    Going well so far... :dismay:

Out of interest in what sports did BOA expect GB to win medals? Are we ahead, spot on or behind target at this stage?

I think they wanted to try and beat the 16 Golds of 2008.

I get the impression that we're behind. Well behind.

However, I may be mistaking BBC hype for the genuine realistic expectations. For example, Hannah Miley was hyped by the Beeb pundits, but was miles off in her final and overall in the pool, we just look like the rest of the world has got 2 seconds faster whilst GB swimmers have stood still.

Cavendish and the Dream Team would have been an expected gold.

Daley was hyped, but I don't think anyone who really followed diving was tipping him to do more than he's done.

Maybe there are a lot of athletes I don't know about, but in my head, we're looking at medals of various colours in the following order - a few from rowing, a couple from sailing, 2-3 from boxing and 2-3 from athletics and maybe a couple from horsey sports. Cycling is obviously our biggest chance, but then, it's difficult to see us surpassing what was acheive in the velodrome in Beijing. It's easy to see us doing worse, however.

So then we've got swimming, judo, tae kwon do, badmington etc. What do you reckon out of those, 3 medals of any colour across the board?

It looks to me like we're aiming to do as well as Athens, rather than Beijing.

The Road Race was an opportunity missed.

We've still got a medal chance in canoeing. Badminton hasn't gone well, nor has table tennis. We won't get anything out of tennis. I expect something from sailing, a few from rowing, cycling etc, but as you say will they even match the medal haul of Beijing?

The mens gymnastics has been a nice surprise and there's an outside chance of a medal (currently 5th at this stage). Edit: currently 2nd!

I don't know about sports such as fencing, judo or shooting. I see we still have a chance of a medal in archery.

Maybe we'll be surprised in the athletics...

  9. wfcmoog

    wfcmoog Tinpot

I really don't see any surprises in Athletics. I follow athletics enough to know we have some people who might finish in Bronze or silver (Shakes-Drayton, Dai Green, Jess Ennis) and Mo Farrah who has a chance of a medal, but to expect gold against the likes of Bekele is a big ask in either event. So many variables. Bascially from the whole teams, I think a haul of 4 medals including 1 gold would be an acheivement.

I don't think there'll be even many more finalists than this lot, let alone medal hopefuls. Is Idowu going to turn up?

If we go by the BBC hype it feels like we are under achieving but I don't know...maybe 3 medals down on best case (2 for swimming and 1 in the cycling). Need a gold!

Maybe but never seem to do as well as expected in swimming...not enough confidence/desire to reach the medals?

Just noticed one of the gymnastics guys comes from Hemel:

I think you're doing it a dis-service by calling it the bloke's rollie pollies Moog lol

Some of the stuff they can do is phenominal. The strength needed for the rings is ridiculous

Prentice must have edited my post. That's not my wording. I've nothing but admiration for even rubbish gymnasts, let alone the boys today, who outdid themselves.

To be fair to the swimmers representing GB, Foster remarked that at (****, can't remember if he said) Australia in 2008 we only had 4 finalists in the whole of the swimming week whereas we've already had more than that and it's only Day 3.

    Medals, no. Progress, yes.

The same for the gymnasts. The praise heaped on the men for getting the bronze sent tingles up my spine and to hear the expert in the comms box say that the younger guys coming through were plentiful and extremely talented goes to show (fingers crossed!) that foundations are being laid across the sports.

Football? It's all about expensive prima donnas really and the FA have been so slow to recognise this.

But the future of British sport is pretty healthy in my eyes regardless of the medals won or not won at London 2012.

I agree, the future does look more promising. It's also good to see people I know who were previously not fussed about the olympics now being so supportive but the hype caused by the press could make make the enthusiasm backfire if we don't get the rewards expected and whilst we might have made progress the majority might not see the bigger picture

As a youngster myself, I'm inspired to give up looting, loitering and generally being unpleasant and I'm going to go out and train for the next London Olympics in 4 years' time.

Al Jazeera report this is costing us $20 billion.

The Sydney games cost a "mere" $3 billion.

We've been mugged off and it's a waste of money for three weeks and precious little legacy, like the loss of the Eastway Cycle circuit and a huge piece of Hackney Marshes, home of proper football.

I read a report about the economic result/impacts of holding large sporting events like a World Cup or Olympics that said the results are nearly always waaaaaay oversold and the actual impacts don't really materialize as expected. I read it trying to console myself after both England and the US were passed over in favor of Qatar and Russia for the World Cup.

The two Brownlee brothers are good bet for medals in the Triathlon, quite possibly Gold and Silver?

Agreed. Havnt we got a good chance in the womens Triathlon also, think we have dominated the sport over the last year or so in both sexes.

I see certain medals as premium wins in the summer games. Track events, gymnastics, swimming in my case. Others have their idea, but that's mine.

Lots of the medals the US gets are legitimate but kind of weird and seem like medal padding sometimes: archery, synchronized swimming or diving, dressage, NBA Hoops, air rifle (!?)... But I am always proud of, proudest of track, swimming and gymnastics.

It is massive that Britain won a men's team medal in gymnastics. That is a huge prize, one to be really proud of. This is no pros turned Oly athletes event like cycling, soccer or basketball. That is real Olympic success.

Permit me to appear a bit thick ( nothing unusual I know) but is there a rule stating each nation can only have a set number of representatives for each discipline?
Because it seems to me that we always have less represntatives than the likes of the US and China. Is this because they don't cut their numbers, as we do?

  34. hornmeister

    hornmeister Tired

Agreed, it's the athletics gymnastics & swimming which I consider the premier events. Probably considered the top championship of those sports as well. I'd chuck in cycling and rowing as well but that may be because blighty have been decent at them recently.
