Hmmm. Still plenty of the season to go. A few injuries to us, our usual cold weather (last 2/3rd of the season) slump and Everton getting a new manager finally and they could claw it back. Remember how few points separated the pack outside the top 6 last season.

Hubristic to say they'll finish below us.

I feel pretty sure that Everton will come 7th this season.

I do reckon they'll finish above us. I won't begrudge them it. But if some of their fans end up coming back to gloat over it then it shows how far we've come as a club - or how low Everton's standards have slipped.

It just reconfirms that when it comes to getting ‘results’ BFS is a very very good manager. Apart from the latter period at Bolton, he’s generally only ever had crap players at his disposal, yet he’s always got results. It may not always be easy on the eye, but with probably the best set of players he has ever had at his disposal, I’d definitely back them to finish ahead of us now. Silva is no doubt the more exciting manager, but we’ve seen his lack of experience in recent weeks and I’d say there is a good chance in a parallel universes were Silva went to Everton they’d finish in a lower position than BFS will manage with them.

Sam has only had 3 games. Let’s see how he does after the next 5 which has a nice mix of winnable away games and tough top team encounters. Still think they’ll finish above us but the Unsworth win against West Ham was massive for Everton confidence.

We will not go ahead of Everton again this season now.

Remember the time a (sheff weds I think) fan bet before a ball was kicked that we wouldn't get out of the bottom 3 all season in 1999/2000. We only needed a draw in the opening game to do it. We did lose the first game but we did get out of the bottom 3 at some point.

This weekend we have brighton and they have chelsea. We win and they lose and we go above them.

So to sum up. Yes we might.

I still think they will finish above them but we may still go above them again for a bit.

For that to happen we have to beat Brighton. And that isn't going to happen. We would lose to a League 2 team at the moment

Everton have just lost to Burnley. If we win this afternoon, we will go 2 points ahead of them. Interesting.

I would like this post, but I cannot countenance the idea that we might consider a draw an acceptable result here.

No, I think that ship has sailed.

  23. Does 7th place get Europa League under certain circumstances? If so what? I've looked on Wiki and I am none the wiser. If we beat arse, 7th is definitely feasible.

Arsenal would have to win the Europa League and finish outside the top 4.

Happened last season with United and Everton.

If a team qualifies for the Champions League and wins the FA cup, then the FA cup winners slot goes to 7th place. 6th will also get a slot as Man city won the league cup.

If one of the top 7 win the FA cup and Arsenal win the Europa league then 8th will also get a Europa league place next season.

England get 7 spots in UEFA competitions as a maximum.

The FA assigns the 4 Champions League spots to the top 4 in the PL. Then there are 3 Europa League spots which are assigned one each to the 5th placed PL team, the FA Cup winner and the League Cup winner. If the FA Cup winner has already qualified for europe through the league their place goes to 6th in the PL. And if the League Cup winner has also qualified europe already their place goes to 7th in the league.

If Arsenal win the Europa League (hahahaha) they will qualifiy for the Champions League. But that comes about by us 'swapping' a Champions League spot for a Europa League one. So it'd be a 5/2 split (exactly like this season) rather than 4/3, in favour of the Champions League allocation.

That's not right I'm afraid. That was how it worked until the start of last season, when UEFA changed the rules. There's nothing for 8th, just like FA Cup runners up no longer get the Europa League spot if the winners have already qualified for another european spot.

  27. Thanks - so are you saying that if one of the top 6 wins the FA Cup, 7th will get a Europa place?

    Or maybe Boreham Wood.

Strictly speaking, a pre season fixture but, until Brexit, a bona fide part of the EU.

    Keeps our dreams alive.

A 7th place finish would be amazing if it was achieved. Putting Europe to one side, it would be our 2nd highest finish in the top tier :). I expect this 7th place talk will end after our next 2 games !

Especially as Burnley and Leicester have got visits to the Hawthorns in that time.

Burnley have very easy looking fixtures from now until the end of the season, relative to ours so will take something pretty special for us to make up a 4 point gap
