My children's schools ban nuts and anything with Nutella in it, while there are people who have other allergies there's no specific ban. As long as the school doesn't ban ham sandwiches in case it offends some fellow students I'm OK with it.

Unnecessarily London-centric news coverage. You'd think a motorway had never been shut for a weekend before the way the BBC, other media organisations and groups like the AA and RAC keep catastrophising about the M25. Last night a reporter stands in the dark on an overbridge looking out at roadworks telling her audience the moment of reckoning has arrived, may god have mercy on our souls. "Traffic is building" reports BBC News this lunchtime. The Royal Horticultural Society will try it's very best to keep its gardens at Wisley open, we're told. That's the Blitz spirit right there!

Seriously, stick it up your arse. The M1's been shut 3-4 times a year at weekends for what seems like the past decade as the never ending widening /roadworks / smart motorway upgrades / barrier upgrades progress at a snail's pace. No national news coverage for that though. No vox pops from the people of Woburn or Toddingdon. Barely a peep outside of the local news.

People without cruise control and limited understanding of speed limits. Intensely annoying when I'm in the mesitermobile bimbelling along at the limit and makes me want to spec adaptive cruise control next time.

Slightly related, but the amount of middle/outside lane hogging at below the speed limit is now ridiculous.

Its markedly worse at quiettimes, going round the M25 last night most of the cars were just sitting in the two outside lanes but well below 70. I think people are now that lazy, not only can they not be arsed to occasionally have to overtake a lorry in the inside lane, they now can’t even be bothered to overtake the occasional overtaking lorry in the next lane either, so just sit on the two outside lanes at 64mph so they never have to change lane for the entirety of their journey.

(I’m sure this happens on other motorways too, for anyone reading not in London)

If the outside two lanes are going at 64 mph it becomes a problem to move inside because you are either soon about to undertake or waiting to pull out again because you’ve reached a lorry in front doing 60.

You then can’t move out because the car that was behind you has closed the gap. Hence, people only move in when there is clear space a long way ahead in lanes one and two (of a four). And that’s not often between 8am and 7pm on the M25.

Easy fix, sit in the inside lane at 60, saving fuel and stress.

That is the usual plan, with the odd trip into lane 2 to pass the really slow stuff. Those people who can blast along at 70+ must have more money than me.

It’s not that the entire two outside lanes are doing 64mph, just that there are number of individual drivers who sit in the outside lane doing below the speed limit. It’s purely because they don’t want to ever have to change lane, out of pure laziness.

I'm not convinced it's laziness. More like incompetence. So many people just don't understand the basic way fast roads like motorways or dual carriageways work.

Incompetence and/or nervousness. In either case, stay off the motorway if you can't use it properly.

Oh, and don't forget, the outside lane is for german cars and their prey.

TBF on many motorways now it's actually quite difficult to use a motorway the way it's intended due to the sheer volumes. If you correctly move in and out of lanes as was intended, in many cases you would constantly be changing lanes for your whole duration on the motorway. I can see why drivers are lazy and just can't be bothered and so just sit there in the fast or middle lanes. Not me of course....

No excuse for doing it at night, though, when traffic is light.

No agreed, but maybe drivers just get into the habit based on what they do during the day ? Just hypothesising...
Does anyone ever dare use cruise control these days ? I used to use it a fair bit but not for years and years. It got to the stage when the only time the roads were really clear enough to use it was late at night, just when I was ready to drop off to sleep at the wheel !

  21. UEA_Hornet

As in normal cruise control? Sure. I use it on the A14 in the rush and that's mega busy. My other car has adaptative cruise which reads the road signs and I use that all the time, even heading into town at times.

Don’t you find you’re constantly having to manually override as you approach slower vehicles to avoid cruising into the back of them ?

    UEA_Hornet First Team Captain

With the normal one yeah, though largely do it without thinking. Or rather I don't think about it any more than changing gear or whatever else comes naturally after long enough driving. Obviously the adaptive one does it all itself. I just tell it what gap to maintain and what the top end limit is (as I'll typically add on 10% on faster roads).

If you use cruise control, does it free you up to use an air fryer at the same time?

You need a cruise air fryer. Switch it in and you can just leave it while you drive.

I use CC all the time, mainly because it saves fuel and helps me avoid speeding.

  29. The undeniable truth

The undeniable truth First Team Captain

Is it correct that it saves fuel ? I thought I read that it is less fuel efficient as it is constantly breaking and accelerating to keep you at exactly your target speed ? Maybe I dreamt it.
The speeding point is very valid. I used to use it a lot and set for say 75mph but it got to the point where i was having to intervene every 30 secs or so. Interesting to see others don't find that to be the case.

The way I use it, it definitely seems to. Staying at a relatively constant cruising speed boosts my MPG. Of course, if I were to manually accelerate more slowly and then remain at a constant speed at low revs, I'd save as much/more, but human error and all that.
