Maybe Watford hoped to conclude negotiations so had to book the medical staff/facilities today just in case they were needed, but things didn’t go as planned. Or maybe they have and Cooper just didn’t want to say too much. I remain hopeful we’ll have some positive news today/tomorrow, even if it’s just Grimes not starting in their game.
It sounds like we thought we could get Grimes on the cheap, and once we realised it would require a £10m+ bid, have decided not to pursue. Hope I’m proved wrong
No problem with a ‘glass half full’ outlook. I just think it’s more likely that we asked the price, got told the price, Swansea have not heard from us again and the medical thing was a red herring. I suspect it’s gone as far as he’s just on a list of targets we are enquiring about. Same with Busquets and probably a few others we don’t know about.
I think he would absolutely be a good signing, but if he is going to cost upwards of £10m and want a decent wage bump would it be good business? Obviously yes if he contributes to promotion, but if he doesn't he is a pretty expensive acquisition with fairly limited resale value. Capoue's contract would cost us about £5m over the next two years and he is leagues better than Grimes if we can convince him to stay and keep him motivated. I guess the thought with Busquets is that he can be potentially signed for less and then re-sold for more, which may be a more sensible option if we can hang onto Capoue.
Every window. Every single time. Linked to a number of decent signings. End up with Glenn Murray, 2 X Udinese fringe nobodies and some other piles of crap. League 1 beckons. #pozzomodel
I never look behind, all the time I will wait forever, always looking straight Thinking, counting, all the hours you wait -- Grimes ("oblivion")
I think he will be the difference between us going up or not to be honest, best midfielder in Championship last season and looks ready for the step up to the Prem too.
If Capoue goes I think you may well be right. However, if Capoue stays he is a very expensive addition in an area we already obviously have quality Suspect tomorrow's game will be a bit more illuminating about who is / isn't going to be part of the squad moving forwards.
While this is true, we have suffered in the past when certain players are injured and we don't have anyone similar to come in. Having two players who can do similar jobs is a good sign of depth that we've never really had in areas.
True, but I think we need to be realistic. Grimes isn't going to leave a club where he is captain and played every minute last season to sit on the bench and given we would be lucky to convince Capoue to stay full stop as he is miles too good for this division I just dont think that is a viable option.
Partially agree. Grimes will very likely be getting a big pay-rise if he joined - and he may have the confidence to back himself to force his way in to the side. I doubt he would join insisting he plays every minute. Him joining us even if Capoue stays isn't a worry for me, I think we can accommodate that. But I don't think the player is worth more than £8m really and I suspect Swansea want more than that.
We can't afford to have Capoue and this guy fighting for the same place with finance tight and other areas needing to be covered for others who will leave. Plus I thought Swansea had offered to match our wages to keep him ?
But we don’t even know what formation we are playing? We simply don’t know what we will or won’t need at this point. What I agree on is that we can’t spend £8m+ on someone who won’t play the majority of games. As for the wages, didn’t that come from the same Swansea bloke on twitter who claims to write for The Athletic but doesn’t and has said a number of odd things about him being stripped of the captaincy etc?
He claims to write for The Athletic yet doesn't even follow them. Seems odd. He's also just tweeted that Grimes has turned down the contract offered by Swansea.
I think it’s at this point that we can disregard what he’s saying...if you hadn’t had the sense to do so anyway.
The ever reliable Adam Crawford who works for the Athletico (the knock off version of the athletic), has claimed, (but can’t be 100% sure) Grimes has turned down Swansea’s new contract offer. Obviously with such breaking news from a proper ITK, this deal is as good as done. Move to confirmed mods! https://mobile.twitter.com/adamcraw95/status/1301852979813855232
Can we hurry up and sign this guy as I watched that YouTube video when we were first linked and convinced myself we were going to win the league. As there's been no movement for a couple of days, I'm lurching back towards everything being a disaster.
Would expect this one to drag out for a while. Big sign will be if he's not included in the Swansea squad tomorrow.
I dont disagree that 8 million is a lot for a Championship Club to spend on a squad player, however it could be that the club are forward thinking and feel that they can get a replacement at a good price now as Capoue realistically has one possibly 2 seasons left in him. Having said that I think if we play 4-2-3-1 Caps and Grimes would be ideal as they would provide excellent support for the defence and can both pass well. We could then push Hughes up and use his energy for the press and I think he will show more creativity at Championship level.
Capoue hated football in the Premier League. What makes anyone think he will be up for Tuesday nights away at Rotheram? You're dreaming.
Capoue has been one of our best if not our best player for quite a long time now. Personally I don't think his attitude and willingness has been an issue.
Or that he doesn't really watch football and isn't that interested in it generally. Won't be the only one.
