Troy Deeney

Always a tricky one this, nobody can deny the contribution Troy has made to the Watford cause over the previous few years and it is only right that he is given credit for that. By the same token Watford has also helped the Troy Deeney cause considerably, had we not taken him back following his troubled times then I seriously doubt he would have the profile and lifestyle he currently enjoys because he would have been taken on by someone like Oldham after a trial.

I do get the feeling that a fresh start for all might be the best thing but would have no problem with Troy being here next season either. Replacing him based upon last seasons return probably would not be difficult, however recovering from an operation and lengthy suspensions won't have aided the cause. Replacing him from previous seasons may be more difficult.

It is often reporting what an influence Troy is, however the thing that concerns me is when there is a bit of player revolt of the latest manager does he control that or instigate it? I have nothing whatsoever to base this upon but have a feeling that the 'group' may be better served without Troy in it these days.

If we could get the positive, effective Troy of a few years ago back then it is a no brainer, the Troy of the past couple of seasons, actually also a no brainer but different outcome. I'm sure decision makers will make the call based upon now and not 2/3 years ago so lets hope it's the correct one.

Sorry, Burnsy didn't mean to invade your territory with a monster post.

Deeney and Oulare could be the real deal this season, with Success in the hole.

I thought Deeney looked fit, determined and (for him) surprisingly fast at Brentford when he came on. He took his offside goal sweetly enough.

People talk about him like he's 40 rather than 30. He's a proven goal scorer at this level and is always useful for flicks on in the box etc as well as occupying and giving a physical battle to opposition defenders. By all accounts he's a "big personality" in the dressing room too and with Gomes also seemingly going, it's hard to think of anyone else who can be a big leader for the team. I think he's still got plenty to contribute to the team.

It looks like the move to Cardiff is off and I, for one, am rather glad.

Spot on. It's not about the offload of wages either, were better off financially than any other team in the Premier League this summer.

We have the lowest net spend on new players possibly? Not what he said I know but all I can come up with.

Whether that is a good or bad thing is something else.

Sky Sports goes a tiny bit further, thinks he's seen as a 'key player' this season.

"Watford have no interest in selling striker Troy Deeney this summer, according to Sky sources.

Cardiff City are understood to have cooled their interest in the 30-year-old following an initial inquiry.

And sources have told Sky Sports News that Deeney is seen as a key player in Javi Gracia's squad at Vicarage Road this season."

Good idea to hold onto Deeney, will be a great player to have when we're pushing for promotion from the Championship in the 2019/2020 season.

Theres a really good image to explain this but Im not sure how to attach images properly to posts.

Basically if you take into account what every team has spent and received on transfers this window then we are +28.6million which is more than any other club. We're followed in 2nd and 3rd by Newcastle and Leicester (Obviously could change before the end of the window).

What I'm trying to get at overall though is that we should care less about wages and transfer fees when we have such business savvy owners.

    Anyway glad Deeney is staying!

But we don’t have rich owners or huge sponsorship deals or anything else that offsets the outgoings (not just transfers). You said we are better off than every team and that really isn’t true.

While the conditions at the club are what they are, we will always have to worry about wages and transfer fee’s.

Disappointed in truth, he was awful last season and an absolute liability in terms of discipline.

In an age where a championship club can justify £10 million on Bamford, And Burnley think a 37 year old Crouch is worth a squad place, Deeney is worth keeping as a squad player for the next few years yet. For me at the start of this season he is still our first choice centre forward. Any fee received we would need to recycle very quickly to add a competent replacement. Personally i hope he stays another five years and if he moves into coaching and management takes his first steps with ourselves.

While Gino's in charge I'm not particularly worried.

Looking at some of the other clubs spending this summer I think they are taking greater risks financially.

  24. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

Because a lot of them have richer owners or backers than us.

I’m not saying Gino should be like them. Nor am I a huge critic of Deeney in relation to others. I just think Deeney needs to justify his wage and captaincy. He has done that in the past but last season was a huge disappointment and I don’t think he merits either anymore. He can’t trade of what he did in the past or expect to get leeway because of it.

I wonder if the club are/were entertaining the idea of keeping Okaka and selling Deeney? For a player who is supposedly a certainty to leave, Okaka has been very involved in the PR stuff (he was at the Junior Hornets day and was listed in attendance at the Sky filming session).

There's so much money in the PL I don't think this is a factor any more, covering spend isn't hard. That is unless you're going to go and spunk £50m on average players then you really do have to....oh wait.

  27. Chumlax

That could have something to do with the fact that we sold one player for a comical amount, and have barely improved our team from last season, avoiding recruiting in all but one of the positions we most desperately need to (that one being left back, of course).

I'm not sure being shoulder to shoulder with Newcastle in a financial and behind-the-scenes operational sense says particularly good things about us given the shambolic turmoil they're in. Obviously, we have good owners, they have appalling owners, but not having spent any money on the positions it's glaringly obvious to every Watford fan needed spending money on isn't necessarily something to boast about.

We're hurtling rapidly towards having a second disappointing window in a row, and who wants to be disappointed...

I'm glad he's staying. If he could reduce the muscle bulk he seemed to put on then he'd be more dynamic again and gain some additional pace.

Can still be a really decent asset if we get the service into him, and duelefeu and sema could well provide this from the flanks.

While I suppose it is curious that he attended those events, it isn’t hard to see why when you think about it. I doubt anyone would have really noticed had he not been at the Junior Hornets event - but all players attended so would have been strange to have kept him away. Had it just been a cross-section of the squad, I think he would certainly not have been there. As for the Sky event - I’m sure that was mandatory from Sky themselves. If a deadline day move falls through and then we have an injury crisis - and he’s suddenly gets a game, they will need the video thingy of him. Easier to just make him attend.

I’m still fairly certain he’s leaving as he’s been frozen out a number of times now.

It sounds like we are looking to bring in a striker. We can't keep the 3 from last season and add a 4th and as you say Okaka is the logical exit. Unless we are seriously considering playing 2 upfront, in which case....cough....Vydra....cough...

  32. Burnsy

What is strange is that Deeney himself just passes off his muscle bulk because he’s ‘naturally big’. But he was far more athletic a few seasons ago and it’s not as if he’s old. It all points to him actively putting that muscle on willingly. Why no manager hasn’t pulled him aside and demand he drops the muscle, I’ve no idea really. But I suspect it’s all down to this media persona he’s built up and now successive managers from abroad have been fooled into believing its the best possible version of the player - some macho, bustling CF. But a smaller Deeney is far better than that.

Personally I think it’s very unprofessional on his behalf to not be the best player he can be by making those adjustments. - and because he’s captain, he gets away it. I think the qualities he brings us a captain, he would bring anyway without the armband. He doesn’t need it and it should be given to someone more worthy.
