Clubs have less money = don't want to spend as much on transfer fee/wages = look to make up the goal deficit via other cost effective means. I also expect the introduction of salary caps in the EFL to also help with this, as everyone will be on an equal footing financially so clubs will look a bit deeper in how to maximise their on the pitch performance since they won't be able to just throw money at new players.

OK, thanks. It had just never occurred to me to think of this in “cost-effectiveness” terms before!

It's staggering that most of the PL hasn't thought of it in those terms either. A good set-piece coach/analyst could probably gain a PL team an extra 5 goals a season minimum. They can't get injured/suspended and would cost 30-40k a year. Yet the difference in cost between a 10 goal a season striker and a 15 goal a season striker is likely to be £5m-10m in transfer fees and probably 50k extra per week. Yet the number of clubs in the PL with a specialist set-piece coach/analyst is small (Brighton, Arsenal, City, Liverpool)

Yes, sorry if I didn’t make it totally clear in my previous posts I was referring to league goals.

I remember him (and I'm pretty sure I'm not the only one) smacking a loose, bouncing crossfield pass first time from about a mile out. Schmeichel in the Leicester goal never even moved for it until it bounced back past him from the back of the net.

Salary caps will favour the bigger income clubs so we will be nearer the bottom than the top when this happens.

Depends who is in the championship. I’m pretty sure we averaged around 15k previously so we’d be mid table, if we could somehow get nearer our attendance we’d be near the top:

Why? The cap is the cap. It’s not FFP?

Assumed salary cap would be limited to a % of income, is that not the case ? Our gates as an established champ club would be bottom half surely ?

  18. All salary caps will do is lock in a status quo. The idea of a Watford, Wimbledon, or Bournemouth going from the bottom division to top will well and truly be a thing of the past. No thanks.

Not sure about other sports but I believe NFL cap is fixed for all teams irrespective of revenue.

That’s true of FFP but not of salary caps imo.

I assumed it'd be the same value for all clubs, as in rugby.

I don't know but I'd assume it was unlikely. Had Leeds not gone up it would be bizarre to insist that Leeds could only spend the same on salaries as Wycombe and Rotherham for example, maybe forcing Leeds to make massive profits but unable to use their financial muscle to get promotion. Would be far more likely and sensible to say that a club can only spend say 70% of it's income on players salaries and transfer fees and to limit borrowing/loans. It's using debt to finance overspending in search of improved performance that kills clubs.

Depends what you're trying to achieve.

If you want to actually level the playing field, have a flat cap. Especially in the North.

Smaller clubs might not reach the limit of course.

Do they want to "level the playing field" ? Or do they just want to stop clubs overspending and going bust ? I assumed the latter ?

NFL is one of those socialist organisations much beloved of Americans. The draft, the salary cap, all designed to ensure everyone has a chance of winning.

  26. Jumbolina

Yes. But that’s FFP not a salary cap.

  27. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Of course but why are we thinking that salary caps are coming rather than a FFP derivative ? Is it just Reids speculating above ? We all know he knows nothing about football.
Actually a "salary cap" can be whatever you want it to be. A salary cap could mean your total expenditure on salaries is capped to be x% of your income ? It doesn't mean it has to be capped down to how much any individual player can earn.

I think that each player should wear a cap with their weekly salary printed on it during the match.

Would lead to much better informed booing and jeering during a game.

We could get Richard Lee to make them.

You’d have to think the big clubs would only agree to a salary cap if it was linked to revenue, or else they’d be signing away their competitive advantage.
