Tbf one of them also said "he's basically the best striker to have ever played in the Championship" or similar. Getting more excited by the minute.

Hopefully we'll announce Clinton Morrison or Dave Nugent next.

I disagree. Getting rid of Deeney gets rid of one ageing, has been, immobile striker. It's not a position that needs filling. Just get the **** out. Don't replace it with new ****.

But Deeney is an aging, has been, immobile striker on £50k (£100k?), who won't sit around on the bench, and who we could potentially get a few quid for in the form of a transfer fee.

Murray may be slow, and not charge around aimlessly pressing goalkeepers like Deeney, but he saves his energy and makes the runs that matter which is why he scores goals.

With the condensed fixture list, depth is even more important, and how many other championship clubs have a 3rd/4th choice striker with the pedigree Murray does?

What the f**k is going on.
The club needs to be more transparent.
We have now committed to a 36 year old who struggles to get into very poor brighton forward line,no confirmed transfers in or out.

What happens if none of our tangible assets are sold .

Should be shipping out , Gray , Success ,Welbeck and possibly Cleverly at the least

I’d have preferred this signing 2 seasons ago. But one thing I will say, out of all the strikers we have even now on our books Murray is easily the best at heading in crosses. Just go to hope his legs are able to get anywhere near the right positions still and he’s not gone all Chris Iwelumo.

He couldn't get in ahead of Maupay, who's quite good tbf. I get it's very odd for this to have been sprung on us, but it's not like he's going to be our only striking option this season, if he scores goals, great, if he doesn't, we have others who hopefully can

I was actually struck by how much better his movement is than Deeney's in the two games last season. He's always on the move (granted, not at full pace) but he's constantly moving laterally across the back four, meaning defenders have to readjust and pass him on, plus he was looking to go down the channels rather than just plonk himself in the middle of pitch for a wrestling match with the centre back. He's an intelligent player, probably not as good on the ball as Deeney but considerably better off it.

Murray is far more valuable than Deeney.

    I hear he's worth a mint.

if Maupay is" Quite Good" , then Deeney stats indicate that is he is better , so how can people believe that Murray is a upgrade , with very a small transfer fee off loading Deeney doesn't make any sense , people have quoted quick counter attacking football which is not suited to either Deeney or Murray, the club should cut there loses on Gray and Success , loan them out at a percentage of their wages.
if Troy goes i honestly believe that the club will slip in to the media background and slowly die.

Still think it’s a terrible decision to bring Murray in. But even I have to admit his powers of levitation are strong.

As far as we can tell, Ivic played 3-5-2 against Scunthorpe on Saturday. If that’s the preferred formation, then vying to play up front we would have Deeney, Deulofeu, Welbeck, Suarez, Penaranda, Success, Gray, Joao Pedro and Murray - maybe it’s where Sarr would best fit too. Add Perica and Forestieri and it’s clear we’re going to have to shift a lot of players in a short space of time.

First reassuring post of the summer. I agree with this. He was a handful that Deeney wasn't simply because he moves about and looks for the space.

Yes, although our centre-backs could make a wheelie bin look a threat.

I did watch a few YouTube videos on him earlier, have to admit he's decent and finding space in the box and good in the air. Not a disappointed as last night but still find it an odd signing. He must be still on a fair wedge or are Brighton subsidising some of his wages? Nothing but compliments written by Brighton but you'd expect that. I'm more interested in seeing who is off. Deeney and Gray maybe.

One thing I will say about this is that whilst I doubt Murray is much faster or slower than Deeney, his positional sense is far better and he’s also far better in the air. If we have wide players putting crosses into the box, he’ll likely be there unlike Troy who was mikes behind always claiming he wanted the pull-back 25 yards from goal.

Erm yeah, Deeney hit 5 penalties, Maupay hit 1. It's not going to be quick counter-attacking football as well, it's mainly going to be controlled possession, cut it whichever way you like, whichever style we go for, Murray gets in the box, Deeney doesn't. Not expecting him to be an upgrade on Suarez, but he's an upgrade on Deeney for sure

I don’t really think you can bring Messi into a conversation about Glenn Murray.

  31. Burnsy

Yes. Although slightly worried to hear that he’s left Brighton because he wants regular football - and that’s landed him with us. He’s either extremely confident of forcing his way in to a regular spot (which is fine) or we’ve made silly promises.

  32. Carpster

Surely Murray can't expect to be involved in every game next season. Big ask for a nearly 37 yr old. He will certainly get more minutes with us than at Brighton though.
His all round attitude is what I'm liking at the moment. If he's the Deeney replacement then I'm ok. Maybe Deeneys demeanor around the club is more powerful than I thought and just by removing that and bringing in new positive outlooks from say Murray could be exactly what is needed.

  33. Burnsy

    Burnsy First Team

That’s what he did at Brighton. And he’s moved because he doesn’t want that and wants more. I think some are talking themselves into the ‘glass half-full’ scenario here without looking at what’s being said by the club he’s just left. Which is fine - no problem with positivity...but I expect he might play far more than some are thinking.

Whichever way you look at this, it’s a completely uninspiring signing.

Sure, he may score a few goals but there’s a million other players that can do that in the championship that are younger and more mobile and a better use of cash

  35. Hogg-DEENEY!!!

Ivic is particularly known for shaking things up, if Murray is playing but not performing, he isn't going to keep picking him (I mean, I very much doubt this is the hill Giraldi and the Pozzos want to die on!)
