Marco Silva Tapping Up Complaint

You may well be right. But what if there is evidence of serious wrongdoing? History suggests that the EPL/FA do not have the stomach for the months of legal wrangling that would almost certainly follow the imposition of any punishment that would be seriously detrimental to Everton's season

I don't think it's a case of the EPL not having the stomach for a lengthy legal process.
I think they want to avoid their product being shown in a bad light across the world.

A small fine for Everton, probably suspended, and a statement from the club saying they promise to abide by EPL laws in future.

When Liverpool tapped up Van Dijk and Southampton kicked up a fuss, Liverpool apologised profusely and said they'd leave the player alone.
Then he ended up at Anfield anyway. But it looked good with apologies and a complete lack of lawyers present.

    I agree with this.

The main thing the pozzos should want to get out of it is the assurance that they are protected by such advances in future.
This should be an important issue for about 12 other teams in the league too.

So are you suggesting rather than keep pushing the issue and making the PL/FA realise they should take it seriously in this instance and in the future, that we should do nothing because of the fear that the punishment won’t fit the crime?

Progress in life is not made by doing that.

I agree with that. But the Liverpool/VVD matter is different in that Liverpool accepted wrongdoing when presented with the evidence by Southampton. They backed off. By doing so, it allowed them to buy VVD a year later. Everton haven’t admitted anything. To the contrary, they deny wrongdoing and allegedly are using our own appointment of Silva as a defence.

In black and white, someone is being stupid. Either it’s WFC by claiming we have overwhelming evidence of clear wrongdoing when we have nothing or something far weaker. Or it’s Everton, who are blindly flying in the face of that overwhelming evidence. What their reasons to do that are, no idea. Seems foolish to me.

One final thing that Everton fans keep bringing up - during mediation, it’s claimed that they offered us a payment which we declined out of hand. Why? I can’t understand that at all. If they are so sure they did nothing wrong, why offer to pay anything at all? Doesn’t matter if it’s £1 or £10m. They are owned by a multi-millionaire and they don’t accumulate wealth by paying people they don’t have to (enter Richarlison fee joke here...). If they offered to pay us anything, that indicates guilt to me.

very interesting to see it written out like that

In that time we were promoted from the hardest league in the world (to get out of) and have maintain our position in the prem. Imagine what we could do with a quality manager that had experience of winning

So when you have an employee at work who starts sulking and being disruptive you reward them? That's not business it's suicide. Football is no different and Everton will find this out with Silva when he throws his first strop! Watford gave Silva time to change things but eventually sacked him without compensation. That's pretty unusual for them but come on wanting to jump ship after 9 games is just plain unprofessional.

I realise the order of things were different in my example.
My point was more the EPL getting the two clubs to seemingly sort it out between themselves rather than handing out penalties & getting lawyers involved.

With Watford's statement today waiving any financial compensation I'm suggesting the EPL will get Everton to apologise retrospectively and promising to bide by EPL laws in the future.

This is only going to end one way.....Marco swimming with the fishes.

Because he gets his coaching license suspended by the EPL and has to take a 6 month sabbatical. Why the hell else would it end that way?

yes....gino its fine I covered it up.

A laudable approach, of course, and part of me applauds Pozzo's stance. But, if the EPL uphold our complaint, what do you really think is going to happen? I'll tell you: Everton will be told that they've been very naughty; they'll say they're very sorry and it won't happen again. Matter closed. It's all very well Pozzo taking on the role of football's moral guardian but, realistically, what's the point?

Yup. I don't disagree. People are dreaming if they think this will result in a multi-million pound fine and/or a points deduction.

It shows people that we aren’t to be taken lightly or be treated similarly again because we are prepared to to take it as far as necessary. For a club like Watford who will live and breathe in this division by buying cheap and selling high, it is important to get word across that we aren’t here to be ripped off or bullied. A moral victory is nice. But I prefer the victory that makes clubs think twice before trying to repeat something similar to us or other clubs our size.

    This.
It's sad because I guess this is our way of saying we can't legally win a case for compensation and want to bring this a close without a completely humiliating climb down. As you say, Everton say sorry, no penalty, or a suspended penalty, and we all move on.

Yes but EFC are a 'massive club' dont you know??? Means they only need to flutter their eyes for us to melt into putty. I just had a little peek at their forums. They are certain that we are pissed off with them because they took our best player!!! OMG they will soon be crying about that one! Quite funny really as although they are a more established premier league club than us they arent even the biggest club in their own city!!!!

  16. Lloyd

    Lloyd Squad Player

But that's the point! The 'punishment' Everton will get (a telling off) won't make anyone think twice about anything! People who seriously think that Sheriff Pozzo and Deputy Duxbury are going to ride in to EPL town and 'drain the swamp' are being naive

The more we push this and shout from the rooftops the more embarrassing it will be when we get no compensation and Everton get no penalty.

Not sure the club have been shouting much from anywhere - isn't today's statement the first official comment on it since Silva was binned?

Fair enough. I think it's a massive waste of time but in the (highly unlikely) event that Everton are fined millions and deducted points I reserve the right to come back on here and say what a great debt of gratitude the world of football owes Watford FC and how I was one of those that always supported Pozzo's brave and principled stance!

Haha! I won’t hold it against you if that happens.

In all seriousness, I would be quite happy with a fine, apology and suspended points deduction. Might not seem like much but given the bulldozer approach that Moshiri takes, I wouldn’t put it past him to fall foul again and see those points disappear.

Of course it will end up only a fine but Watford would have been seen as weak if they had just dropped the matter and other clubs will do it to us again in the future.
When the process is complete and if Everton is found guilty it won't be Watford that is embarressed but the EPL if they just pay lip service to the rules. It will be the EPL that looks weak.

Possibly but today we are shouting from the rooftops. Official statement. Front page of BBC footy page. I'm sure we all realise nothing will come of it. A week ago we as fans were hoping for a £10m windfall. Now the club have accepted we will gain nothing. Everton getting no penalty will be the final embarrassment.

Do you really think we would have let this rumble on this long if we thought we would get nothing ? Do you really think we went into mediation discussions with them asking for nothing? Our legal advisors have clearly just told us we wouldn't win in court and EFC have not offered us anything so we have no option but to climb down and attempt to save face by insisting we weren't looking for compensation.

I don't understand the view that the club shouldn't bother with this issue anymore just because it's unlikely the perpetrator will be punished to the tune of millions or with point deductions.

The institutionalised complacency within the Premier League regarding attitudes towards flagrant violations of the rules that each club signs up for is all the more reason to make a stand. Why wouldn't you want to be on the side of right?

And I'm sure Gino and co aren't attempting to cause significant change to the way other clubs approach things in a general sense - more that they are making it clear that Watford will not be messed about with.

Should we be in a similar position in the future and somebody higher up the food chain decides they want an asset of ours but prefers to take a short cut to get it, by looking at the lengths we went to when Everton tried that could and probably should be enough to convince them otherwise.

Stand our ground now and gain a reputation as a tough customer, or back down and became an easy target for bigger fish. It's a no-brainer.

Don't forget which club is in the wrong. Gino clearly hasn't.

Is there option of a case in civil law if the FA does not follow its own rules to a logical conclusion? We don't know what has been said in private. My guess, based on nothing very much, is that Gino is business savvy enough not to undertake an action that could backfire badly. I do not have the same feeling about Moshiri, again based on little evidence.
