Zahawi's tax issue were a highpoint of this weekend's Sunday Times - I'm not a subscriber (paywalled) so I can't comment. But there's a lengthy thread on the matter: https://twitter.com/DanNeidle/status/1547167726963236864 And as a web-page. I mean, Zahawi's already explained the 'accounting mistake' that led him to claim three grand on parliamentary expenses for heating his stables, so he deserves the time and right to fully explain all of this as the author points out - but before anyone says that tax avoidance is just legal minimaization isn't this "aggressive tax avoidance" which is, ahem, frowned upon?
I know Sunak was desperate but wow he came across poorly. His best bet would have been to let Truss talk as much as possible but he spent the majority of the time talking over her or cutting her off. Schoolboy error. Maybe have gone down well with the membership though.
They are both dreadful, compromised by their time in Government. A sample of the ridiculous level, Truss, under-pressure for the silly things she has said about her own and Sunak’s education says I would like everyone to go a school like Rishi’s (Winchester). I mean who does she think she is? Che Guevara? Not that he would have said anything so utterly ridiculous. And none of the hosts took her up. No one said, actually that’s ridiculous Liz. Our kids can’t all go to Winchester. That’s the whole ******* point of Winchester and you know it.
The only thing worse than the candidates was the poor production and lack of moderation. The BBC needs to pull it's socks up or forfeit the licence fee.
Yep. Ever since he resigned he’s been in campaigning mode. Is he that deluded and self-interested? Er, very probably.
I posted on here before that I thought the Tory's best bet was to offload Johnson and unite behind a new leader and a "new" government. They could then do there usual schtick of blaming the last administration for all the issues (see Theresa May) and promise the world to win the next GE. I was wrong. I never imagined the "Boris" cult was so strong. That, coupled with the appallingly poor quality of the leadership candidates, has left the Tories in a real quandary. Elect either candidate and they lose as much as half of the Johnson supporting membership. I can't see them getting away with blaming him for the nation's current problems either. Keep Johnson when a huge percentage of the parliamentary party is against him, including many of his front bench, would be difficult to say the least. Labour and the other opposition parties must be over the moon with the current infighting and chaos Johnson is causing for the Tories!
I'm glad they discussed Truss' earrings and Sunak's dress sense last night, I was very concerned before the debate.
The Tories are masters of their own undoing. Getting Johnson out was right. Removing all the semi decent replacements and leaving us with the Cheese Gurner and Roland Rat was a huge mistake. I know a couple of Tory party members and they're peed off at the selection available. It's time they changed the selection rules and put all candidates to their membership. I think that's what Labour do?
The thing is Truss wants to cut taxes now, regardless of the debt we have. Sunak wants to put up corporation tax, which stifles much needed growth. both won't help inflation. Neither policy is the right way to handle the economy at the moment. Income tax thresholds should be increased in line with 10% inflation at the base rate and VAT on fuel should be temporarilly reduced. Those are the only cuts we should do at the moment and will help those struggling. A promise to review with the aim of further reductions in 12, 18 & 24 months depending on economy should be offered. Corporation tax should remain consistent if anything lowered shoudl funds allow. We need to compete with other countries to get business to come here. Putting up red tape and costs doesn't help, increases in tax will be the final nail in the coffin.
Liz Truss answering a question for only a few seconds caused a Talk TV (no, me either) presenter to collapse: https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/live/uk-politics-62273292 The presenter is OK apparently. A reassuring statement was issued by her employer: Phew, the candidates are fine.
Typical BBC cockk-up, with snowflake presenter fainting and a total waste of licence fee payers money. Rage, rage, fume, fume. Errrrrr, oh, seems to be some mistake.
Why don't they just continue the debate until one of the candidates eventually spontaneously combusts. They can then declare them Prime Minister, say they have perished in office, and start the whole process again, and again, until they end up with Blonde Trump.
You don’t understand, that’s because Brexit hasn’t been done properly, not because it was wrong in principle.
