I remember a quote from Gibbs after the transfer. He said something along the lines of he thought he was going to Watford, it was all set up, but his agent told him there was something not right at the club and he advised him to sign for West Brom.

 

Presumably this was at the end of the transfer window when we were watching some of the best football we've ever seen. Agent took a bung more like.

 

What impact does it really have? Especially when you consider under our model it probably just saves Giraldi and maybe Duxbury a trip to Stoke. That's about it.

 

Agents and something not right at club means 'not enough cash for me'

 

So....over the course of the day, we get bids for Capoue, Deeney, Okaka and for instance Prodl....and the club have said we need to sell before we can buy, so unlikely we will have new faces before deadline day at this rate. If those 4 say are pulled from the squad pending talks about a move elsewhere, it has a big impact on the squad we can pick from for a very important game.

 

Just constantly repeating this, doesn't make it true, you do know that yeah?

 

We have a full 25 man squad plus Cathcart so whilst money wise we may not squad wise we do.

 

There will be deals in place. It’s not as if it’ll come as a sudden surprise to anyone that Okaka may leave. Demands may drop as the deadline gets near, but that’s also true for our targets.

It’s also not like we are above leaving someone out altogether, esp someone unlikely to get fit soon.

 

I apologise. I thought I saw it said somewhere but can't seem to find the article or may have misinterpreted what I saw. However, it doesn't take a genius to see that the squad is full. So as mentioned above, financially we may be able to buy without selling - I doubt Gino would though.

So me constantly saying it doesn't make it true, I agree. Common sense tells you that it is true though.

 

I honestly do not know what "aspects of Deeney" you are thinking of - apart from being good at penalties.

In 90 Premier League appearances, he has got as many yellow cards as he has scored goals in open play (14), plus a red card.
He has given away 105 free kicks, and has been offside 46 times, effectively stopping our attacks, at least 151 times.

Maybe you think he has been an inspirational leader? A model professional?

Enlighten me, please.

 

In my opinion:
He is far better at bringing our wider players into the game than the two others we have.
He carries a mental threat for opposition defenders than Gray or Okaka.
He will work better in a 2 with Gray than Okaka.
It may be his main source of goals, but he is a sound penalty taker.
He more than any other current player can still galvanise the rest of the team.

The last point is on the wane, I agree. He doesn’t carry the leadership that he did. But he is still our most authorative player. We aren’t blessed with leaders.

I am not advocating we keep Deeney forever and a day. The price being mooted is a good price. But I don’t believe Remy is a sound replacement under our current circumstances. So if he or Afobe, are the options right now - I’d prefer to stick rather than twist. If a better replacement comes along, I’m wouldn’t be against it. And I would certainly move him along in the summer and change captains. I just wouldn’t if the options are the ones being presented today, at this moment.

I agree with this. £21m is a good price for Deeney, but we need better than Remy and/or Afobe in as replacements.

I think people are undervaluing Deeney's contribution. He's still a valuable member of the first team squad. He turned the game around with his introduction against Arsenal and Southampton.

To sell him now, without a much better replacement coming in, would be rank stupidity IMO, regardless of fee. We've turned down much bigger offers for him in the past, btw.

 

Well yeah but as his price has dropped so has his influence in our games.

But you are right, I don't agree.
I havn't seen any evidence of him working better with the wide players.
Gray, I would agree, but not more than Okaka. And Deeney has shown he is too easily wound up.
We have barely seen Gray and Okaka working together apart from 2nd half yesterday, and Okaka's addition worked quite well, I hear.
Deeney's influence seems limited to me as he can't demonstrate how it should be done. Barely any of his teammates have seen him in his prime and he is unprofessional.

But overall, Deeney's replacement would be coming in, I suggest, to score some bloody goals - and Deeney just doesn't do that any more.

Agree with most of this. I read somewhere that Deeney hasn't scored in open play this season. Which begs the question as to why people want him to stay. Gray has scored in the last 2 league games so that's better than nothing.

 

A relief?! Losing out on a pacy striker who is better than what we currently have, wouldn't cost much, and has scored a decent amount of goals this season? Ummm...

Who is injury prone and has an attitude problem. No thanks, we've got a squad full of those already. He didn't want to come anyway, only as last choice. So it's all worked out well in the end.

 

But the choice isn’t between Deeney or Gray? It’s surely between Deeney and Okaka. Or Deeney and Afobe. As it stands at the minute anyway with the info we have...hopefully that changes.

But given the scenarios above, Deeney stays both times for me. But I respect others don’t feel that way.

 

Have you been watching Premier League Years 13/14 reruns on Sky? Because his football career has been on the decline since with injuries and a big-time attitude to boot.
