Vlad and the club need to jettison Troy ASAP.

To be fair, saying that he hasn't got a good level of fitness at the moment does not rule out him also not having had a good level of fitness for the past 4 years as well.

What if we pay for the taxi ? If he stays the tent at London Colney will not be enough to contain his constant gassing. The local takeaways will be quaking in fear as well......:p

What a shame. A club legend becomes an unfit albatross around the neck of the club. If he does stick around for the year out of fitness and declining everybody will be delighted to see the back of him. Not his fault but a legend tarnished by yet more awful contract management by the owners.

But if fit and motivated he would be quiet an asset potentially.

And he would be "earning his pay " by playing at least.

    Big IF I know.

Even at full pelt he'd still be a massively expensive drain in championship. He'd be like that lump Birmingham had up front for 2 years on large pay. Was it Zigic?

Giving away Deeney for free would be a huge result for us right now. What a mess.

Yes if we cannot afford him and no one want Gray then guess it's time to move on.

Not sure signing a 37 year old was really the answer but we'll see.

Provided our plan isn't to aimlessly hoof balls at head height, I think that Gray is a better forward than Deeney.

Although it may be easier to find a suitor for Gray than Deeney.

There's nothing stopping him accepting a new contract on Championship level wages, though. If we can't find a buyer and he's happy to not play, whilst milking the club for an unsustainable salary then I'd say that is at least partially his fault. Hopefully he cares about the club as much as he says.

Why on earth would he do that? We gave him the contract and he’s going to retire soon. It’s the fault of whoever offered him the contract not him, but of course they never take any accountability.

Completely unreasonable to expect him to take a big cut.

And has he said he's happy not to play - has anyone?

Anyway if it's like last season and our general medical record on knee injuries Troy will be back with one knee soon!

I mean Chalobah still doesn't look fully fit and Janmaat seems to have had about 6!

Yes and no. Depends if his priority is the survival of the club or his bank balance. He's well within his rights to want the money, it was promised to him, but it contradicts all his big talk.

Well his priority last season certainly wasn’t survival of the club in the premier league, so I could have a fairly good guess.

Well it's not his fault he was picked whilst carrying an injury if that is what you mean..

Not sure you can blame Troy for Pearson not playing *Gray (well he did mess his own chances up with that little party) , Welbeck (although he was injured a lot too) and Pedro (surely wasn't going to rely on a young kid just in the country)

And then there is not so Isaac Success!

I think the issue here is we haven't replaced Deeney very well!

Even now we're relying on Suarez if he stays, a 37 year old, a chap from Udinese with limited game time and Pedro again.

I presume we cannot afford to play Welbeck otherwise he should be in the team.

*It's down to idiots like him as to why we cannot still attend football games etc.

As we discuss the future of one of our hot prospects, I was suddenly struck by curiosity over what happened to one of our former highly rated prospects, Scott Loach.

Having been drafted into the England senior squad in 2010, he's playing for Barnet in the fifth tier in 2020 at the relatively early age (for a keeper) of 32.

Just goes to show you that you never know how players will develop, I suppose.

I don't know whether it comes from Deeney, Giraldi, Pozzo himself, or just that managers are scared to pick someone else because they fear his influence; but the fact he was being picked over Welbeck after lockdown shows there is a problem. If Deeney can play, he plays, irrespective of form / fitness etc.

I think this attitude has extended to recruitment as well. We were never looking at a replacement for Deeney because the assumption was he would start every game. We were always trying to buy a back up or a strike partner.

I suspect Pearson just preferred to play him - but yes if he was injured then surely we should have had other options.

And tbf he did do well under Pearson when the whole team did over Christmas time as Sarr and GD were fit to help him.

As I say Gray probably burnt his bridges by having a party which mean he missed a game and I don't think Pedro was ever going to get the chance he is getting now.

I suspect the big future replacement was Success ...less said the better!

He did reasonably for a while, then was dreadful. His post lockdown performances were utterly abysmal. If Pearson was honestly picking him on what he thought was merit, he never deserves a job again. Every game when Welbeck was subbed on we suddenly looked like a side again but were usually 2-0 down because we had been playing with 10 men.

Don't think a fit and firing Deeney exists at this stage unfortunately. When was the last time he was properly fit for us? Literally the whole of last season he was either on the sidelines or carrying some kind of injury which possibly would have seen him sit games out if Welbeck were fit

Perhaps the reason why Deeney was continually picked was just a culmination of 4 years of him being the undisputed main man, with a load of different types of players, and a load of different types of manager, and no discernable style of play other than hoof it up to the big man (who as it turns out is not that big and couldn't jump towards). I don't want to rehabilitate Wally, he was drab and couldn't even speak English even after supposedly being groomed for the job a year in advance, but he was spot on about Deeney, and that was over 3 years ago. Gray when you play to his strengths is a serviceable Premier League striker, but, as the government may say, only in a specific and limited way

Gray did get a couple of minutes against Newcastle, which was after the party, wasn't it? Actually did an OK job of seeing the game out that day, holding the ball up and what not

Maybe - he did get game time but only as sub - came on at West Ham too.

He might have got a start or two with Deeney being "rested"

No it’s not. What Gray did was idiotic beyond belief - but you’re rather downplaying the virus if you think it’s just people having small gatherings that means fans can’t attend.

And secondly, it is at least partially Deeney’s fault he was picked. He’s admitted he wasn’t fit after the event - so should have been honest with himself and his teammates at the time and said so. His hero complex got the better of him.

Of course not but those sorts of incidents hasn't helped - anyway I just think Pearson and co lost faith in Gray after that.

He'll be a decent Championship striker with the right service hopefully.

The main issue is we haven't had any managers able to replace Deeney or at least have a striker like him to put pressure on which is where someone like Success has blown his chance.

And given Troy like others a silly contract that we appear unable to cut.

Not sure about the second point. All players should be giving their all and trying to get picked. Unless the player is lying to the manager, if a manager picks the wrong player then that’s on them and the owners.

If Deeney downed tools and said that he wasn’t bothering as he wasn’t fit enough, I’m sure many on here still would have blamed him for ou subsequent relegation.

Was Valencia who were supposedly interested in him wasn't it? Naturally we can completely ignore that. There may be other clubs interested, there may not, but at this stage, if €13m+ wasn't enough for Marseille, I doubt there'll be many continental clubs at all who see Suarez as realistic

But he himself admitted in hindsight that he wasn’t fit enough to play?

I don’t see why fans should give excuses for him where he didn’t give them himself. He’s admitted he shouldn’t have played - so he has to take his share of responsibility for the fact that he did. And the club need to own their share of the blame for it too.

In hindsight being the key term.

There’s a difference between looking back and thinking that you weren’t fit enough to be effective, and to tell your manager who keeps picking you and having confidence in you that they’re wrong, have no clue what they’re doing and that you’ve decided to withdraw your availability.

It’s a slippery slope when players tell managers which games they want to play. You want players to want to run through walls for you. The starting 11 decision should lie with the head coach alone, and Pearson ignored the obvious decision of benching Deeney and should be accountable for his decision making.

Let’s hope Ivic is better at picking/ substituting players such as Suarez.
