What was that business about in the 2nd half when they got awarded a corner when Amrabat or Mariappa put it out for a throw, no way it was a corner or did I miss something???

We literally have no idea how to attack bar hoofing it to Deeney straight from the back or floating it into to Deeney from wide positions. It's embarrassing.

The problem being that our current creative player is sh*te, and the decent creative player is injured.

I reckon Deeney spent most of the weekend partying with his mate AJ, as he certainly was not at the races tonight :drinking:

We are going to need to drastically improve if we want to consider ourselves as Top 4 contenders next season.

It's just soooooooooooo boring. We actually defended well but then aimlessly hoofed it right back to Liverpool, from our centre back to their centre back, made absolutely no sense whatsoever! Weird.

Amrabat cant be blamed solely for the goal, the ball should never have been crossed in the first place. As a team we were so slack from the throw in leading up to the cross. No pressure on the ball, Liverpool players with acres of room to pick a pass while our players switched off for half time. Its a shame because we had worked so hard defensively to limit Liverpool uo to that point.

While we seem fairly well organised from a defensive view point we really are lacking going forward. The midfield sit so deep its no surprise that we hoof it so much and second balls around either box inevitably go the way of the opposition. When we get the ball down we can play some good football but even then we are just as likley to conceed possesion with a sloppy pass or bad decision.

There are positives to take from tonight and it wasnt a bad performance particulary. But Liverpool werent anything special and it does feel like an oppurtunity lost. We have the basis for a decent team at this level but we desperately need to add some creativity and width to the side.

The ref and lino infront of the GT stand were awful in the 2nd half. Capoues shot was tipped over the bar by the keeper for a goal kick and both Deeney & Okkaka were ruled offside when in behind the back line despite comprehensively being onside. Listening to that halfwit Jamie Carragher after the game, that scouse whine has to be a contender for worst accent to be found anywhere in the world.

Oh yeah, forgot to mention that the atmosphere tonight was fantastic, far better than the Swansea game. It was almost throughout that chants were being sung and even though it was a rather drab game, the fans were singing as if we were winning- highlight of the night for me.

Night games are sooooo much more better

Klopp very complimentary about our defensive organisation . First goal conceded at home in 520 minutes . He said we have improved massively in past few months .

Can't argue with criticisms about our lack of creativity though, but we dont have anyone in midfield who is able to beat a man and thread a pass .

Capoue needs to be sold , Cleverly has a good heart and engine but lacks quality on the ball and so should be no more than a squad player next year. Doucoure looks the business . Along with Pereyra and a new pedigree signing in CM we should look better in the middle which is where we ve failed all season.

Glad that Kabasele had another good game , I think he can possibly make the step up to first team regular

I've been pro-Mazzarri throughout the season, even during that bit in the winter where we were horrid, but I am now starting to sour on him as I come to the realization that we well and truly are incapable of attacking. I don't think we would've scored had we played two games' worth of football. The constant punting up to Deeney, who understandably won little as he was completely outmanned and alone, was infuriating. I was led to believe Walter's specialty is making something out of strikers who were previously Serie B journeymen. Where is that attacking talent? He can't even understand the basic principle of move the ball, create space, and exploit it for attacking purposes. Sure, our defence is good, but as Middlesbrough have demonstrated, that won't get you far enough.

To anyone saying Amrabat is at fault for their goal: are you bonkers? How could he have possibly anticipated that Can would attempt and perfectly execute a bicycle kick towards the near post? He was as close as he reasonably should have been, and on the correct side of him, too. Amrabat had a terrible game but that goal was top class, no defender in the league could have prevented it.

Niang went missing by the time we went behind and should've been subbed, he was useless after a good first 30 minutes. Janmaat needs to be on the right, not the left. Amrabat can't really defend and also can't really attack. Capoue was poor. Doucouré was excellent and Cleverley was good. The defence, especially Kabasele, was impressive. Gomes was good but not spectacular, because he never needed to be. Any Premier League calibre keeper would've made the same saves as he did tonight, not to take anything away from him.

