I'd actually argue that in the last year or so, direct counter-attacking football has generally replaced possession football (Guardiola, I'd argue plays a combination of both, but scores more goals when he breaks with his two quick inside forwards).

The problem is that Deeney rarely thrives against PL defenders in the air. This means he struggles to out-compete defenders, hold up the ball and set up counter attacks.

He's a useful option to have, and has done a lot for this club, but we need a more dangerous CF in the PL.

Yes it's always contextual and relative, though, isn't it. In the pantheon of our current striking talent, he's Speedy ******* Gonzalez.

On a related note - from the Wales Online article 'explaining' why Warnock might want Troy at Cardiff:

"Deeney is good in the air, comfortable taking the ball on his chest with his back to goal and still has a spurt of pace to trouble defences."

That's the post you've picked out to make your point with? Out of all the posts in this thread? Incredible.

Also, I've seen the Reddit thing that you lot are 'transitioning' to, it makes this place look positively rammo in the main room.

I find it difficult to criticise a man who without having here would probably mean the club wouldn't be where it is now. But then I'm a hypocrite.

  22. He’s been central to our success over recent years, and the clubs also been good to him - I imagine he’s comfortable for life. It’s been a fair exchange.

Now, next year, the year after... when it’s time it’s time. Will not damage his legacy.

I don’t think now is the time to move Troy on. We need some stability in the ranks - even if he plays less of a starting role than he used to. Reality is his vital goals against West Brom and Everton all but sealed our survival last year and I back him for a revival this year.

Apart from that he’s a club legend and leader and I think people are too quick to consider him disposable.

Troy has been a great servant to the club and has repaid the faith that Gino and Zola showed in him in giving him a second chance.
His influence on the pitch has declined and no one is irreplaceable but we all recognise we need an improvement on Gray,Troy and Okaka.
It's hard to see what will transpire but I certainly feel more anxious this pre season than in any of the previous three.
I'd be more comfortable if I saw Chalobah or Doucoure playing come Saturday.

Keep Troy. Sell Okaka. Loan out Jakubiak.

Buy a forward to challenge Gray and accept Troy will provide a very useful back up if and when called upon.

  31. The flicks and touches he played for Ighalo were top class in that first season, constantly highlighted by pundits for praise, and they come along with some decent, if not scintilating, technical play as well. That, combined with his physical game meant we had one of the most high profile, influential and capable front men in the league. He changed the minds of many of his detractors, most notably Graeme Souness, in that first season in the Prem.

I think it all depends if he’s happy being a bit-part player. When he’s come off the bench he’s regularly changed the mood of the crowd and team.

He’s got another season to offer us and any defense in the league will know they’re in for a battle if they see him coming off the bench.

    Keep him

If his wage is anywhere near what is claimed, and Gracia has made it clear that he’s not a guaranteed starter, the club will be happy to move him on. It’s that obvious.

  35. I disagree that it is that obvious, and believe that Gino will surprise many fans with his capacity for loyalty.

When asked who the Pozzos best signing was recently, Scott Duxbury said it was Troy.

I believe, without a doubt, that as long as Troy can play any kind of role at this club, and whilst he says he wants to be here, Gino will be happy to keep him on the pay roll. It's all about business, but, as with that doddering old cart horse Ude kept until the end of his contract, despite the shortage of stamp adhesive in Northern Italy, business sometimes rewards outstanding contributions with a loyalty. And Troy's contribution, predominantly in getting us here, but also in keeping us up, has been second to no other player, hence Duxbury's comment.

Gino will show, I do not doubt, loyalty to Troy's contract.

And though he wouldn't stand in the big man's way, I still believe that any decision to go will be Troy's alone, and rightly so.
