Brilliant keeper, alongside Foster and Coton one of the best I've seen at Watford Very happy with this
Fantastic news, obviously. Very important we have players that have experienced the Premier League, too. Almost surprised at the length of the contract, but a great show of commitment from the club. Hopefully Bond continues to improve and can step up after Gomes leaves - unless Watford have another 'keeper in mind.
He has been in the UK for a long time now. Can he claim UK citizenship and qualify as homegrown? Or is that not how it works?
lets hope news on Joka will follow in next few days...be good to focus on just the players, but really pleased we've got Gomes on board next season, he's been fantastic this year with us in the Championship and think he could be really special in the PL...
As I understand it home grown is not related to nationality or citizenship. It's to do with amount of training at a young age completed in this country.
Basically yes. A player has to have been trained in the UK for 3 years before he turns 21. So Fabregas qualifies as homegrown, but Flamini doesn't,
Not quite right, it only counts if those three years were in England or Wales, not Scotland and Northern Ireland.
How refreshing! I like him enormously. Not just because he is our best keeper, I think, since TC but also because he goes potty when we score and he cuddles our players. He also reminds me of The Emperor Ming from 'Flash Gordon'.:sign15:
I like him for many a reason: 1. He's simply a class keeper 2. He's won a **** load of points for us this season 3. His arms are huge 4. He's a born leader 5. He's not a disruption 6. He loves his fans and... 7. He's not afraid to challenge those who slate him (Brentford away). 8. When a vulnerable fan runs on the pitch he'll stop the stewards from getting heavy handed and merely entertain the fan and walk him back to his family. What a class act. Great touch. 9. He donates a part of his wages to children's wards. 10. When he donated to Great Ormand Street he met a young fan who thought of Gomes as his hero. Gomes came back the next day with Xmas presents for the children and a special gift for the fan - tickets to go see Spurs play vs. Everton. As Gomes was injured he sat with her at the ground and made her wear (throughout the entire match) a pair of signed gloves and a keepers jersey. I hear the occasional fan slate him. One fan even said at forest he's the worst keeper we've ever had. And there I was thinking that Gomes was mad....
I was wrong about this fella. Top class attitude. It's signings like this that will be key this summer. No doubt we will be looking at players who have Premier League experience, but it's the attitude that counts. You need to be determined to work hard and perform, and care about the club you're playing for. I was slated and told to "think before I write" after a post commenting on the likes of Caulker, Leroy Fer, Joey Barton, Tom Huddlestone, Jelavic, Seb Larsson, and saying that we need to avoid signing players like this just because they have Premier League experience. Fair enough, everyone's entitled to their opinion. I for one think that those players don't put enough of a shift in and are just living off false hype or past glories, and wouldn't do us any favours. But then again I was wrong about Gomes. I thought his career was on the slide and he was just looking for a final pay packet. My opinion has changed to the extent that I think he is as important to us as any other player in the squad, even irreplaceable. Class bloke who is not only determined to do his best for the club but who has top class ability. So you know what, the thing I will think about before slagging off a signing that the club makes is remember my initial reaction to Heurelho, and if we do sign any of those players that I've slated, I hope they prove me wrong and "do a Gomes". Well done fella :sign15:.
Fantastic 1st signing of the summer, it's almost like signing a new player; we can build a strong team on this solid base :sign15:
Are shots really that different in the PL, even if they're more frequent? How many of these do you see in the PL?
I don't know if Gomes is good or not yet because I didn't go to Man City away last year as Arsenal were on TV.
Boy did he have a dig at Spurs in the Daily Mail; I really hope he keeps a clean sheet against them next season, especially for his own satisfaction, not just teams.
He's gonna get some stick from Spuds fans at The Lane but should now get a warmer welcome at The Emirates.
True. He's never played at this level, so we've no way of knowing how he'll react. However, if his performances in the Brazilian second division are anything to go by, he'll **** all over the Premier League.
There was a period during his Spurs days when Gomes was considered by many to be the best keeper in the Prem, until his sending off in Milan and after that he lost form.
I've heard rumours of the Pozzos moving the club to Brazil to keep him happy. It has also been noted that no Brazilian club has every lost a competitive game to a European side when playing in Brazil, so the Pozzos have identified it as an easy route to the Premier League title. #loophole
