That £1 plus a pair of odd socks would have really come in handy at a time like this

You're correct, it's not confirmed yet.

Here's a statement from the Southern League.

    League Statement 24th March - Season 2019/20
The Alliance Leagues held the latest of several conference calls last night (Monday) after our own board, and those of the Isthmian and Northern Premier Leagues, met over the weekend to determine how we wish to proceed. We have also participated in calls with the Step 5/6 clubs.

    End of season

The Step 3 & 4 Leagues share clubs’ frustration that it is taking so long to determine whether the 2019/20 season is to end now, and if so on what basis. To maintain the integrity of our competitions, we ideally need to apply one solution across all of the National League System. However, this may not be possible.

The Southern, Isthmian and Northern Premier Leagues are unanimous in wanting to terminate the 2019-20 season immediately.

Whether that is done on the basis of determining final placings via average points per game, or the season is declared null & void cannot be decided until the National League decides how it wishes to proceed.

Right now, the National League’s position is that they wish to be able to resume the 2019-20 season at some point. The feeder Leagues do not support this because our clubs do not have the financial resources to continue to honour player contracts indefinitely.

The Southern, Isthmian and Northern Premier Leagues have therefore implemented the process to terminate the season. This has to be ratified by FA council, so there may be a short delay as the relevant documentation is submitted, distributed and approved. Therefore, the League's desire is not the confirmed outcome.

Whilst this process is on-going, and once the National League has finalised how it wishes to proceed, competition issues can then be decided, together with the implications for promotion and relegation.

The implications drip through daily, like little nuggets of bad news. My daughter yesterday saw my dad close to tears on a video call, and asked why. When it sunk in that she wasn't going to see them for probably 3 months at the very least, she burst into tears.

People cancelling weddings, birthdays, bah mitzvah, bigger events like the Olympics and Euros. It's insane.

And in the face of this utterly unprecedented new world, there are still idiots who think they can carry on with non essential travel and gatherings as it doesn't apply to them.

China is not North Korea. They can fudge the official figures, for sure, but foreign journalists are free to walk about and see the daily lives of people.

Buying a live dog in a bamboo box, to be boiled alive, or eating a fish, which is still breathing, but whose flesh is carefully cooked and other important daily rituals are slowly returning.

I imagine that soon enough there will be a lot of international pressure on China to ban live animal markets, or at least actually enforce it if such a law already exists.

When that 80k is taxed, and the house you buy is £3m in Hampstead, then you will have a mortgage...

Saying that, given the nature that players move around, I suspect most of them probably rent mainly during their careers. But I bet they have eye watering rent payments on these houses. Anyway, my original points remains.

I also suspect there may be a lot of effort put in around the world to cull a large number of bats...

Agree that all of this seems pretty disgusting. However, what is the difference between eating a dog and eating a cow/pig/chicken.

This is a point often put to me by vegetarians

  12. You obviously have never seen how the dogs are treated, tenderised, or cooked alive. I swear as much a pacifist as I am I would pick up a cleaver and use it on the Chinese cooks without a seconds regret. Thoroughly disgusting practice and the west should ban all trade with China.

I accept that eating a dog is no different than eating a pig, however I would by just as disgusted if live pigs were transported about in the conditions dogs in Chinese Markets are kept, then put, live, into a giant wok over fire and held down with a big stick until they were cooked alive, or subjected to other deliberate torture before death, as some supposed enhancement to their flavour.

I get that was your point. Just thought this thread needed to be steered further off-topic and is an interesting debate.

When I worked in the financial side of sports management, the general advice to our client sports men and women was to get a big house on an interest only mortgage and save sufficient earnings in low-risk investments to pay off the mortgage at their expected career ending date (say 30 for footballers). That way, if nothing else they'll at least have a nice house when their career is over.

I very rarely quote anything sincere , life is too short but:

I genuinely feel for you, my son knows its all a bit weird but hasn't grasped the implications of self isolation and that he wont physically see his grandparents for a long time (we are using facetime to keep him in contact), thing is all we want to do is protect are families and keep them safe and its becoming increasingly harder.

Also aren't the tax ramifications much better than buying with a mortgage as opposed to paying cash?

    Update from football chairman.
They aren’t going to make a decision for some time and will see how the next few weeks play out.
The government have told them to await direction, so they are having a say in this as well

This is odd, the force could be nonsense, but I saw this which claimed that on the call yesterday between the government and the three governing bodies they suggested finishing the season in July as a definite possibility (likely still behind closed doors of course):

Though obviously they will need to observe for a bit longer how the virus progresses before they can confirm anything.

It's not going to happen, even behind closed doors.

Can anyone seriously imagine pansies like Pereyra going back onto a football pitch with a bunch of other players any time this year?

They are still talking about playing behind closed doors in the Midlands.

Well if the current isolating and self distancing guidelines are still in place they won't be able to play anywhere.

We must stop this madness. The season can't be written-off is it means the plucky little 'Muff Divers won't be relegated.

  30. I’d like to see how 9 / 10 PL games per side plus FA cup games plus European games fit into a month. Never happening. Fan fantasy.

I'm afraid that may just be the biggest emotional burden our society has to bear as a result of Covid-19. Together I'm sure we can all come together to mourn the death of the plucky Cherries' relegation hopes (and thousands of our compatriots).

God just think of the reaction if they count relegation so Bournemouth went down and we stayed up !
