Haha, more incoherent nonsense. Are people really this simple that they can't accept that it's possible to love the club and be concerned/disappointed about the direction of travel?

And we're not even in the stadium at the moment! How goes "giving our full support" on a website actually help at all? You think they read your posts and decide to run around a bit more? Who's not getting behind the players that are actually playing anyway?

Just reading the Ivic interview on the club site and he talks clearly about working with players who want to be at Watford and want to work hard. I for 1 and I’m sure most of the fans completely agree with this sentiment and I can’t wait to get rid of the players who can’t be professionals and play for the team that they are contracted to. It should be in their contract that if they refuse to play they should get 0% of their wages. I know we need the cash flow from player sales but a part of me wishes the owner would just banish them to train on their own and rot out the remaining time on their contracts. Then let’s see what BIG clubs come knocking for a player with 0 minutes of football in 2 years.

Really sticks in the craw that we are paying the likes of Pereyra tens of thousands of pounds a week with no expectation that they do their job. No other industry would tolerate this.

Its clear to anyone with a brain that we need to cutback. Relegations one thing but covid just worsens it all.

Theres two contrasting views that paradoxically seems to exist in peoples heads. We need to get the bad eggs out, get the older players out, give the younger players a go. But at the same time not sell our assets. On top of that you have players too good for the championship, who want out (that means they dont want to play for us if it's too difficult to comprehend).

Definitely. Stick them together somewhere away from the squad, so they can sit there on Instagram all day and talking about how they're too good for the championship, even though their attitude and shortcomings took us there.

Only three too good are Sarr, Capoue and Deulofeu, none of whom have kicked up a massive fuss. So no, most aren't too good so we should bin off the rest of the ****s who can't be arsed.

I presume someone like Dawson has been tapped up or just doesn't fancy working with Ivic if he wants to go and sit on the bench at Burnley?

Isn't that what he didn't like last season - not playing games.

I can see why other big names with egos want to leave..

Or we are looking to sell them.

But last night showed it will leave us very weak.

Luton fans are looking forward to 2 weeks time - they fancy their chances.

Problem is the knuckleheads in charge will sack Ivi* while he is building the team as soon as they lose 3 games during rebuild.

Probably just as well we won last night !

And have 3 more average teams to play ..

Definitely cannot judge Ivic till the squad is settled and we know who is staying.

Is this really a major surprise? Ok I expected to se more of these players involved at the stage, but I suspected this might drag on a bit .

The Covid situation has unfortunately exacerbated this issue , with a slow moving transfer market, but we all know we need to sell and the club have to see who they can sell before they can replace . This is the reality of being relegated from the premier league . I expect most of the transfer business will be done very late , with clubs waiting it out . But I suspect the club have a number of targets ready to get in as bad when players are sold.

This is unfortunately the situation we are in . I’m not gonna get over excited about a couple of players who have great potential but are unproven in the English game . I’d rather we sold Suarez if it means we keep Sarr . But then it’s all speculation at the moment anyway.

I’m gonna see what squad we have on Oct 5th and then make my judgement. Maybe I’m too layed back about it but there’s not much I can do either way .

If it’s true that Dawson is throwing his toys though then get rid for sure . He rarely looked like a premier league player last season. We might have stayed up if he’d have performed .

Out of the 17 it’s reasonable to accept that some are genuine. Some will be injured and some (Sarr for example) unable to join in yet.

Of the others it’s clear from Ivic interview they have not played because HE has chosen not to select them because he feels they aren’t fully wanting to play here. That is slightly different from players saying they won’t or don’t want to play last night. Chances are they would happily play but they are still hoping for a move away.

Fair play to Ivic who comes out of this with some credit already, that squad last night wasn’t very good but they are the ones who want to be here and they got us a win.

Our squad in 5 weeks time will be much better than that and now we also know whoever plays is fully in for playing for us.

plus the premiership is always going to be a golden goose to the Pozzos. We have just as much chance now at promotion as we did in the other seasons we tried to get up. Doesn’t make sense to sell players for 100M when you can recoup that cumulatively in the prem each year and sell players (which is your meat and drink day job) at a higher price there.

