Jarrod Bowen looks like he is going to Palace (who are also signing Nathan Ferguson it seems). Exciting signings for them.
But it's really hard to do business in January according to the apologists. When it's us and you have clowns running the show. Not for anyone else it seems. But let's hope the club keep leaking to their mouthpiece Leventhal that we are 'interested' in other people's reserves. The vast majority will clap along merrily.
Came here to say something similar, pretty sure they've got one of the oldest squads in the league (along with us), so getting some quality in which also reduces the age of the squad is good business by them. His contract is up in the summer which is why the fee is "low".
Least the Under 18s keep stockpiling players.. https://mobile.twitter.com/WatfordFC/status/1222898482710663168
Don't know why we bother with our own youngsters let alone bringing cast offs in. More chance of Donald Duck being a first team regular then any of these ****s.
As you say, the apologist attitude of some of our fans must play a huge role. I've just been told on Twitter that "Mapps has been quality!". It's laughable that so many of our fans refuse to take off their rose tinted glasses just because players are "one of our own" or "a true professional". Neither of those things make them a genuine Premier League footballer and Mariappa is a prime example of that. It's laughable that he is still playing games for us, even more so when they're out of his natural position. Pressure from the fanbase does make a difference. Unfortunately for us we have a fanbase of which the majorities attitude is along the lines of "omg mappz is a legend! One of our own!", making it even easier for Pozzo to keep his wallet closed.
I'm not convinced by Bowen from what I've seen of him, seems a bit too much of a clogger to have that high a ceiling. Palace are in a position where they can afford to take a punt on a player of his profile, but I don't expect him to shine for them.
Jarrod Bowen does seem to fit the exact type of player Watford could do with. Hugely disappointing to see him close to Palace and us not even rumoured to be close. May well go on to be a flop but with his record, he's as close to a "safe" gamble as you could take from The Championship.
Right on cue, Watford have released an article on the website where Mariappa says he’s prepared to play anywhere along the back line, he just wants to be on the pitch. Prepare for disappointment tomorrow swiftly followed by a new deal for our Adrian.
As mentioned above, I'm being told Mariappa is quality and doesn't deserve any criticism on Twitter, and apparently "most of our fans would agree". Most of our fans are morons, then.
I’m 100% convinced the club monitor these forums and run the official site with no intentions beyond trolling us.
The main flaw in the whoscored ratings is that they seem to slightly overvalue goals and assists (if that's possible). It could also well be that he's very effective in the Championship but it won't always translate to the PL. The couple of times I've seen him play with my own eyes he's looked a very average player, but just with a cracking shot on him if given enough space. I don't think he'll get so many opportunities in the PL with his lack of sharpness elsewhere and so his overall usefulness will drop quite a lot. An exact quote of mine taken from the Pedersen thread on this issue: "Of course the top players from the Champ don't always thrive when they get their move to the PL, but enough of them do for it to be worth a punt" ...and as I said above in this thread, Palace are in a position where they can afford to take such a punt on a player like him, but given the ratio of flops to successes when top Champ players move to the PL is maybe 1:1 (just a hunch, maybe somewhere there's a more precise analysis), my belief is that Bowen will end up more on the failure side than the success one.
£16m and if he gets 8 goals, it's likely we stay up, we go down and he's a ready made Championship level striker for our attempts to get back. It's such a no brainer that it's absolutely no surprise we weren't in for him. At all.
I think Sheffield United have a good player in Sander Berge from Genk. A decent midfielder, deep lying with the ability to lope forward to good effect and young at 21, 22 next month. We're probably over stocked in that position and at £22m needs to be in the side regularly.
The main question asked about him must be "how come he is never injured or even a doubt"?! I remember artctles from other players saying he is the best trainer etc - well not sure what that says about the others! Clearly ability wise he isn't good enough but must do something right fitness wise.
I have no doubt he trains hard and is a model professional, he's just woefully out of his depth as a Premier League defender. He's put in a couple or decent performances here and there, but on the whole he should be nowhere near a Premier League team.
It can only be judged a culmination if we think things will change from here on in. I’m not convinced.
Fair point - it's the fact other get injured and we don't seem to get any new defenders in that keeps him there.
It's some peoples opinion. I'm fairly sure not everybody agrees with everything you post but don't feel the need dig you out with some sarcastic drivel
I think Sheffield United’s signing of Sander Berge makes the point I’ve been trying to make quite well. Lundstram and Fleck have been instrumental for them this season along with it’s Oliver Norwood. But Wilder isn’t just settling - none of them deserve to be dropped but they they will because £22m is a statement. They aren’t standing still thinking they’ve cracked it. We’ve sat on this bunch of defenders for a long time and occasionally thrown a couple of million at someone unknown or average.
What do you want people to do, have a protest? If you're that unhappy why don't you organise one instead of taking the easy option and digging out the club on here, as well as anyone who shows a morsel of positivity!
It’s called a difference of opinion? Given a lot of the more positive fans stated that they were sure Gino would act on the defence in January, it’s surely to be expected? Is GD’s sarcasm warranted at times? Of course not. But you have every right to fire back at him - it’s just only one side of the argument seem to get angry when that happens?
I get plenty. I give plenty. Unlike some, I don't cry about someone having a different opinion to me.
I’m assuming that Adam Leventhal will be at Watford tomorrow to oversee all the incredible signings that we are bound to make tomorrow. Could be quite a day
A different opinion is fine. It's a forum and it's all about different opinions. What is annoying is the sarcastic tosh that gets posted. I also don't think anybody has disagreed that we've let the defence become a bit of a mess