We needed Pereyra and Zarate tonight. Their influence was sorely missed in a side that is pathetically floundering in attack. All that said, a 0-0 draw would've been a decent result (even at home), and we deserved one. Sometimes when beaten like we were you just have to shake your head, shrug your shoulders, and say fair play.

Really? Capoue had a fizzer which Mingolet made a great save from to tip over and Janmaat 100% looked up and deliberately shot near post to nearly catch out Mingolet. There's 2 more.

Does Prodl's not count as a rare effort on goal?

As I say we didn't really do enough to deserve much more though.

Do need more threat in attack or make the subs earlier..

You can tell Walter struggles through matches with that way he throws arms around or holds his head in frustration...

This constant battering Amrabat gets defeats me. He was up against Milner and Firmino for most of the game, yet their goal came from a pass from central midfield to a midfielder going forward. He was the right side of Can and could do nothing.

Going forward, when he has the ball is given absolutely no support. On several occasion so he was passed the ball wide, then surrounded by their players, whilst our "forwards" (term used extremely loosely) trot into the middle, as if they were on a Park Run. Amrabat was given no options and lost the ball. Do we really expect him to wriggle past quality defenders on his own, cut in, and send a raking 20 yarder into the back of the net.

He wasn't great, but he puts some real effort in, very few chances came from their left, which tells me, he did a reasonable job. In fact very few Liverpool chances came at all. The defence was not the problem. The bile hurled at Amrabat is being hurled in the wrong direction.

It is going forward that we deserve the criticism. Our Captain, makes far more contribution on Twitter and in the media, than he does on the pitch. He does nothing in most games, and lives off the little bit he does in the others. When did we last see a real battling performance from him? If there was one, when was the last before that? He is a shocking player at the moment, and Amrabat put in 3 times the effort than he did.

Going forward we are so toothless, so slow, so ponderous, so scared of running with the ball, that Liverpool handled everything at a canter at the back. What happened to the directness we showed when Deeney was dropped a few games ago? The success we had then spurred us on to a short run of decent performances and results.

I am not saying we should have beaten Liverpool last night, but it would have been great to see us play a bit of football in their half.

Next season we need a completely different outlook going forward, otherwise we will be fighting relegation next season, as sure as eggs are eggs.

An OK ish performance, but nothing special.

We were lucky that we didn't get caught faffing about with it on the edge of our own area, too many times, then the long balls out went straight to one of their centre backs.

Not sure why the subs to so long to make. Kabasele did OK when he came on, Capoue is still useless.

We at least made more of an effort in the last 15 minutes, but get the feeling that was the plan, keep it tight and keep in the game.

Regarding Amrabat being at fault for their goal, his not a frigging defender, he shouldn't be used as a defender.

We had three centre backs, all who failed to defend the ball on the edge of the box, Capoue who failed to pick up a central midfielder making a run and Cleverley who gave Lucas the freedom of Watford to pick his pass

How Amrabat is to blame go only knows

    Whoopee doo.

That great save was given as a goal kick and was going over the bar anyway. The stats say only 2 on target shots, so there must have been another one, which was the Janmaat shot. I remember now because it woke me up. I suppose two on target is good for us.

I see my warnings over still not safe are not being challenged anymore.......strange that.

  18. UEA_Hornet

I know it was given as a goal kick. It was the wrong decision. And it was dipping so it's impossible to say if it'd have hit the underside of the bar and gone in. Mingolet thought he had to save it and that's good enough for me. Come on, you normally love a good 'what might have been' scenario. Still...it doesn't involve you chalking off one of our goals so I can see why you're not keen.

As for your warnings it's not strange at all. I imagine people are just bored of groundhog day. We're still safe - even after last night the bookies are still not offering odds on us being relegated and all the pundits and commentators are talking about us being in the PL next season.

    ^^^ This.

Amrabat did not have a poor game. He could beat his man but had no support. He worked hard and didn't go missing like Capoue.
He was the right side of Can, and no one can legislate against a worldy bicycle kick, and you can understand he didn't want to get too close and be beaten or foul him.

Amrabat is damned if he does, damned if he doesn't.
He was being talked about as a POTS before his long injury layoff.
He can cross but forwards are not there or don't anticipate. We are too defensive until the final 15.

I don't understand the slating he gets.

