FFS, just had a bright game midweek as an attacking mid, and now he gets shunted out onto the left. Gray and Deeney together might work I guess, but I'd have rather seen Perica instead of both of them, and still no Hughes makes me fear that he's the other one out with Covid...

 

Nope the only desperation is lack of choices.Ivic wants to win games and is trying to band aid 3 points today.

 

Lack of choices? Perica scored last time he started. Joao Pedro while quiet, was nowhere near as poor as Gray on Wednesday.
He tried a different formation on Wednesday and seems to have abandoned it already.

Can’t believe it’ll be 4-4-2 as Quina isn’t a winger. Surely Quina plays in a central 3 and Sarr behind Gray and Deeney...?

 

Fairly pleased with that general selection and approach, except for the fact that neither of the two strikers selected were Perica. Baffling.

Deeney and Gray have to be running out of opportunities surely?!

 

When was the last time we started Gray and Deeney together , can’t see it working but give it a go.

im glad we have Quina starting think he made mistakes but was at least giving it a go on Wednesday

 

Really baffled as to what that formation is. 4-4-2? 4-3-3? 4-3-1-2? Either way, there are players that are painfully out of position.

I know its popular to simply say that Gray and Deeney are rubbish and are out of chances and shouldn't be playing, but.... actually no, that's it.

 

Don't forget we've also got Femenia on the left, so doubly weak over there defensively. Not terribly familiar with PNE so I don't know who/where their danger men are, but... I don't see Sarr or Garner in any sort of significant defensive role - and obviously neither are Gray or Deeney. Sarr is better out wide, but there needs to be some balance. I think it's likely a 4-1-3-2 with Chalobah of course being the "1" (i.e. a true 6). Quina and Sarr alongside Garner, but Quina likely being told to pick his spots and not always charge forward.

 

He played on the left of midfield vs Bristol and did pretty well when he was towards the flank, it meant he could cut in off the flank to shoot with his right foot. He could be a narrow left "winger" in a four, not dissimilar to when we had Hughes on the right in the PL (but with a tad more attacking intent).

It makes more sense to have Quina slightly out of position as a left-midfielder to allow Sarr to play in his preferred position, than to have Sarr out of position to accommodate Quina.

 

Dont mind that lineup actually. If Quina position dont work a change can be made.

 

Trying to be positive here. Deeney and Gray does not lead to pretty football but was crudely effective against the likes of West Brom, Everton, Leicester in the Premier League.

Neither of them has really been in form for about two years but maybe, there's still a little left in that partnership? If they misfire today after giving it the big one about playing together, then hard to see any future for them as starters.

 

Line up looks interesting. Props to Ivic for that much.

Fancy Gray to score today, useless in building up play, useless in controlling a football but if Deeney can knock something down for him to run on to I trust him to put it away.

Gray is our main striker according to Ivic.

 

If Gray can get 40 odd goals at this level playing with Sam Vokes surely he can get one playing with Deeney?

I’m happy to see him give Deeney and Gray a go up front together. Grays best performances have been along side Deeney, so if either are going to work in the championship , it’s probably together .

To be fair if our plan is to get down the wings and put balls into the box then at least we have a couple of forwards in the box and Quina will probably make forward runs as well. We have been putting the ball into an empty box time and time again this season this may actually work. Or maybe I have had a few pre-match Birra Moretti's and I am overly optimistic and Gray and Deeney will be as useless as ever.
