was sure to attract attention and I can't be convinced really that he didn't know that.

  29. wfcSinatra

    wfcSinatra Predictor Choker 14/15

I’m sure he did know that but telling the club to do one is unlikely right? His agent probably said it’s destroying his transfer value too so it’d be wiser to take it down. We’ve seen players think for themselves plenty of times online then it goes a bit wrong, brands & agents get involved and there’s a takedown or retracted post.

Question, when Kucka refused to take the knee all season and his literal reason was “all lives matter” why did nobody on here bat an eyelid?

Maybe the Americans were following your advice of "not my country, not my problem"?

You realise it's possible for the all the things you mentioned to be bad (they are), while also acknowledging that gay people being brutally attacked is also bad, right? It's not an either/or situation.

When Craig Cathcart comes out in support of the atrocities in Palestine I'll be condemning his stupidity, just like people are condemning Gueye/Kouyate/Sarr's.

With all due respect Burnsy, you don’t understand Islam then, that’s not how it works. You’re not meant to hate someone because they’re sinning, it’s between them and God. Being gay isn’t even an unforgivable sin.

However as a Muslim, it is on them to not actively promote a sin. Just like wearing the Stake shirt, Sarr shouldn’t be doing that either. Why he chooses to unlike say a Fredric Kanoute, is a different matter.

This is what's know as 'whataboutism'.

I don't fully get why you keep reframing it in that mildly insidious way - firstly, Sarr is not a 'kid', he's a 24-year-old fully-grown adult. Secondly, the issue is not 'posting support of a team mate and friend'. Again, you cannot just divorce the context and meaning behind what that support is, as well as his choice to publicly offer it. Gueye has not been dropped by his club, or left by his girlfriend - it's not something that is happening to him, it is something that he is choosing to do, and the mere act of 'supporting a friend' does not inherently/automatically mean it's a noble, correct, or honourable thing to do.