I know Baz and other owners have burnt us but the pozzos ain’t them

I’d be far more worried if the decent future talent went to udinese ie Sarr

Not that it makes any difference. After 5 years in the PL, somehow we've ended up in dire straits financially and have to sell everyone and get cheap/loan replacements.

What like the time they sacked Sannino and McKinley? I can buy into a longer term rebuild as a fan but you can’t do it as a manager with such trigger happy fools running the club.

A number of clubs went down the same route.
We were always in a financial mess. Relegation has just highlighted trouble we are in.
We don't have the assets to sell as Bournemouth do. We cannot expect to raise the kind of funds they can get. Norwich are run on tight financial lines.
It is more like a Jumble Sale not Fire Sell with regards to our players. Apart from Sarr, the rest are on their way down.
Ivic will do the best he can with the players he has. Expectations are not high.
We are in a mess, but most on this site knew this would be the outcome, relegation or not.

I agree. The squad last night was undoubtedly not as strong as what we would have liked. But each and every one of those players wants to play and they deserve credit and our support for that.

I think most of our problems last year were down to the mental attitude of the players. The talent that we have on paper didn't turn up on too many occasions last year.

So yes, some of the players playing last night are not "up to standard"....yet. But I think there is enough potential there, with a few of the genuinely injured players returning, to make us at least competitive in this league.

I think it's perfectly acceptable to criticise the club, owners, manager and players when they make mistakes, or lack effort, but terms like "rancid" are over the top and counterproductive imo.

I don’t think people are criticising the players (well maybe Sinclair will have fun poked at him).

It’s the owners. 5 years of TV money, yet mortgaged to the hilt and now carrying about 10 mercenaries who are so duff nobody wants them and looking like we will sell 2 of the bright spark prospects. They are an utter shambles I think and deserve all the criticism they get. Not that they care about what the fans think anyway: they’ll just keep using our club for their toxic model.

  25. Loyalhornet

So how do we know the 2 ‘ bright sparks ‘ aren’t also mercenaries? I’m sure they aren’t motivated by money in the slightest . In which case why would we want to hold onto them ?Or does The definition of mercenary depend on whether they are any good or not.

I agree with that principle. Certainly I don’t want the likes of Deeney and Pereyra anywhere near our match day squads, however, we are gonna need 25 players over the season. Youth prospects, Kiko and Sinclair are not the backups that will slot in and be good enough.

Great that the terds are being flushed but we need 10 new players.

So the players virtually certain to go are:-

    Welbeck £5.5m
    Deulofeu
    Deeney
    Suarez
    Estupinan £15m
Doucoure (already gone of course) £20m
    Capoue
    Femenia
    Pussetto £7m
    Sarr £40m
    Pereyra

That's £87.5m from known valuations, plus a lot more for the others. Plenty of money coming in, probably around £60m+ for the others. Could be looking at £150m worth of talent.

What we'll be left with, of any note, is Foster, Ngakia, Quina, Hughes & Pedro. I don't really rate anyone else as being "very good" for the league they are in.

If it pans out that way, then promotion will be unlikely, but at least debts will be paid off.

8 years on from the Pozzo's ownership, we could be in almost the same place as before they arrived. An ordinary Championship club with small debt. It's been a ride, and a good one for the most part, but maybe it's now run its course.

In a way, we're feeling the consequences of the Pozzos not following their own model i.e. buy cheap and sell at peak value.

For a lot of players, peak value was 18 months + ago. Deeney, Doucouré, Pereyra, Capoue as examples. Now we've been relegated it has exposed that these are assets of depreciating value and have become a financial albatross around our necks.

Consequently, looks like we're going to have to sell more players and at lower value than we would have planned for in a relegation scenario, leaving the team shorn back on talent needed to get us promoted.

How far that retrenchment needs to go remains to be seen, but the more the club entertains offers for young players (Pervis, Suarez, Sarr) and those who can still realistically add value in the Championship (Hughes, Capoue, even Gray) the more depressing the picture. You would hope that the balance is still there to be struck, but 17 players, an entire team and subs, sitting there not going anywhere doesn't inspire confidence.
