So this MP has weighed it up and decided to go with cosying up with religious fascists over human rights.

Either to score more votes from Muslims in his constituency or because he's feeling more self-righteous and right on by siding with an ethnic minority group instead of backing human rights.

A great example of the regressive left and how they back a bunch of homophobic, misogynistic freedom haters because it makes them feel better to stand with people of colour, irrespective of their fascist fairy stories.

I don't think it is an example of the regressive left at all, just a weak-minded & self-serving individual who has been reported to the Labour party for his comments. It is so typical of these moral crusaders to campaign on behalf of something they have no understanding of - he admits to not have read the material even though he claims it's not age appropriate.

When it comes to teaching kids about sex, never mind sexuality, there is plenty of prejudice. It doesn't matter what race, religion, gender, age or political persuasion a person has, this prejudice runs across the whole spectrum! It's part of the 'British reserve', too many parents are still so uncomfortable talking about sex to their kids and refuse to accept they are aware of sex from an early age. There is still a strong mentality of 'if we teach them about it, that'll encourage them to do it', despite clear evidence from Holland, Sweden etc that the opposite is true.

He's nothing to do with the left whatsoever. This is exactly the type of behaviour that puts the right wing of the Labour Party at odds with most other Labour supporters. Will you moan about it when the Left deselect him for it?

Frankly, you are just regurgitating the 'left prefers Muslims' lies Robert. The purpose is simply to divide, don't fall for it. The Left is solidly behind the school on this.

An interesting development. I notice also that one of the schools at the centre of the protests has bowed to pressure from the religious community and dropped its LGBT 'lessons'. I wonder how Sadiq Khan will respond when the protests spread to London schools. Fascinating

Corrected. Surely you didn't mean 'religious fascists'?

I did. All religions are fascist as they are based on their version of things being superior and that you are not worthy if you don't share their beliefs.

Almost totally incorrect I'm afraid, and a hypocritical assertion that suggests that you have, to use your own choice of word, a fascist view of religion. What you claim is offensive and I speak as an atheist. It is as prejudicial as saying 'All blacks are...', 'all women are....', all gay people are....' etc.

The belief you assume all religions have about everyone else is a view shared by only the fundamentalist end of the spectrum. This is not followed by the vast majority of followers of religions today. For example, a central teaching in Islam, believed by all but the extremists, is that there is no compulsion in religion. Most Christians also have had this pluralist approach for a long time.

I haven't been following this, however I heard on LBC that one of the main ringleaders of the protest doesn't have children.

    Is that right?

I'm talking about the texts and philosophies of religion, not individuals. For example, Islam calls for the death of those that leave it and taxes for non-believers; Christianity says that Christians must put religion and worship ahead of everything in their life, including family. Both are also massively bad news for gay people, advocate slavery and promise eternal torture for non-believers.

Fortunately, human decency means that the majority of religious people cherry pick their beliefs from their religious texts and gloss over a lot of the unpleasant stuff. Follow them to the letter and you would be a religious fascist because of the content.

I'm not sure that's really true. I don't think you even have to believe in God to be a C of E vicar these days

Believers have to be selective. Jesus apparently told people to give away everything and follow him but few Christians actually do. If all Catholics followed their Church's instructions not to use artificial contraception we'd be massively overpopulated, so I do agree with you for the most part. Most religious people haven't actually read that much of their sacred texts, they rely on their priests/imams or whoever to lead them. Those who do follow their texts to the letter are the fundamentalists but even they have to select what they'll follow. Jesus is recorded as saying 'If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away' but I've not seen many deliberately one-eyed fundamentalists around!

Much of the unpleasant stuff reflects the society & culture of the time and any verse is open to interpretation - as is any story, historical or not. It's unfortunate that the narrative of the texts has been dictated by middle-aged/elderly, sexist, racist, homophobic and war-mongering men over the centuries in order to maintain their position of power. That narrative is slowly evolving for the better but it'll still take many more generations for attitudes to change. It's not religion per se that can be fascist, it's one narrow interpretation of it. I know many practicing Christians & Muslims who are very open-minded when it comes to LGBT issues and many professed athiests who think it should be 'banned'!

Sorry to waffle on but as you can see I do find it all fascinating!
