Loving this new tactic of smash the ball into the box and hope it somehow finds its way onto someones hand. Really great for the spectator

Another farcical handball penalty against Spurs. Why bother actually trying to score anymore? Surely all you’ve got to do is what Andy Carol did, try and knock the ball into a defenders arm and eventually you’ll get a pen.

Thing is, when a terrible decision goes against you without VAR, you can at least rationalise that the referee saw it wrong, had a bad angle or missed a detail, but when decisions are given against you after VAR review, there's just no excuse.

And he even consulted the monitor. All people want is common sense to prevail, yet even after giving himself the opportunity to use any that he might have, he still didn’t.

I’m far from a Spurs fan, but just watching that decision enraged me. Farcical stuff, and it’s reminded me how nice it’s been not having our games dominated by VAR. The rule is absolutely broken if what happened here, and yesterday with Palace is a penalty.

Horrific decision to give handball, compounded by the fact a Newcastle defender did similar a few minutes before, but actually facing the attacker as he blocked the cross, but I assume it wasn’t looked at.

    What a joke.

I didn't see it (I don't watch non-Watford football) but heard it hit Dier who was looking the other way and had no idea what happened.

Sounds like a savagely bad decision.

It’s crazy that handball of any description pretty much now means penalty. It’s now genuinely easier to get a pen from a handball than it is to score a goal, which is a crazy position to have got the game into. Newcastle had no hope of scoring from open play, they just played for a handball Instead, mental.

It was as you described, Dier had his back to AC who headers it down onto the back of his arm. They checked for offside then presumably suggested the ref check the monitor as he did, but he still gave it.

I don't think the ref had any choice other than to give the pen once he saw the ball strike Dyer's arm, which was away from his body. It's the new rules/guidelines that are the problem. It no longer matters if it's an accident.

I don't think the ref give these penalties originally but VAR then tells them to give it .

Be like hockey and the feet rule now.

Karma for all the iffy decisions we've suffered against Spurs.
This will continue as long as that weasel Mike Riley is in charge.

Good point. After the Alli goal, I won't be shedding any tears for them.

Watched a couple of PL games this weekend and both the Everton penalty yesterday and the Spurs one are absolute nonsense.

For Everton’s knockdown yesterday, Richarlison would have been offside for starts had he received the ball, so FK should have gone Palace’s way. Not only that but I thought that was incredibly harsh on Ward.

As for Spurs... well if that has been deemed to have travelled sufficient distance then I’ll eat my hat. Not only that but Dier is jumping and facing the opposite direction. Absolute farce. Spurs should have been out of sight first half, and whilst they didn’t take their chances, they have been robbed. If these are the decisions that VAR want to keep making then good riddance to the PL from our point of view for the time being and hope the sort their $hit out before we’re back.

Really hacked me off on my Sunday afternoon and I don’t have any allegiance to either team. Embarrassing.

I’m not missing the PL one bit. I want Watford to compete at the highest level but i hope if we do go back up, the owners don’t buy a load of old crap again. I’m really enjoying this much younger, energetic Watford side

Loved Pep moaning that Leicester weren’t interested in playing. Just the 5 goals away from home and they are spoiling the game eh Pep?

They'll probably ditch the new penalty guidelines next season when they realise what a pigs ear they've made of things.

We picked a good time to take a year's sabbatical from the Premier League.

Saw a lot of it at the World Cup, I'm surprised it's taken club teams so long to cotton on to it. Anyway, Will Hughes aired his views on social media about the whole palaver, best stay away from the league with VAR for now then, eh William?

Same Hughes (and others) who would have been screaming blue murder for that to be given as was probably Steve Bruce at the time ?

Pep is probably gutted he couldn't blame VAR so blaming Leicester instead.

    Buy some decent defenders ..

Last year the FA/Premier League were able to set their own VAR rules and used that to negate a lot of the effect of the new handball law. There wasn't a great deal to cotton on to. FIFA didn't like that approach and took over running VAR in the summer. It's left the PL refs with no where to hide and they've no choice but to enforce the law now.

To be fair to Bruce he said it was a farce and that the managers had to get together and go to the premier league to get them to do something about it. He may have been appealing at the time but was the first to admit its a ridiculous situation.

But you've got to love it though. For years, these ****** managers have been moaning about handballs not being given and the moment that it's decided that **** it, handball is handball, they all complain anyway and all the moron pundits are up in arms about it.

Proof positive that any change in the PL will upset at least one 'big 6' manager and lead to sickening levels of sanctimony from idiots like Steve Bruce.

We really need to eradicate diving and 'drawing a foul'/'buying a decision' from the game too.

Man City have gone downhill since a certain man called Arteta became Arsenal manager, could he have been the real force behind City?

  34. wfc4ever

Yes that is a fair point and he was honest but not sure everyone would be!

Like UEA says they seem to be following FIFA directives and now we are going to end up with penalties each game.

Seems like they have corrected one issues with the attacking handball but created another!!

  35. MIlton Dammers

Could be. I suspect though it has more to do with the decline & then departure of Kompany & Silva. They were the heart of that side, and they've not been adequately replaced.
