Some of them are terms of endearment. The rest aren't ,so you shouldn't use them if they are meant to be offensive.

    Perception is a funny thing.
What is acceptable to one is offensive to another.

It depends on who you are speaking to and what their interpretation of the words are. If you are unsure as to how they would react when called a (insert name here) then don't call them it.

Agreed, but on a forum who know's what person lies behind a screen-name. It's far easier to hazard a good guess at to what would offend someone face to face, but in here I could be black, white or yellow, muslim or jewish.

honeslt **** is another way of getting sympathy classic example how it didn't used to be used in a offensive manner "go down the ****'s to get some sweets" or another word which is still used in an offensive way and a non-offensive way 1."you slit eye chink" 2. "go to the chinkys for some food"

I fail to see from a chinese person's point of view where the non offensive bit is.

afanof leave it out, it's only a message board not english class!

chez i agree totally i know a pakistani that lets people call him **** and have had a argument with a pakistani about this before and acutally made him see that i was not been a racist, i very rarely use the word **** as i do know it causes disruption and arguments.

wfchornet2 when you say about them taking this as offence do you honestly mean if i were to stand outside a corner shop, ran by a pakistani, and a friend ask me what i was doing, if i shouted back "just going in the ****'s to get some food" they would be offended, surely not as i know a pakistani who calls corner shops; **** shops and then when i got a box of dud matchs he said "thats what you get when you buy matches from a **** shop"

p.s hehe if this was on the other board it would of been a internet riot with people getting banned all over the place, nice one mods and admins letting it play out;D

While discussions are allowed and encouraged, lines do have to be drawn, Crazy legs and others you may not feel that it is offensive but a lot of others do.

Therefore can you please refrain from using it in anyway that could be deemed to be offensive.

    Thanks

nah nah hold up faith! it has been used in this whole debate and suddenly it has got into a few pages and it's offensive we are not using it in an offensive or non offensive manner we are using it to prove points

I know that, I wasn't having a go at all, that is why I said please don't use it in an offensive way from now on - I didn't say you were using it in a offensive way then.

I was just summarising the thread saying I can see where you guys are coming from but some people do not like so in the future please try not to use it where it could taken as offensively that is all. It was no comment on your previous post.

As DJ says the easiest thing is to avoid saying something that people might think are offensive, at least until you get into a forum that is not so much in the public eye.

True, djstation i know indian lads who if a white person were to call them **** they would batter them but if another indian did it they would be all jokey about it! it frustrates me because i am not racist at all anybody who knows me will tell you i am many things but one i am not is racist i admit to laughing at some offensive jokes but not even about indians it could be about english welse irish american canadian african if i think its funn i will laugh, so the reason it frustrates me is i have been slapped about by pakistanis before for singing "ing-er-land" outside a pub in st.albans before, i was standing there singing they come up and go "so what blud you don't like muslims then?" i was like what the fcuk are you on about and got a minor kicking for it, i laughed when they then asked me for a *** when i established i was not a racist to em

once again i agree, i kind of know, but more just see him in the pub all the time, black fella who came over here 20 years ago, before i was born, he loves it here and always has but one thing he hates is the immigrants who come over and sponge off the government, he can also be quite a racist, but is a very nice bloke.

also from my point of view the most racist race in this country alone is the asian youth! they call us snow man and say respect them but what is there to respect when they show no respect for, to be honest, the race that is trying hardest to keep there families out in them poor third world countries alive. i am no sayin it is all of them because that would be racist but it is just a majority rather than a minority making the whole race look bad which really is a shame

I haven't corrected anyone's English, I made a reference to a member of the Royal Family who notoriously called the Chinese 'slitty-eyed' while on a state visit.

As you've brought the subject up, you didn't understand my post, nor did you understand what Faith clearly meant in her post. At least the people you wish to denegrate have managed to learn a second language while some people can't understand one. :(

Apologies, I thought you meant 'chinkies' was acceptable.
You have hit the nail on the head there. These words are being used thoughtlessly rather than maliciously. We are probably all agreed that if a word is likely to offend then it is best not to use it. Nothing to do with PC, just respect for others, whatever their background.

we get a lot of this sort of thing at school. the thing that annoys me is people of the own race call each other racist words!!!

so pakistanis call fellow pakistanis p4ki's. but, i if was i was to call someone at school that name, them i will be excluded and most proberbly beaten up aswell.

i dont mind (and get along with) people from any religion, background and culture, but when people, of any of the above dont have the respect, thats what i cant stand.

but thats another story for another day :p

i know a little indian fella called Jaffor, he does not mind this stuff if it is not in a malicious manner, he sat there in my college did his countries flag and started saying look at this beautiful flag you white son of a *****(in a joking way) we were playfighting and throwing insults at each othrer for 15 minute until one of the other indians caught wind and started getting really pissed off with me!

just shows all people interprate things differantly and i understand this and do not use the word **** because most do find it offensive, this isn't to say i think it's offensive because i do not at all i think it is a way of calling a pakistani by his countrys name, IF USED IN THE RIGHT CONTEXT AND MANNER!

  33. wfchornet2

It is not unusual for people of certain races to call people of their own race by our slang terminology... i have a few afro/carribean aquantances and they all call each other "n1gg3r" however i know for a fact if i was to call any of them that they would take offence... just because a pakistani calls another pakistani friend a P4ki it doenst mean that it is acceptable for a white person to call it.. one pakistani calling it to another pakistani is obviously not able to use it as a racist slur being that they are of the same race and would therefore be slurring himself at the same time.

I would like to add that i am very impressed with how this thread has panned out... there are a few differing views on it and it hasnt degenerated into a slanging match.. pat yourselves on the back.
If things stay like this makes our job easier moderating it!!

But doesn't "The N Word" mean a slave? Which in context is offensive to them. However "****" is apparently offensive because some people meant it to be back in the old days.

Still is a bit stupid i think. It would be easier to understand if the word had a direct meaning etc.
