You can't have everything. We're not Man City looking to sign world class players who are excellent across the board, the chances of us signing a winger that's brilliant going forward but also busts his arse to get back and has great defensive awareness are slim to none. The fact is that the primary role of someone like Grosicki will be to do the business in the final third, not to be defensively astute.

If Silva didn't think he was capable of playing the role he wouldn't be signing him. This isn't some unknown entity we're taking a punt on, this is a player he's worked with whilst using the same system as recently as a few months ago.

If we sign Grosicki. I'm 100% behind him and hope he proves me wrong, if he does then i'll throw my hands up and admit i was wrong. But I personally don't see it. But I am not a top level football manager so what the **** do i know? Then again, when does that stop anyone from chatting the absolute drivel that people spout?

Not keen on this guy. As pointed out (correctly), a winger in our team will have huge defensive responsibilities - a factor behind Berghuis not staying with us last season I believe.

I look forward to seeing Amrabat in a role where he isn't isolated on the wing, like last season, but where he'll be having players overlap him and giving him options. In Silva's formation, he cannot hide - he has to cut it, there'll be no excuses this time round.

I can't see Grosicki having the energy needed. A bit like Ozil for Arsenal, who is clearly not that well sought after. Another example of a player who cannot defend. And there's good reason why there aren't clubs queuing up for him...

If we are going for Grosecki it will be in the role of winger under Silva and not right wing-back. Silva will play with supporting fullbacks in a different formation. The confusion arises because Amrabat was often played out of position by QSF and Mazzari, probably more than any other player at WFC. I do have some sympathy for Amrabat on that score. Would he be receiving so much flack now if Zuniga had been the RB or RWB? Not great fan of Grosicki for the money Hull are after. Really want Ghezzal or failing him Carrillo, but the former would cost nothing up front. Two seasons ago scored 8 and 8 assists for Lyon. Wonderful left foot and technically top drawer - style of Payet. Comes with some baggage but we have a manager in Silva who I'm confident can deal with all our squad. COYHS

I'd much much rather we spent the money trying to get Ashley Young for about £5/6m. Can play both sides. Can play wing back. Tracks back. Experienced. Homegrown. If we could get him to lower his wages, it makes perfect sense for both parties.

    You're discrediting Ozil hahahahahaha?

The man is a Champions League, World Cup, multiple FA Cup, La Liga, Copa Del Rey winning midfielder. He's been Germany Player of the Year 5 out of the last 6 years. Top assists World Cup 2010, top assists Premier League 15/16 But boo-hoo he doesn't run around..

Have a day off! He's not "sought after" because he doesn't want to leave! He's one of the most talented football players of this generation.

Haha glad we can agree this time. I love Ozil! Ozil also travelled more than Sanchez last season, I know the stats can lie as Capoue was up there wasn't he but Ozil being "lazy" is a pure myth.

I'll be honest I know a lot of people don't like him but I actually never doubted capoues effort. His consistency to deliver is where the question marks remain.

Why should the winger be defensive?

We are playing four at the back, 2 defensive mids, we lack goals, and play 1 upfront, let the wingers do their job - attacking and whipping in crosses.

    Wingers not wingbacks

  15. Burnsy

Because we are Watford. In the PL. we cannot afford to leave 3 players up the pitch doing nothing when we are without the ball. Or even 2. I agree that any wingers attacking force is what should be considered first and foremost but they should definitely have the ability and desire to track back and help as well.

It's not 'mental' though is it? That's a bit OTT. Criticism of his career is stupid. Criticism of him last season is pretty valid.

Neither Capoue or Ozil are lazy. Capoue has a languid looping running style, which is deceptive. He is much quicker than he first appears and his finishing looks pretty good to me (have feeling stats back that up). Yesterday he scored towards the end of the game. I would say that it fairly atypical for him because I think only weakness is stamina. He usually gives his all in the first 70 minutes. Probably why he would not get in the current all action Spurs team. Hoping he will be rotated as an attacking mid to keep him fresh. Ozil has wonderful vision and passing. Neither of these guys. are defenders or defensive mids. They have to do their bit in the engine room but you expect more of that stuff from a Xhaka or Behrami. What we still appear to be missing is pace up front and down the flanks. Two wingers and a striker is now a priority. We are way behind most EPL teams on this score. Would even consider getting Iggy back from China! COYHS

Agree he is a player who if he starts ought to be subbed as he fades in and out in the second half.

Ozil to me looks a bit like Torres did in his latter years. He can do something magic but it's increasingly few and far between. With his ability he should be running games and he's not, hence why people think he can't be bothered. But enough about Ozil...

I agree Capoue isn't lazy but there were times last season where his head dropped first when we were up against it. And he got away with it on a regular basis because he had no competition for his place. I think that will change this season. We also need to remember that before he came to us, he was a DM who sometimes filled in at CB. We are trying to get him to adapt his style. But he definitely needs to be more consistent as he now has players ready to take his shirt. But he'll start in our team next year, I have no doubts.

Ozil is merely an example of one player who might give his team a number of qualities, mostly attacking flair and creativity, but he fades in and out of games, he doesn't defend from the front or have the ability to stick a good tackle in when needed. Compare that with someone like Hazard, a player who does have those qualities - even the likes of Courtinho, Rashford (when played out wide), Pedro, Sterling, etc, have a defensive element to their game. Ozil doesn't. Berghuis doesn't. Amrabat does.

And that's my point. Yes, we need good attacking players but Watford will always need to be defensively strong throughout - we don't attract the best defensive players in the world and therefore we need to make up for that around the pitch.

If so, either the Germans must know nothing about football or perhaps have had a really weak set of players the last 5-6 years ?

Hazard literally stopped playing for Mourinho because he didn't want to track back.

Why do people make things up?

Capoue regularly hid last season, especially in games against better teams when we went a goal or two down. He'd just pass sideways and then position himself where he couldn't get the ball passed to him, he'd basically bottle it and wasn't up for trying to get us back into games. That's why he plays for us though, he's not got the mental strength to be top level player, he's more than happy to play for a club like us and have the ability to turn it on when he wants and hide when he doesn't.

To everyone here saying that a winger would have to do a lot of defensive duties, remember we will have 2 great CDMs in the form of Chalobah and Doucoure who's main responsibility will be breaking up play and then pinging the ball to a CAM or winger. In this system the wingers will primarily attack, which is why Grosicki seems like a good choice. He will have to get back from time to time but if Doucoure and Chalobah do a good job, he won't be in his own half as much as a lot of you think.

I always wonder if Capoue suffers from S.A.D as his best performances for us have tended to be early and late in the season when the sun is often shining and the days are longer.
