Thierry Henry was asked who will finish higher, Watford or Everton.....and no he didn't fall off his chair in fits of laughter. He took the questions seriously and said that he expects Everton to finish above us....just.

Now his answer is not really too surprising, but the fact the question was even asked in the first place and is taken seriously, shows how far we've come this season.

Are we really being compared with Everton? Wow......that's a massive compliment to the club if we are being seen in this light.

Look at how far we've come!

Outside of City, United, Chelsea, Liverpool, Arsenal and Spurs, the rest of the league is complete and utter dross, fully expect us to finish 7th this season.

Lets hope teams in the top 5 win the League and FA Cup so we can get a crack at Europa next year (Is that how it works?)

Win without the top 6 is 14/1 with BetVictor.

I actually agree with you. We have a real chance of finishing 7th this season. The top 6 will be the top 6, but the rest is up for grabs. We cannot be complacent though and have to be injury free (yeah right), but I firmly believe we have as good a chance as anyone finishing 7th as long as we continue our progression. I do think we need to invest in the defence in January though which should improve our chances even further.

I certainly think the whole Leicester thing has made the top teams (with the exception of Arsenal) raise their game. The difference between the Manchester clubs plus Chelsea (not counting the Burnley blip) and the rest has been very stark so far this year.

Liverpool and Arsenal still have some issues and Tottenham will struggle to be top 4 this year because of Wembley.

It is looking good for us to be competitive in the best of the rest, including against Everton, but it is still very early days.

I'm not sure I want Europa league football. Every team bar manu has massively struggled in the league when in the Europa.

Our squad isn't strong enough to compete on both fronts.

Looks like Prem Division 2a (sole member: Everton) has been abolished. We have a good a chance as anybody of winning the new Division 2.

As above. The Manchesters, Chelsea and Spurs will most probably be the top 4. But outside of that Liverpool and Arsenal have faltered and along with Everton, for me make up the second premier division, maybe if we continue as we have started this includes us.

Before the season started I expected the rest of the teams to be reasonably good (see the narrow range of points below the top 7 last year) and thought we might struggle. In reality they all appear beatable and have less quality than I expected.

Top 4 finish, which is an outside bet, was 250/1 recently.

Everton one of my favourite away days. It is an Aristocrat of a club, with great fans history and tradition. I dont think they have been out of the top ten in the last ten years. to be challenging them for one of the 5 -10 places is a huge endorsement of the Watford owners, management and players. But i will be very pleased once we have achieved 12 wins this season and virtually assured our Premier league status for the future. if the team hits anything better than 11th other clubs will start looking at our players, but we should be able to attract quality replacements. Being top 10 though is probably harder to maintain over time than any target set for the club before. Look at Leicester yo-yo last three seasons.

I would take relegation for one season in Europe, I would expect a number of us younger fans would agree.

Champions league maybe but the Europa league is the continental equivalent of the League Cup in my view.

Opposition fans reading this thread will likely think we're getting way ahead of ourselves, merely discussing top 7 finishes just because we've picked up points early. But it's the way we've been playing, rather than the points accrued, that brings this optimism. I feel like we have the ability to hurt most teams in the league.

To put it in perspective, there is no way we would have scored the winner at the weekend under Mazzarri - we didn't have the players or tactical setup to do so. It's a different story this season.

Everton Drew 1-1 away at Man City, we lost 0-6 at home, I would be very happy to be proved wrong though, if we finish in the top half then that is a realistic and would be one hell of an achievement.

No way, it's a darn sight harder to get promoted than it is to be relegated, if we got relegated there's no guarantee we would come back straight away, slowly improving our position in the P.L. Is the way to go!

Man city needed a last minute goal to beat Muff. We beat muff easily.

It's all about on the day. City weren't firing on all cylinders then. Now they are on fire. Everton at the moment would go the same way as the rest of us v city.

Totally agree with this. The City game was heavily influenced by poor officiating on the day. 0-6 under normal circumstances would have been 1-3. Still a loss but a much closer result.

As you say, city have now clicked into gear and are a much more impressive side now then they were in the first couple of weeks of the season, where they were still finding their feet.

City's last four results have been 5-0, 4-0, 6-0, 5-0. Just incredible stuff.

Beware the Ides of Optimism ..

Don't want to put any sort of dampener on what has been a brilliant start BUT..

That's all it has been so far - just a good start.

