'set to target' - does that mean they are considering considering him? Preparing to consider joining the race? Thinking about perhaps slamming the door shut? All deze terminologies are weird
We've spent the last few seasons making it clear he wasn't for sale and teams have generally stayed away. If we are finally issuing a "come and get him" then I wonder if a few more clubs may suddenly step up.
As many have said TD is not the player he was so maybe it is time to put Walsall out of their misery and sell him on, but we really must sign a new improved replacement for him. So thanks for the many great memories Troy and good luck for the future, except when you are playing against us of course
Have to sell him for £15m. He's nowhere near good enough for the Prem, especially these days. Cardiff would be stupid to pay that but let's hope they do it. Hilariously blunt.
Umm, where did you read that? The article says "Cardiff City target Watford striker", and "Cardiff City are targeting". It bugs me whenever transfer articles use the phrase you mention (or its close relative "preparing a bid"), but this doesn't look to be one of them (unless the article has somehow been edited/sured up since you first looked at it).
One that annoys me that is often used is ‘monitoring’ Cardiff are ‘monitoring’ Troy Deeney... basically they’re not really doing anything then?
Was definitely on that article and has been changed. Maybe the author is on this forum and was considering joining the race to change it.
£15m isn't that much these days and we aren't shy of cash right now. Another £15m simply means selling clubs inflate the prices they'll quote us by even more than they already would have done given the Richarlison money. Say this sale deprives us of only the 3-4 open play goals he can reasonably be expected to contribute over a season and gives Cardiff those 3-4 goals, it could be the difference between relegation and staying up. Unless we have someone really special lined up (and by that I mean better than Origi) I think we keep him, use him sparingly and run him down. Or sell him to Stoke
I think generally he’s struggled in the premier league - not so much as to be without merit; he has scored a few from open play and is a reasonable link-up player, but ultimately I don’t think he’s irreplaceable by any means. Last season I think he was clearly far too immobile to play a lone striker role and I cannot see us being brave enough to go two up top any time soon. For that reason I wouldn’t be too disappointed if he left. He needs a fresh start and the club needs to move away from being the Troy Deeney show, as it has been for a while. £15m isn’t that attractive a proposition in and of itself, but we are unlikely to be offered more and the real financial incentive for us is to get £100k off the wage bill that can be reinvested elsewhere.
For the sake of Walsall's sanity, let this deal happen https://walsall.vitalfootball.co.uk/walsall-set-for-cash-windfall-from-deeney-move/ The first line: "I’m fed up of doing this story and getting everyone’s hopes up..."
Isn't it 20% after the £500k we paid; therefore if he doesn't go and his contract runs down and leaves us on a free then the profit will be -£500k and so Walsall will have to pay us £100k
Brilliant in a 442, or a 532, but lacks the pace and movement required of a lone striker. Right player wrong decade, tikka takka pass and move is king these days.
I have to agree even though Troy has been great for us. As captain there is a focus on him to be pencilled in every match. Particularly away from home we need more cutting edge and a refresh up front is desired by most fans.
Can't speak for ITKJim, but Hairyfrog I've known for donkey's years now and it's got on my wick seeing this. No-one will argue that Deeney's been below par for at least this Season, arguably two. (It's hard for any player to do will in the system Mazzarri played) However he's never been happy with him doing poorly either, as would most fans. Frustrated, yes along with me and everyone else on the forum but that's to be expected. I'd prefer Deeney to stay, even with his faults. These kind of needless pops at other users (Not from you specifically but just over the course of the last year or so) are why this Forum is slowly shrinking into maybe 10 active users and 20 moog alts and why I've transitioned away as well.
There's a junior Hornets thing on today and a lot (all?) of the players & Gracia are there. Deeney isn't. https://twitter.com/calpolll/status/1024266780016041986 Apologies if it's been mentioned today already but I'm not in the mood to go through posts to check - sorry.
Well I'm just going to go ahead and apologise again! I've just seen a picture from the event where Deeney is posing with a couple of kids. He is DEFINITELY there. The guy whose tweet I linked previously is talking out of his backside. Sorry for the mis-information folks.
I believe that if Troy is playing in a team set up for his style, in exactly the way we haven't been over the last couple of years, he will be good for 10-15 goals. Maybe, just maybe, it is only a matter of him not being good enough for the Prem when he's playing for Watford. Been saying since Quique left that moving to a team that plays to his strengths would be to his benefit. I think he deserves a chance to prove himself which he is not going to get here.
In my opinion, Deeney is at his best when playing alongside (or just behind) somebody with pace. Witness the success with Vydra and Ighalo. Maybe Gray is the current equivalent, and we should persevere with 2 up top ……….
