Apart from the issue of his awful style of play, poor use of subs and inflexible approach, there's also the issue of his nomadic managerial career.

Most of us are craving stability under the new era of Messiah Manga.

We want an end to the constant hiring and firing.

    So what do we do?

Appoint a guy who has only managed one full season at a club on two occasions since 2017.

His history suggests a coach who starts off well but then gets found out very quickly.

No doubt the same will happen here and we will continue to be the laughing stock of the footballing world yet again.

    Fair point .

Presumably he will have to be doing better than Edwards was to to stay in the job which seems unlikely.

The “standard” for how long a managers gets has been set .

I think we need to take a leaf out of Nottingham Forest's manager stability. Gino would of gotten shot of Cooper way before now, but he has a great chance of keeping them up this season against the odds. Sure, they are still in the mix but that win over Southampton would of been a massive lift in belief. If you stick with a guy and believe in his ambitions, and so do the players - keep him around. Don't sack him because he loses three games in a row. Teams go on bad runs look at Chelsea for example. I know we are nothing like Forest in terms of structure and playing staff, but the philosophy remains the same. Give a manager time and you will (mostly) reap the rewards. Gino's "hire'n'fire" strategy is not the way forward.

Forest have had about 20 managers in recent seasons too between their various owners tbf

This season has been rather unusual for them probably because they knew Forest fans would literally riot if Copper was sacked after so many players were brought in .

Whereas most of the time our fans have shrugged their shoulders and occasionally actually agreed a manager needed to go.

Ok we all agree Edwards should have stayed .

Credit to them though as looks like it might pay off .

I’m guessing Harvard Business School don’t teach leopard spot changing, but they certainly teach strategic management. Maybe Gino thought he could bunk off those classes.

If the new fella brings passion, heart and desire to the team I'm all for it. Winning the fight in this league usually puts you in with a chance for the play off places. How many matches this season did you sit back afterwards and say damn we played well? We outfought them? The scum at home when they were mostly unwell! We are powderpuff and that's more embarrassing than anything imo. Middlesbrough away, they were not shy on hitting the ball long into the channels and it worked because they had willing runners. Give the guy a chance before chastising him. It may just work.

Looking back, and love or hate him - our biggest drop off in recent years was when deeney left.
Yes there were issues and not all players liked him, but was it because he mouthed off too much and had a clique or was he a great skipper but several lethargic new comers weren't interested.?
Either way a major part of our problem (IMHO) has been the lack of a solid captain (good player, chivies the team, leads by example).
We've had some very solid captains over the years and for me the lack of real punch and leadership as I deem it, just has not been present and it has really shown (too many Spineless performances).

Everytime we went 2-0 up, the player's turned into show boating ponies. As a team we have a serious problem of going ahead then sitting back. We're Watford, not Arsenal. Sitting on a single goal lead will always bit us in the rear. Scoring goals this season has also been a massive problem. With the "talent" we have had, we should of been scoring a lot more, but our midfield has been dire for most of the season. It's going to take a long time for us to return to the standards of how we know Watford can perform with the right players and the right man at the helm. This next choice might be make our break for us. If we have another bad season from August, we might just be sitting in the wrong bottom six.

Agree, there was some weird form of over confidence with too many players which in minutes could just evaporate. Just too many show ponies that refused to put their body on the line.
I hope any new players have a bit more energy than what we've seen lately...

Wilder called exactly this out a couple of weeks back. Pretty sure he said we'd get ahead in a game and then for reasons him and his coaching staff couldn't figure out most of our players would just go off script, start doing their own thing and lo and behold the opposition come roaring back into it. It's bonkers really as normally the easiest thing to do when you're winning a regular league game is just to keep doing the same thing.

Absolutely agree. This is a my major concern with Ismael. His entire managerial career has been bouncing from one club to the next. Now under normal Watford circumstances it would make sense. However we being lead to believe that there will be a change. This appointment literally proves there is no change and Gino will carry on acting the way he has. Its another stop-gap in the manager merry-go-round at Watford FC and he will be gone by the end of November is my prediction, but at the very most, we will start 2024 with a new manager. No chance does he last the season. It’s incredibly short sighted yet again. Not only is his appointment (if he gets it) bad for the club, how on earth are we signing the 15-20 players he will need to play his system. Bottom line is, unless by some miracle there is an investor and we’ve got millions to spend, this is looking like one massive failure again.

I’ve seen a few posts on here arguing that Ismael is a short-sighted appointment since there’s no way his style of play would work in the PL. I find that baffling. Ismael’s approach seems uniquely well suited to punching above the side’s weight, as he showed with Barnsley. In compressing the pitch and rushing the opponents with a high press, Ismael’s sides are able to mitigate any underlying gulf in quality. In contrast, playing Farioli or Martin’s style of play with the squad we or any promoted side would likely play in the PL would be suicidal. Brentford, for instance, have excelled by using long ball methods and for years Stoke and Burnley pitched well above their weight similarly. That I think is why he almost got the Palace job instead of Vieira in 2021. Besides, I think viewing him as a long bull merchant sort of misses the point, which is that what is innovative about his style is the aggressive press and compression of the pitch.

Now my concern is that his style is much more suited to finishing 15th in the PL then it is to finishing 2nd in the Championship. He had some difficulty at WBA at breaking down low blocks set up by bottom half teams willing to show up at the Hawthorns and soak up pressure.

    What might have been eh.

Anyway, it's all irrelevant now as we've appointed VI and it will be confirmed soon.

He (Manga) literally said that Gino needs to stop hiring and firing managers. That long term consistency is the way forward. I find it strange then that the manager we choose to hire is a manager whose average term at a club throughout his entire career is less than a year.

His record as coach (from Wikipedia). Never stayed anywhere longer than 50 games. Would be great if we could get in under his Apollon total and sack him before the first game, we have our reputation to think of

If it is Ismael then I am more than prepared to give him the benefit of the doubt. See if he adapts the style to the players he has. People make mistakes. The better ones learn from those and progress. And also that he is backed by Manga and the owner with what he needs for his style of play. Even technically gifted sides like Argentina play a similar style. Press hard like mad from the front, force turnovers or squeeze the midfield and get the fullbacks down the side. Possession is not nine tenths of the law anymore. It's what you do with it. We've seen enough aimless passing for the sake of it this season.

Cooper is a great keeper. But what we need for an Ismael keeper is someone who sweeps up balls in behind. No idea if Cooper can do that but that is the number one criterion for the style of play.

Players do make sideways moves in the league. Dom Hyam Coventry to Blackburn and Harry Cornick/Kal Naismith Luton to Bristol City are some recent examples. It does happen.
