Z Cars

Listening to FIVE LIVE and a ? came up why do Watford play Z-Cars before the game, anyone know ????.

I don't.

 

I remember at Everton away last year we asked an Evertonian who had it first and he predictably said they did and he said nobody understands why we have it :]]

Is that the same bloke that used to leave all the cars in the rookery car park jacked up on bricks?

 

Everton had it first, we got it a few months later (I don't think we got it because of them, just a coincidence... this was the late 60's I think)

That drum roll still gets me juices going !

 

For me that song IS Watford.

I don't really care who else has it, or who had it first.

The Z-cars theme was introduced sometime in 1963 by our then manager Bill Mcgarry (who was born in Stoke)
The tune certainly worked wonders for our home form, as after it was first played we were undefeated for 29 home games (a club record)

Everton also introduced the z-cars theme in 1963..but im not 100% sure who played it first.

 

Absolutely right, and he did introduce it because it was his favourite TV programme!

It will be interesting to see what happens next time the club try to get rid of the tune now that Ollie Phillips isn't around to champion it.

 

Without having the context of the show and growing up watching it, and hearing it played week after week, I have to say it is a dreadful little tune.

 

I've been going since 1969 and I would dump it. I'm well bored of it.

It would be as lame as whatever it is we run out to in the second half where you get fat middle aged women clapping along to it like a Butlins holiday cabaret session.
