How ridiculous. He could have been played as deeper-lying playmaker complementing Watson, Capoue or Behrami, or better still in a free role as Mazzarri employed Hamsik at Napoli with two of those providing the solid anchor between defence and attack.

Blame Mazzarri for not doing his homework on what Abdi is really capable of or Gino for not keeping him, rather than someone who hasn't been at the club for two months while thinking every other current key decision maker is beyond criticism.

You really think that Mazzari just looked at how Flores played him and decided based on that? Really? No talking to Gino or anyone else, here or at Udinese? No looking at film from past years? No talking to the player? No observing on the pitch?

Look, I love Abdi, but the unfortunate truth is that he's not quick or fast enough to play in a central attacking role at the highest level. That's why he didn't start there for us last year, that's why he can't make his national team there. He's a fantastic man, a great man to have in the dressing room and can do a fair enough job in any number of positions just because of his intelligence and work rate. But the hard facts are that he wasn't going to be first or probably even second choice in his preferred spot. If the first or second choice were injured, we'd bring in someone ahead of him. It's sad, but he's better off. I wish him well.

Admittedly, I'll fell better about it once I see who the new bloke is. Slow but smart and hard-working is better than nothing.

    That was classic Abdi .

Class above when played in the right position.

If Deeney, Ighalo , Cathcart and Watson are good enough to be premier league players then Abdi is as well as he was better than all of them in the Championship.

As much as I loved him in a Watford shirt he hasn't got the pace for the prem. I'm over him!

Seen this written a few times and it seems such a strange way of judging a player's ability to play in the Premier League. There are lots of creative midfielders who have cut it in the Premier League who aren't particularly quick - eg Mata, Silva, Ozil, Eriksson, Modric and even players like Hoolahan and Cabaye.

I don't get this wasn't good enough mantra being touted around. He wasn't played in his proper position, and when he did play he did a job. I'm gutted that he's gone, and believe we should have kept him. So where are these ****ing attacking midfielders then. The one we were linked to is ****ing injured for the 1st month of the season at least. Getting rid of Abdi was a **** decision.

"They seem to have nailed this pass and move football," says a Wednesday fan. Watford, unfortunately, lost their nails a year ago and haven't found them yet.

You are aware he is a CAM not a winger ?

Was he a good enough player to build a Premier League team around? That's the killer question. I'm not sure he was, in which case once the formation differs from what suits him it's understandable that he moves on.

It would have been right this year though ? We can only have let him go as we are planning to sign someone better in that position. Not much luck so far !!

A month to go yet. Lets not moan about a transfer window that is only half way through.

The season starts in less than two weeks, we've let people go and still need at least three players in key positions. Not ideal

If nothing is sorted soon we are going to get slaughtered by Chelsea,Arsenal,And Man Utd at home that's not going to help our confidence. The players we needed should of been sorted by now.Big mistake to let Abdi go as he is really the only attacking midfield player we had.

  32. UEA_Hornet

Not ideal - sums up a lot of pre-seasons at a lot of clubs doesn't it? It's the product of the stupid transfer window which runs a few weeks into the season.

  33. Steve Leo Beleck

    Steve Leo Beleck Squad Player

Not to mention that with the exception of Ake, our transfer work once the season had started last year was terrible - Oulare, Ibarbo, Diamanti and Guedioura all arrived and only made 3 league starts between them all season. Last year all of our better summer signings (bar Ake) were those that had bedded in during pre-season. We have to hope that whoever joins us in the next two weeks can get up and running in the Premier League pretty much straightaway.

For finding developing and selling on young talent yes but not for competing in the a la carte menu against bigger clubs with bigger cheque books. Not what they did at udinese or Granada.
