'The 1881': Good or bad name?, Good idea? Any objections? Discuss

Please discuss if you have any ideas for this supporters group that will hopefully be loud and proud next season. Also, please discuss if you have any objections to 'The 1881'. Please don't just talk about the name though. Do you think other supporters will encourage the singers or is Vicarage Road too quiet to get going?

Please note that this thread is also in the '1881' sub forum.

Bit of a random choice, why that year and not any other?

    Is it like Levis 501's?

Isn't there a thread already for this and, in fact, a whole sub forum?

Showing your ignorance mate. Boer war ended then and the founders are mostly veterans of that conflict.

I think the name ticks so many boxes for all the right reasons. An excellent choice

It's so weirdly incongruous, much like singing at watford games.

I don't know if we're gonna use this as a discussion thread but I think an FAQ thread would probably make everyone's lives a bit easier, particularly Hollywood who no doubt keeps getting the same questions asked of him.

I like the name, but we should not use it!!!

Please see the Official Site and check out The Hospitality Seasonal Packages, click on it and scroll down to the related article dated 29th April 2013 and you will see why we should not use it IMO!!!

Think the name "1881" is a good name, not really any other that wont sound too cheesy.

That's an article about the The 1881 Club, an executive package the club are offering for next season - why should that stop fans using 1881?

There's no chance of the two being confused!

It is a great idea if you can get enough singers. Palace had a small section of singers at Wembley and it did make a difference.

I would spend less time worrying about the name, and more about how it would work in practice. I reckon it would have to be in the Rookery, and towards the back so the apparent "middle class" fans don't complain. I would be more than happy to join as I love that part of the ground.

Agreed with him, ever since coming to Watford all I remember is sitting in the Rookery.

and I also agree with VoR re. the name 1881.

In all honesty it would look great on t-shirts, banners and whatever other merchandise you can think of but.. what relevance does it have to a newly formed supporters collective?
It's relevant to Watford FC as the club was formed in 1881. This group was not.
As was jokingly pointed out in another thread, is it open to only 1881 members? No.

The reason supporters groups call themselves Fanatics is because it's exactly what they are, fanatical about the club. They're fans and the name, for example, Holmsdale Fanatics tells you exactly what they are.
I realise Hollywood said the club wouldn't recognise a group named with Fanatics in it but seriously, 1881? It has no identity to a group of fanatical supporters at all in my opinion.

So have 1881 on a huge banner and on t-shirts etc. but I don't think it works or gives an identity to what you're trying to create.

As for the group itself, great idea and well done in trying to get people from outside of the forum to join in.

Would it be possible to get the club to write/e-mail all those on their database with some information about what you're trying to do?
Try and spread your net as far as possible.

    Good luck.

I think 1881 will work well as a name as long as it's not very prominant. Banners, flags, promo material etc should concentrate on Watford, The Hornets, Golden Boys etc else we could be seen as cliquey.

The bingo players amongst us Watford fans (and there's probably quite a few!) may think 1881 refers to two fat ladies and a spread pair of legs (and there's quite a few of those in the Lower Rous too, I'd wager).

  26. GoingDown

    GoingDown "The Stability"

Just doesn't say anything in my opinion. The 1881. Any opposition fans will be, 'what'? And if it doesn't matter what they think then why does it need a name?

It's a collective of 'want to sing' supporters, right? So surely that should be signified in the name? If this is simply about creating a 'brand', ie, printing '1881' over loads of flags and other promo material - then frankly, it's already missing the point - in my opinion.

If its about history, start thinking Harry Grover. Harry's Choir would have double significance in that regard. Tongue in cheek and would probably get that drum wielding mascot of ours heavily involved in what they do. 'The Brewers' would equally hit the mark in terms of historical significance.

I think 1881 is a great idea however I can easily see it petering out and not working if not carried out successfully. An area at the edge of the rookery is easy to set up and wont disturb many however it will be isolated and therefore defeat the objective like the yellow order was. The vicarage road end should be used whatever the cost as it forces people to move there specifically if they want to sing and can be unreserved and will get the entire of that stand singing as it is next to away fans. If it is in the rookery many people I have spoken to have said they won't move from their current seat in the rookery as they 'can't see the point' and therefore sadly I can only see this working if its in the vicarage road end.

    1) Move the season tickets in the corner of the rous along as far as they can; it means they've benefitted from the move by getting closer to the centre circle. There can't be that many season ticket holders there to move? They may not even have to as the lower rous isn't known for it's offensive nature so the family zone could just be built around the current holders/those who wish not to move.

    2) Make the corner of the lower rous closer to the Rookery the 'family zone' (the other side would also do, but the family section further away from the singers is probably preferential). I can't see any objection from people who move there as the view is better, the facilities are better, they still get the families section (if not more so as they're not next to the Northern monkeys spitting at them). Obviously if they want to remain in the vic stand because of some other reason they may, but they should be made aware of the 'new purpose'. And/or, offer the current seat locations of those relocating to the singing zone to those who want to remain behind a goal. Make sure they know it's temporary and the 'family area' will have it's own place either in the new stand or better located in the lower rous.

    3) Make the Vic end known/marketed as the 'singing end' so people who are there know what they're buying into, and so any complaints about standing/noise are ridiculous and unfounded.

If you make it so people who don't want to be part of the singing section still benefit there'll be less dissenting voices.

Personally would concentrate on getting the singing singers congregated in one area first then worry about the name.

lol - along with numerous suggestions for songs which will never ever be sung! In that case I vote against 1881...2992 is more pleasing on the eye.

I agree, the VR end would be the best way to go. Most grounds I've been to that have a good atmosphere are the ones where the vocal home support is next to the away fans. WBA and Leicester are good examples.

    Now, I'm confused by all the similar threads on the same subject, so I'm copying an earlier reply I gave elesewhere;

"I would seem to be in the tiny minority here, but I don't like 1881. It has it's good points and would be a good name for some type 'club', but not for what is meant to be an all inclusive get-together in a particular part of the ground for a fanatical sing-song.

The 1881 just seems to 'exclusive' to me and it is a long name to actually speak.

Personally, I think it should be short to say, simpler, and more 'geographical', such as The Hive or as I suggested at the beginning, "The Nest" as we are the Hornets (not bees) and a collection of Hornets is called a Nest. It's an obvious link for Watford and everyone would know it's relevance. To be honest I don't even think that 1881 is relevant anyway.

Both the Hive and Nest create a sense of busy activity which is what we want. Also both could be portable, moving to different parts of the ground as required and to away matches, without losing its identity.

But, for me The Nest is best!

    But what do I know?"