League positions yoyo with a couple of good or bad results.
We move from 4th to 10th to 6th in the space of 14 days.
Newcastle were 4th last week with fans talking of Europe but now after the Brighton loss down to 10th with the usual (for Newcastle fans) negativity.

So far so good but Chalobah and defenda injuries, a couple of poor results, Arse and Chelski up after WBA - it can all change quick.

I prefer to judge after 10 games.

If we can get top 10 it would be brilliant.
But I think Everton with a stronger squad will start moving thro the gears and get up there and end up above us. Hopefully I'm very wrong.

One thing I bet Tom Cleverley is pleased about thro - that he's playing his heart out for Watford every week and not sitting on the Everton bench.

The real question is, who will finish higher, Watford or Man City?

Personally I see us overtaking them on the last game of the season away at Man Utd to clinch the title.

Exactly. Great start but WBA are only 4 points off the drop zone. They beat us on Saturday and they go above us. A top half finish would be a massive achievement and I would happily take that.

I agree, caution is required. Just take last Saturday for example. Silva makes a debatable tactical change Swansea get on top then equalise. Mariappa makes a game changing block to deny a certain second Swansea goal. Had Mapps not done that, Swansea go 2-1 up and would have probably won the game from there. We would have dropped down to 13th only 4 points off relegation, Swansea actually would have also gone above us.

Watford would have had back-to-back defeats. People would be slating Silva for the tactical change and the optimism would be virtually gone.......so fine lines indeed.

Having said that, these points are massive a massive step towards safely this year.
Compare with CP. if they lose to MU and Chelsea they would need 40 points from 30 games to get to 40. That means roughly winning as many as they lose e.g. W10 D10 L10. We can get to 40 from here with W7 D8 L 17. Massive difference after only a few games.

All true, unless you consider that Holebas should have been sent off quite early on, in which case Citeh might have scored more, even without help from the officials.

Although we are perhaps getting a little ahead of ourselves, I think it's the nature of how we are playing that has got everyone enthused again after a very very awful end to last season.

We look like getting a goalscoring opportunity every time we go forward. We are so very pacy up front. Our midfield is looking rock solid and creative at the same time.

Defensively we all know there are issues due to injuries and yet man city aside we've conceded 1 in 4 games.

It's good to stay grounded and level headed, and of course obviously this early in a season a win or loss could have a big shift in position.

But it no longer feels like panic stations if we do lose. If we had lost at swansea I am confident we would have picked it up v wba.

If we lose at wba I have no doubt this team will pick it up v arsenal or stoke.

We have consistency of play. A consistent style. Players in the right positions. Playing with confidence. We have decent options off the bench if required.

    It's all positive right now.

  27. 8th and best of the rest will be a cracking season

We have a lot of young talent to move forwards in the coming years and I have no doubt there will come a time we regularly finish above the likes of everton

I've said it before, we've had a team to match theirs ever since we came up and I mean virtually identical in ability. What we haven't had is the Goodison park crowd nor good fortune with injuries. This season we have improved our squad but I can't say the same for them.

I'd love to think we could finish above them (so potentially seventh or better). But in the last two seasons we've fallen away badly in the New Year.

However, we've now improved the squad and have Marco's hand on the tiller. We're playing with verve, speed, enthusiasm, togetherness and no little skill.

Consequently, the connect between fans and the hierachy (which was at least partially lost) has now returned.

So it's by no means an impossible dream.

Happy with anything from 9th to 14th. Show of progress. Anything above 9th, amazing, anything below 14th, disappointing. Football is already better than last year and have a feeling we are just getting started.

I think the overall quality of the league has actually evened out over time with all the TV dosh. Go back a few years and it was basically just Man Utd dominating the league, then Chelsea joined in, then you had a cast iron top four for a number of years that was basically impenetrable to anybody else including Spurs for a long time. Now the traditional top four has become a top 6 and obviously in between we've had Leicester winning the league. City and Chelsea are always going to be a league above, then you've got the next four below them, then Everton... then? In a few years no doubt it will be a top eight then a top ten and there is no reason we shouldn't be consistently in it.. people talk about the league being full of dross, I think that's true to an extent but the overall quality has condensed, we don't dominate the champions league anymore like we did a few years back, but we've got more teams with the potential to break into the top part of the table. At the other end there will always be disasters like Sunderland, Villa and Palace.
