Quite interesting listening to Gary Neville this morning aa due to him being part-owner of Salford, he can give more info than a lot of the other talking heads who aren’t privy to info.

Neville has said after the latest round of talks, that’s it’s getting more and more difficult to finish the season and it has ‘hundreds of complex issues to overcome’ which get added to and increase in difficulty with every passing day. He very much gave the sense that the EFL and PL are running out of opportunities to give ‘semi-decisions’ and are going to have to make the difficult ones very soon.

He said it would be easier if clubs came out and showed willingness to ‘lose out’ - ie. Liverpool saying they understand if the season is voided etc.

Ah yes but I understand they're getting advice from some clever technical set-play guru, and all of that will be fixed.

    Per the wobby....

No June finish or contracts discussed
    End of season schedules considered
Clubs remain committed to finishing season
General acceptance games will take place behind closed doors

I don’t think we should start up the season, think the moment has gone, but if they do start up again, don’t they simply test all players and staff the day before the match and you can only travel / play if your clear

You said you couldn't play football behind closed doors because it's a contact sport. What difference does it make where it's played?

Hey Knight just read again what I said in my quote that you have posted in your post above #145, and you will have the answer to your question.

I actually say "whether it is behind closed doors OR OTHERWISE when it is a CONTACT SPORT"

It wont be possible to observe social distancing at all times in some professions , football being one of them. So do we ban football until a vaccine becomes available ? (If it ever becomes available)

    This is what you said
, I am saying that playing behind closed doors would not solve the problem, because football is a CONTACT sport.

Cant see the or otherwise part

They should just allow, say, 10 really hardcore fans in to the stadiums standing spread across the stands to chant throughout the whole match.

The atmosphere of course won't be close to being the same, but they'll be audible and it'd be better than nothing (and better than recorded crowd sounds).

From page 11 of ‘Ways to End The Season Fairly’ thread’...

    @The Voice of Reason
Lets just get all the games played behind closed doors, but let some of the games be broadcast free to air whilst still having the PL reserved for those that pay for Sky etc.

Maybe a payment could be made to all lower league clubs by the government in return for TV coverage till the end of the season. This should be what is broadcast FREE TO AIR as a public service during this difficult time, so that those who have little else to do because everything else is closed could watch sport on TV.

Maybe other sport behind closed doors and other forms of entertainment could also be funded by the government and broadcast on TV so that we all don't go stir crazy’

Or does it not apply when you say it on another thread? Your opinions change depending on what thread you post on? You keep bringing up the part about football being a contact sport - it was a contact sport when you suggested the above? And it’s been known since Coronavirus hit our shores that it’s contractable by touch and/or airborne over a short distance. But you still suggested it. So what’s changed?

It’s things like this and other such ridiculous ideas (play the rest of the season virtually like the Grand National) that mean people pull you up on things.

Supposedly the dates which have been discussed by the PL as the "best case" plan are:

    - Pre-season/training recommencing on 10th or 14th May
    - Season resuming weekend of 13th-14th June to be completed by 31 July

This is subject to the NHS being at ease with the top flight restarting, and so the PL is giving the NHS power of veto.

    Never happening.

To bring players, staff etc. together even just to train before this is completely under control would be unbelievably irresponsible, and we may well still be in full lockdown on the dates above.

How or why they are still discussing and publicising such ridiculous dates and targets I genuinely have no idea. We aren't going to go from full lockdown, the peak of the virus, to everyone back to training in the next few weeks. It's madness.

It's all so desperate and ridiculous. Suck it up and void it off. Worse things have happened and some things are more important.

I'd also add that to me I would say that if they do do the unthinkable and start training etc. within the next month or so, it seems almost 100% inevitable that someone at at least one of the clubs will become infected, at which point they will immediately have to shut it all down again. Pointless.

It will likely never be "completely under control", in the same way that seasonal flu is never "completely under control".

Not necessarily if they conduct the regular testing.

It's no surprise that you're one of the more ardent doom-and-gloomers though.

Doom and gloom? **** me, there's a worldwide pandemic with millions sick and hundreds of thousands dying. It's not about doom and gloom, it's about realism and safety. I'm not going to apologise for thinking it's ridiculous to rush the football back potentially only weeks after the peak of this.

Let's see if the death figures even turn out to be much higher than those in a typical period... yes, you are quite evidently focused on the "doom and gloom", sensationalised assessment of what is going on.

Another thing which you glossed over in your rush to declare outrage - that is the PL's, and I'll quote it again, "best case" scenario.

Players training need be little different from what most of the average joe are already currently experiencing in their everyday walks around a park. In fact, it'll probably be safer due to the regular testing.

What was the point in the meeting on Friday if they did not agree anything? They should be able to define a time plan with a “latest” start date.

Work backwards from latest date to start next season.
    Transfer window.
    Gap between seasons.
    FL Play offs.
Time needed to complete league games.
    “Pre-season” time needed.

You could also add in cup games, but I think all European and Domestic cups should just be cancelled to enable a sensible time to complete all leagues.

  25. lowerrous

    lowerrous First Team

Read my post above - they've currently devised a plan with an earliest start date.

There is of course also an acknowledgement that the date might also be missed.

I think their lawyers will be telling the PL to keep meeting, keep talking, keep coming up with revised plans, etc., so that when the inevitable happens and it is clear that the season has to be voided, no one will be able to accuse them of not making an effort to be ready to complete the season.

Testing would have to be at a point where players are tested virtually everyday, otherwise the risk of infection is very high. Given that we can’t even test the NHS frontline, across the board, that does seem a very long way off. Given the financial implications the PL are hoping something will come up and will give it as long as possible, but I’m sure they realise that the odds are against a re-start.

"Focused on the doom and gloom". Well in essence and considering the current state of the world, yes, obviously.

If there are a boat load of positives at the moment as most of the world is in lockdown, people are getting sick and dying, financial security and job security is at an all time low and the economy is taking a pounding, then please do enlighten me as to what exactly they are?

I suspect this is exactly what the PL want - we did everything we could but then those kill joys at the NHS told us we had to void the season. Best case scenario for the PL boys

I mean, you act similarly as if it's the end of the world on here after each time Watford lose a match.

Oh okay, so you do then also recognise that the longer football clubs are out of action for then the more likely it is that those involved in the industry will suffer further financial losses and even lose their jobs.

  32. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

I suspect if the PL come anywhere close to blaming the NHS, then the backlash would be severe. It would be a huge PR own goal given how people have taken the NHS as the biggest cause of support and concern over the past weeks. Given how many clubs have opened their stadiums and facilities to the NHS, I doubt very much they’d accept blame being put on the NHS.

Blaming the government, however. That would be a goer.

The jobs (within football) from a purely employment point of view are of course important. But anyone thinking that training will be starting in a month I think are kidding themselves.

@GoingDown nailed it in the week - the whole thing is incredibly likely to be voided and the authorities are just giving everyone as soft a landing as possible from it.

    In what respect?

It also doesn't answer the question of how to determine the title, European places, relegation etc. if the season had to be voided?

Ending the leauges "as is" was brought up a few times, but then you look at Fulham etc who could make top two. Troy Deeney's goal would of kept us up, and as funny as it would be to see Muff down, the backlash from sides would be even worse.

Void it, re-evaluate TV deals for a forthcoming season and extend players contracts if need be. Bin tbe Cups, and watch Klopp cry. As much as I hate Karen Brady, her shout her mouth off solution seems the closer atm.

Quite pathetic really, the way you're now using this as an opportunity to get digs in and compare my feelings and input on something so serious and devastating to so many to my attitude after a Watford loss. Grow up.
