When we had Hoskins here, if he was played, he was played out of position or up top on his own against big centre backs whilst having balls hoofed over the top to him, no wonder the lad didn't score. We had a proven striker and wasted him.
And the crap written about him on these boards by people who didn't actually know anything about him first hand didn't help the situation.

I agree he got given a lot worse than he deserved, and I was delighted with him when he found the net against Ipswich to grab us an important 3 points, as he got cramp and had to go off.

However, I have to question that we had a 'proven striker' - because yes he was a proven goalscorer in leage 2, but he was far from proven when he made the step up to the Premiership/Championship.

"Manager Gary Megson says Sheffield Wednesday have ended interest in one of their transfer targets after being quoted a 'brainless' £600,000.

The Owls are on the hunt for a striker this summer, with Norwich's Cody McDonald and Rotherham hitman Adam Le Fondre thought to be on their radar.

And while refusing to name the player and club in question, Megson made it clear that Wednesday will not pay inflated prices for their targets.

He told the Sheffield Star: "One of the things we suffer from is that the minute clubs find out we're interested, they think they're going to win the pools, because it's Sheffield Wednesday.

"But this club is run as stringently as Blackpool were when I was there. We're not the Manchester City of the First Division. We've sold more than we've bought. So we have to suffer with that.
    Brainless

"We've just gone for a player where four teams offered around the same amount of money, yet the chief executive is hanging out for around £600,000, which is not going to happen.
    "

My guess is that Megson is talking about Le Fondre. I reckon we could be one of the four teams who put a bid in for him as well.

infact it appears that Brodsworth Fc have pulled off a major coup, bringing him in 'in exchange for a sheep and a box of rice crispies!'

Rotherham want a figure close to £500,000 for Le Fondre (Sheffield Wednesday have already had a £200,000 bid rejected and are considering making a new improved offer) and Norwich want £600,000 for McDonald.

I think it's fair to say we won't be going in for McDonald at that price!

Whys that then? Rumours from Stoke are that ****inson cost £600k.

  12. DrewH

    DrewH Administrator Staff Member

Because 1. he isn't worth that much and 2. we probably don't have £600k left to spend. Also we got ****inson for around £250k plus add ons.

I think if we felt him to be worth that then we could afford it, there's no real reason to assume we couldn't, so far we haven't even spent all of the money we got for selling just Buckley.

There must be still a good chunk of money left... just counts if the club feel it is worth spending that.

The only down side i can see to maybe getting anouther 1/2 strikers is rotaton... like every player they will all need games to keep them selfs sharp. But in saying that the competition for places would mean the lvl of effort would be higher.

We need another striker. Sitting on Iwelumo, Sordell & Deeney (can play wide), is definitely not enough.

As Nath has said, of the players we've signed, only ****inson, Yeates and Iwelumo have cost us money - under the £1m we received for Buckley alone. With all the bigger wage earners finally gone, and the wage cuts that some of the newer signings have taken, I reckon we'd probably be able to offer around £500,000 for our final permanent signing. Even after that, we've turned a profit this summer by losing 3 player (£££ for 2 of them) and Judas, and still managed to add strength and depth.

I'd say we've been very shrewd in our dealings so far this summer.

At any point has anybody said that we are in for ALF at all? At any point has even a rumour surfaced about him to us? This is the most ridiculous thread because everyone is saying we could be, yet this is all hope, with not even the tiniest bit if substance to it. I would bet my bottom dollar we're being far more prudent and looking at a far cheaper striker. If we sign ALF, I'll eat a ball of my own pubes.

    I don't think so!

Nothing has surfaced about us with any other striker I don't think... yet. I'd rather we were in for MacDonald rather than ALF anyway if either of them.

I think the only striker we'd know of who could return is Weimann, but that will only be a loan, if anything.

I don't understand the problem with Deeney? His second half to the season promises much and he could IMO be a very useful player.

Give the lad a chance to impress this year!

ADAM LE FONDRE is having a medical at Watford tonight, and will be officially signed for an undisclosed fee tomorrow (Wednesday), as will the year loan signing of SAM VOKES from Wolves.

Promising as a wide midfielder maybe but not as a striker. Doesn't look like he has that goal-scoring knack at championship level

Sorry but Deeney is as obvious a forward as you can get, simply is not a winger, doesn't have the attributes to play there.

...except that he put in some decent perfomances in a wide midfield position under Manky, and how many goals has he scored so far playing up front?

Are we counting the own goal against Leeds?

  31. Nnnn

True! The worst part of it is he doesn't even LOOK like scoring when playing as a centreforward. Can't knock is work rate & attitude though and he does link up well with other players. Despite not being built like your typical midfielder or winger, he does perfom pretty well in that position.

  32. Chris G

I do prefer him out wide. He works really hard and wins a lot of the contested headers. I don't think he has been given the chance to prove himself up front yet. Pre-season means nothing.

  33. JLuck16

He's barely played up front and apart from being able to run is poor out wide.

  35. Nnnn

He doesn't look poor out wide at all, which is why Manky kept playing him there ahead of Buckley. He's had a few chances up front & has done absolutely zilch every time.
