No the N word is a euphanism of Negro... a Negro is anyone of african decent and is actually the word for black in spanish but was adopted by the english language in the late 1800's i believe, however the connection to the slave trade is there as it was that that caused it to be adopted.

Around 1442, the Portuguese began to enslave Africans in Portugal. The term negro, literally "black", was used by the Spanish and Portuguese to refer to dark-skinned people, especially indigenous Africans.

From the 18th century to the mid-20th century, "negro" (later capitalized) was considered the correct and proper English word for slaves and freed slaves of sub-Saharan African origin. It fell out of favor by the 1970s in the United States. In current English language usage, "Negro" generally is considered acceptable in a historical context or in the name of older organizations, as in the United Negro College Fund, and is used more commonly by those born before the post World War II baby boom.

Lyndon B. Johnson was the last American president to publicly refer to the African American population as Negroes, which, for much of his life, he pronounced "nig-ruhs", widely considered an insult by African Americans. Johnson learned, while running for president, to use a more generally acceptable pronunciation of the word and before he left office, he had begun to employ the word blacks, too.

The related word Negroid was used by 19th and 20th century anthropologists (ending variously in the mid-to-late 20th century) to refer to a race from some parts of Africa.

A specifically female form of the word—negress (sometimes capitalized) —was sometimes used; but, like another gender-specific word "Jewess", it has all but completely fallen from use. (An exception is its extremely unusual use in the titles of paintings, drawings[1] and sculptures,[2] largely as an allusion to the formerly common occurrence of the word in such titles, but such usage has dropped off dramatically.) Both are considered racist and sexist, although as with other racial, ethnic, and sexual words that are seen as pejoratives, some individuals have tried "reclaiming" the word. An example of this is artist Kara Walker. [3]

Sometimes African Americans use a variant of the term "negro" playfully among themselves (as in, "wassup negro!"), especially throughout the American South and other areas with a high percentage of African Americans. When used in such a manner, it is often in jest with the word pronounced, in an exaggerated fashion. Although this usage is similar to that of the word nigga, it generally is not considered offensive.

    Arse
    From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Arse and Ass are coarse words for the buttocks or ****. Arse in English was first recorded circa 1400 (in arce-hoole) and is commonly used in Commonwealth countries such as Britain, Canada, Australia and New Zealand, some former parts of the British Empire and Ireland. In the United States and parts of Canada ass is used (both spoken and in writing) instead.

I've read this thread long enough now, i don't post that much but......Is it me or is it as simple as this?......if someone expresses that they find a word offensive thats good enough reason to stop using it? If you have to take the word '****' out of your range of words and maybe even add a few letters to say Pakistani is it gonna really change your life for the worse?....no it isn't.
Its one word from thousands but for some strange reason you want to fight for your right to say it (in context or not). Do you not find it strange that theres tons of words available to you and yet you never use them but your arguing to use a word that some people don't like and find offensive? Theres thousands of words in the English language and yet you want to hold on to this one....whats that all about? i'd like to also add that although people on this thread have said otherwise, and i have no way of proveing it, I'm pretty sure anyone who uses the word '****' has never double checked with the person thay are aiming it at that they or their perants are from Pakistan........if your telling me that you have talked with a conveniance store (corner shop) owner in depth about their background and family tree before saying '**** shop' then i say your a liar. (funny how you never hear someone saying indian shop isn't it?) I really want to join in on these boards but when reading some comments i really do wonder sometimes.....am i on my own in my thoughts?

You aren't wrong in what you say to the most part, however TBH this wasnt an argument as much as a discussion pointing out to some that didnt realise that the word is in fact a racist slur.
Unfortunately it seems that some think that it is a word that has been accepted into modern life, which I am sure you know, it hasnt been.
I would like to point out that this thread has been run very well and the people involved in it have conducted themselves in a good manner which is one thing i always found sadly lacking on the OMB.
I would also add that what you say at the start of your post is very true.. "if someone expresses that they find a word offensive thats good enough reason to stop using it?" this is a friendly site the likes of which i have failed to find to such a degree in the past and to keep it as such the mods and admin (with the help of his large stick) have done a fantastic job in keeping a nice place for all to visit... which has been a little trying at times i can tell you ;)
The steam room was set up, however, for quite this sort of thing... to give people a place to come and discuss things like this if nothing more to validate their view on it or get a voice on why their viewpoint could be wrong in order to perhaps change the way they see/use things.

Very well said, it seems some people think that if we stop using then somebody (presumably the pakistanis) has got one over on us. It's not neccessary to sue it or argue for the right to use it as some people DO and WILL find it offensive.

If you really have read this thread then you will have seen that many people have said exactly the same as you already and therefore you are not alone in your thoughts. I don't know how you would come to the conclusion you have if you have read all the posts properly.
