Her 'colleague' Jake Berry is not letting the matter drop: Ex-Tory chairman alleges Braverman responsible for ‘multiple breaches of ministerial code’
Something doesn't smell right to me about Braverman's reappointment. Don't get me wrong, if it was a move on purpose and was the catalyst for ousting Truss then it's no bad thing but to reappoint so quickly? Tarnishes Rishi a bit imho. whether he was involved or not. I wonder if the MPs wanted Rishi and they though Penny might get it when put to the membership, so organised her out of the running by lending votes to Liz. This then backfired when the membership went for Liz which obviously was never going to work. I know two Tory Party members that were less than pleased with the options they were left with. Wouldn't be suprised if the membership are cut out of future leadership choices.
It’s pretty clear really that the ERG mob still hold significant power. Reinstating Braverman signals to them that Sunak won’t oversteer and do anything daft like allow immigration to grow the economy or provide people to care for the elderly. While she won’t fix the small boats issue, she’ll signal to nationalists that the environment remains hostile. Brexit remains sacred, all must yield to it, including any semblance of Parliamentary Standards. These were trashed by the Prorogation, by Johnson continually through his time in office and now by this. It’s also very possible that Truss was ousted by Braverman and Sunak working together, but because she was such a disaster I doubt people will care about that.
Braverman's a Teflon-skinned ERG mouthpiece. https://twitter.com/jessphillips/status/1585373675871940609
I think the Tory strategy to keep the red wall onside will be to get some semblance of grip on the economy then try to move the conversation on to cultural and social issues and, of course, breath a bit of life in to 'levelling up'. Northerners are used to being skint so that doesn't bother them too much. They lap up anything about cracking down on immigration though
You've certainly nailed it there Moose. Betty, we've made it! Rishi says I'm in his 'cabinet of all the talents.' What job have I got you ask? Well Rishi did a little whoopsie there, I'm Minister without Portfolio. But that's just plain silly. I found this nice shiny red plastic portfolio today. He's not taking that off me, ever!
Given the way it came about, there's no way it was some 4D chess move by Braverman. She accidentally copied in another MP's wife, who told him, he reported it to the party who then referred it to Simon Case who spoke to Truss who sacked her. She then tried to deflect from the actual reason by using her resignation letter to try to bring down Truss. Angle for Labour here is surely that she was regularly doing this, sending sensitive papers via insecure email to a back bench mentor? Need to hammer this point home, sounds like she's lied about it being a one off mistake she made when tired.
I agree that she is way too stupid to concoct such a scenario, but once it was in play she still had the opportunity to stay in post. It’s not inconceivable she resigned with the certainty that she could strike a deal with Sunak. But like I say, no one is going to care, because no one thinks Truss should have stayed. It is fundamentally odd that Braverman was Truss’s choice for Home Secretary given that they had opposing views on the plan to boost immigration for growth. Either Truss, like Sunak, had to put this basket case in to appease the ERG or Truss simply assumed that everyone is like her and will abandon their beliefs in favour of the prevailing wind. I think Braverman would have been appalled by the plans to relax immigration and would have started talking to Truss’s rivals immediately. She resigned expecting Truss to follow and confident she still had backers.
Point I'm making is that it's pretty obvious she didn't resign (the convention is still to write a resignation letter even when effectively fired). Truss fired her and she then used her letter to try and bury Truss.
Yep, usually that’s the way it goes down. Not sure why they then needed a well-reported 90 minute row about it if she was simply there to get the old heave-ho from a, by then, very weak PM, but I don’t know enough for sure.
Meanwhile, no sooner had the applause died down for reinstalling the ban on fracking, Sunak has signalled he won’t be going to COP 27, Alok Sharma and Graham Stuart are out of cabinet and Therese Coffey is our sole voice in trying to stave off climate catastrophe.
“Choose your leaders with wisdom and forethought. To be led by a coward is to be controlled by all that the coward fears. To be led by a fool is to be led by the opportunists who control the fool. To be led by a thief is to offer up your most precious treasures to be stolen. To be led by a liar is to ask to be told lies. To be led by a tyrant is to sell yourself and those you love into slavery.”
Some people suggesting Johnson’s attempt to return over the weekend was a bit like this, with Gareth as Sunak.
No UK politics on the BBC news page for the first time in ages, almost like they want us to look away isnt it. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news
No10 choosing to use Gary Glitter's Rock and Roll part 2 as the music on the latest PM promotional video. As this tweet says, I'm expecting a statement from Glitter expressing his embarrassment and shame at being associated with this government: https://twitter.com/AllyFogg/status/1585941969389453312?t=t7QV-QbP9jsjCMLL5t2H3Q&s=19
No 10 claiming it was ‘stock music’, though it does have an uncanny likeness. It’s the same beat that was reimagined by the K*nts with their recent hit ‘Boris Johnson is still a ******** ****’. So maybe a message from Rishi’s team. Do I need to say ‘NSFW’?