That's just nonsense regarding Capoue's shot. At the very outside, it might just have clipped the top of the bar. What does what Mignolet thought have to do with anything?

People aren't challenging it because they don't want to discuss at length a combination of events deemed too unlikely by bookmakers to even quote a price.

However I must say I have a bad feeling about next season unless we make several key additions. Additionally we need Mazzarri to show some positives in these last few games or he'll have the fans against him from day one next season.

Still not totally convinced by Mazzarri but he got yesterday right imo. We tried to play expansive open football against Liverpool and lost 6-1. Until the last 20 minutes I can't remember Liverpool having a genuine chance. They beat us through one of the best goals i've ever seen and we were an inch away from Mazzarri's tactics working.

I also think the evidence of people's mind being made up already is clear by the Doucoure love in. I like Doucoure a lot and he's undoubtedly been one of our best players since Christmas, but he was awful yesterday. In the first half he gave the ball away pretty much every time he had it.

    Great goal.

Doucoure,Maps,Kabasele and Gomes all good. Deeney needs a quick player alongside him.

    Capoue yet again peripheral.

Linesman and ref dismal but worse than anyone was Barry behind me with his constant drivel.

    Be quiet man!

If he got it right, then we unfortunately don't have good enough players to get results against the top teams, we did against Man U and Arsenal but maybe we over performed on those two occasions and they both under performed.

Really Liverpool should have been out of sight when we hit the Bar, but when we play the top teams it is often the case of if! And last night was no different!

No, it's because we don't want another match thread ruined by you and certain other posters. Everyone made their feelings clear and the majority disagreed with you because we're all 'mugs'.

Anyway, back to the match, it looks like no one wants to be here next season. The Head Coach is terribly arrogant with his tactics and player selections, half that squad look disinterested and just want to jet off for their summer holidays.

Wouldn't be too upset to see a complete revamp of the squad over the Summer, from Deeney to Capoue to Mazzarri.

    Still excited for Leicester regardless.

Completely agree with the first point.

    Disagree with the second.

We let them have all of the ball, but they hardly got round the back of us. Most of Liverpools shots were decent long range efforts, which you would question Gomes for letting in.

To be out of sight, they'd have to have scored a huge % of their shots on target, which was never going to happen.

I don't normally offer criticism on the way we played, simply because I can't really be bothered to watch in much detail but I gave it a go today so will put forward my comments.

3 at the back doesn't work. It hasn't worked all season and It's not going to start now, so why persist. Kabaselle should have been on from the start instead of Crapooey.
Amrabat is not a defender. Going forward and runnign at people he is great, lacks the final ball accuracy, given some good coaching could be great.
There is no movement off the ball. People are not running they just sit where they are and wait for the pass and then moan when they don't get it. A lack of direction form Captain / Manager. We need the captain in midfield not up front so he can see this.
When we keep it on the deck and run with it we're a decent side but we lump it forward and lose it due to poor quality final ball.

To me it just looks like our players don't have an idea of tactics and the line-up shows that the manager doesn't either.

Sorry but for me the buck stops at Mazzari. He either has no idea of can't get his ideas across. The Italian game is too slow for the Premier league.

  35. Steve Leo Beleck

    Steve Leo Beleck Squad Player

He had more possession than anyone else in our team last night and the best pass completion. Obviously that doesn't tell the whole story but he certainly didn't give the ball away that much. I think people like him because of his attitude - he played one loose pass on the edge of his box in the second half, then immediately reacted first to get the ball back twice in the space of about five seconds. There's such an obvious contrast with Capoue who messed up a simple pass in an attack in the first half, raised his hands to the sky and then ambled back constantly about 15-20 yards behind the play.

Speaking of contrasts, Deeney won 0 headers in the first hour of the game. Fair enough the service is rubbish but I was amazed how many times the ball was near him and he didn't even challenge the centre backs, just let them head it away or bring it down. Okaka, on the other hand, sprinted on the pitch, got his body in front of the centre back from a long ball and won a foul after about 20 seconds. Why wasn't Deeney doing that all game if he couldn't win the headers? Surely if we're going to play it long quite often, he's got to make it as difficult as possible for the centre backs.
