There’s some truth in that, yes. But I tend to agree with others that Macintyre wasn’t being especially ostentatious. It’s not like he was driving a Maserati while dressed in ermine and wearing a crown.

Besides, the assumption that he was robbed by people motivated to do so by poverty would also require some proof (as Burnsy suggests).

I'm not sure he's the monster you make him out to be, a few years ago he cancelled a show shortly before it started when he found out it was for a debt collection company. He'd reportedly been in £40k debt before his break-through and didn't feel that morally it was the right thing to do. https://www.mirror.co.uk/3am/celebrity-news/comic-michael-mcintyre-refuses-to-perform-435170

He's also raised a lot of money for charities like GOSH (£1M from one show). If you're going to support this kind of crime, there are much more deserving victims than him.

Marvellous. Because Clive is potless it is insensitive for anyone to purchase any luxury goods. (Not that he is potless of course, he’s just an online fabricated persona!)

Jumbo - When I say 'and others like me' and 'us' it's because I'm not just referring to myself.

What I earn is in line with, or even marginally more, than what most humble people (of my acquaintance anyway) are making.

    Misquoted me. Read it again.

To wear a £15K watch on a school run is asking for trouble.

But there are people who earn what Clive does, millions of them, so why not Clive?

I'd scan and post my P60 on here if I didn't think they'd just say I'd fabricated it.

My gross earnings last year: £12,149

Cif's gross earnings last year: £0.00

The expression 'cheek by jowl' is often used about London. MM no doubt passed some grinding poverty on his way to posho school in Hampstead. The analogy isn't far off for me.

It's interesting that there is disbelief that Clive earns what he does. 'But he's articulate, sometimes even funny! No one like that struggles in modern Britain'. Poor people should be a bit other, either undeserving or wildly exotic. It's almost impossible to consider that they may be quite normal and living within 400m of Michael McIntyre.

The problem is, that these sorts of arguments, and the claim by Diamond above that he was “asking for trouble” tend to shift the blame away from the perpetrators and onto someone who has done nothing wrong, save for being a bit ostentatious.

If we “expect” someone to be robbed in broad daylight while picking up their kids then, frankly, something has gone quite badly wrong with our society. Or our policing. Or both.

Once we’ve sorted that, then we can go and sort out the guff that BBC put out in the name of ‘comedy’ and redress the balance.

I’ve got a 4k watch. Should I not wear that when dropping the kids off? Do I need to go and buy a school run watch for my own safety? I’ve only got one watch so I better go and get a £200 one as well so I don’t look like a d*** :(

Meh. I should still be able to buy shiny things without balaclava wearing hoodlums thinking they are entitled to have a pop.

Both that and MM are unfathomably popular, though, to be fair to the BBC.

Because he’s an amusing if repetitive troll deliberately winding people up. In my opinion. This forum is so weird these days I wouldn’t be surprised if the big reveal was that he was the same bloke that invented Highgrade.

Except the gap is larger in almost every measurable way. Comparing poverty in this country to poverty in the third world is ludicrous.

I actually feel sorry for you. You spent 4K on something most people can’t be arsed to wear these days.

I’m sure you have plenty of money, but it seems to me poor return for the cash.

But to answer the question, £200 is a lot for a watch and a lot of money to a crack addict. I would go lower.

In this country plenty of kids miss meals, girls can’t afford sanitary products, plenty live in squalid and cramped accommodation etc. So what’s your point? That you aren’t tripping over bodies on the way to the Hammersmith Apollo?

At lunchtime today I saw a fat woman having a piss in the street and a couple of do as you likeys stealing sandwiches and shouting abuse at the staff in Wenzels by Colindale station.

I don't think it's entirely relevant to the thread, but I wanted to tell someone.

My personal opinion is just that and this is a public forum. You need thicker skin Jumbo. If one of my mates turned up for a night out with a £4K watch on I'd call him a right d***.

    Your choice, my opinion.

My point was self evident. Poverty in this country is nothing like poverty in the third world. Kids aren't working in sweatshops in this country, or walking miles for clean water.

We have a hidden poverty in this country that many who suffer from it are too embarrassed to speak of or their voices are simply ignored. Food banks and the like, while noble in their cause, are such disgusting blots on our record as a country. They simply should not have to exist.

That being said, they do exist so people don’t die of hunger or thirst. The NHS exists so people don’t die of curable or innocuous illnesses.

We have some horrific things going on in our own backyard. But let’s not liken them on a similar scale to the third world. Both exist.

And it’s not really relevant to the discussion anyway!
