    What I wanted

    Brentford vs Barnsley
    Swansea vs Bmuff

    Barnsley vs Swansea finals

    Swansea go up.

Now that’s not going to happen.

I hope it’s a Brentford vs Barnsley final with Barnsley going up.

What I think will happen though

    Bmuff vs Swansea final

    Bmuff go up.

I'd forgotten how much fun the Championship is. Such a pity we didn't get to enjoy some memorable moments in the flesh. Back to Lineker and VAR

Its the only thing that is ruining my enjoyment of promotion.

I dont even watch MoTD, but just the knowledge that every Saturday he is there stealing a living is enough to make my blood boil.

Why? They had just survived relegation in a season which was more stressful than most. It went to the wire. Why shouldn’t they celebrate, out of relief if nothing else? I would expect any team to do the same.

Suppose because if Shef Wed hadn't been docked points they would have gone down. If it was a level playing field they were among the 3 worst teams in the division, and they couldn't even win their game, they had to rely on Cardiff to bail them out. I think I read that was their first point in 6 or 7 games, they were expected to do much better this season and had a terrible season despite surviving by the skin of their teeth. Shame Wycombe had such a poor start, almost pulled off one of the great late escapes.

Wycombe and Rotherham had some really rough decisions against them they can point at.

Just a couple of weeks ago I was still petrified at the idea that in-form Bournemouth could still pip us to second.

The season’s over and we finished 14 points ahead of them.

We won’t play them again for at least 5 years.

    Funny old game.

I agree with everything above but don’t see its relevance in relation to Derby players spontaneously celebrating their escape at the end of their match. I’m sure when the dust settles they will all be reflecting on what was actually a terrible season for the club.
I would have liked Wycombe or Rotherham to escape the drop. Not as fussed about Sheffield Wednesday because there is an argument to say that they should have had their points deduction last season and thus gone down instead of Wigan, whose fans and players I felt really sorry for last year.

True, but think ahead to the exciting promotion bid the season after next. Hopefully in a better shape financially and able to watch from within the stadium.

TBF a lot of people and pundits said that because for Derby just staying up (had to be a Mike Dean penalty involved somewhere .) isn’t really a cause for celebration but I guess it was that instant sense of relief and emotional moment of “achievement”

And slightly strange that’s the post you both pick up on hours after the event. A short post made while events were happening live… it was hardly intended as a well thought out argument I expected to have to defend!

But, by overwhelming popular demand, here goes:

Objectively I understand why teams celebrate avoiding relegation. We’ve been there enough. But I think Derby’s was about the most tepid, pathetic type of survival going - they should never have been there in the first place, their season was a massive failure for a club of their size, squad and ambitions and they survived mainly because a player 150 miles away scored a last minute goal and another team had a points deduction. They didn’t even win the game yesterday. The way they were charging around the pitch at full time was more boisterous than half our team on winning promotion. Waghorn looked like he’d just won the Champions League. I was half expecting champagne and Sky Bet branded ‘We Scraped to Survival’ banners to appear.

I wasn't expecting you to defend it.

But you say that you made a post when it was "live", by way of explanation, yet you found it embarrassing that players were celebrating starting next season in the Championship, instead of League One.

    Merely an observation, no biggie.

I didn't even know Derby were still in the Championship, thought they'd been replaced midseason by some team called Wayne Rooney's Derby.

There’s something about those clubs’ points deductions I don’t get. Many Wednesday fans are blaming Garry Monk for their relegation, one of the reasons being they had such a poor second half of last season their points deduction was carried into this season otherwise they would’ve been relegated. So how come Wigan’s deduction wasn’t carried into this season as well? Can anyone explain this?

True, but I think it’s been shown over the years how important current form is going into the play-offs. For instance, we were flying in ‘99 but stinking the place out in ‘08 and look what happened. For that reason I would favour Brentford or Barnsley.

Tbh the only team at the bottom with any form was Wycombe !

Shows how bad we were against them that even Derby beat Luton .

I would characterise Coventry's, and perhaps Birmingham's, end of season form as more of a great escape. Both looked in deep trouble just a couple of months ago.

Derby stumbled over the line thanks to Rotherham having a nightmare fixture congestion and Sheffield Wednesday having a points deduction and poor mid season form.

I can understand the relief, and perhaps some celebrations, but they should be embarrassed to still be in the league after this season imho.

I get the relief, but I certainly wouldn't be celebrating if I were Derby, they literally had to rely on two clubs' misfortunes and even then they were a few minutes away from relegation. Heard they might be in for a points deduction next season, so they might be royally ****ed anyway

Yeah, that's the joke - that's why they titled their post with 'the great escape', which I ported over here.

Delighted to see the back of the Championship squad numbers and letters. Absolutely awful. Might be able to read a players name and squad number on the back of their shirt again next season.

Good to see Oxford get into the League 1 play-offs on the last day, hopefully they can make amends for last season’s play-off defeat and take Wycombe’s place. I can imagine they would fare much better than them in the Championship, as indeed they would have had they gone up last season.

I don't think it can be explained.
As the points reduction was reduced for SW during this season it may be they had an appeal outstanding? Otherwise I've no idea. Also don't know how Forest got away with no points reduction last season.
