As Super Sky Sports, Super exciting transfer windows TM go its pretty boring. We have the same team essentially as last year, give or take. and the same manager. Lets give them a go eh? As we've seen before expensive and new doesn't always mean better and an improvement and doesn't translate into points. A lot of it is tactics, commitment and an understanding of how we play.
Very few decent signings since going up? With the exception of Deulofeu, Richarlison, Capoue, Chalobah, Doucoure, Cleverley, Hughes, Holebas, Britos, Femenia, Berhami, Janmaat, Prodl, Foster, Pereyra, Mariappa and possibly Gray (let’s see this season)?
I am pretty disappointed we didn't take advantage of the Richarlison money, even if just to sign a half decent replacement. Slightly alarming that we haven't addressed the Striker or CB situating which has not been good for a while now! Seems like an unnecessary gamble
Do you know what else doesn't translate into points? Not scoring enough goals and repeatedly conceding them from set pieces at the other end. The shortcomings we suffer from aren't suddenly going to have gone away now, they were present largely due to some of the players, who we are now going to beat our head against the wall once more and persist with.
The fact you think half of those are decent signings show this is a discussion that isn't going anywhere. Two of them have played about 5 games, one hasn't played yet and the other is probably the most expensive mistake in the clubs history.
I think what’s so disappointing is the fact we actually started the transfer window well. An experienced English goalkeeper who has enjoyed playing for us before. Signing GD permantly when this seemed unlucky at the time of originally getting him on loan. A well-regarded Italian left-back to provide real competition in that troubled position. And a highly-regarded one for the future young centre half. So far, so good, and most of us were happy at that point because we felt certain these were just the prelude to more good signings, most noticeably in attack. So we’ve not had a non existent window, unlike for example Spurs. We’ve not had a terrible window in the sense of signing really bad players. We’ve just had a window that doesn’t yet feel complete, that feels unfulfilled in key positions, and a window that I believe leaves us dangerously exposed in attack. That’s the really disappointing thing, and I believe leaves us an injury or two away from being in huge trouble.
Which of them aren’t decent signings and why? Richarlison we got £44m for Foster we know is a great keeper Gray needs to be given a run of games starting with a strike partner before I write him off If Gray is the most contentious one, how have the others not been good signings?
Or on the other side of the fence, if you think it’s not as bad as some do then you are not allowed that view. There have been some good and bad points over the summer. We signed a new left back, a decent keeper and Delefeou. We didn’t sign a striker or a defender. Not great but not disastrous either
Spot on. Its about balance. And there are loads of factors which will relegate a club ahead of their performance in one transfer window.
I'm really not sure what our recruitment team does. They should have just gone for a nice fortnight in Cornwall and let everyone else get on with buying better players to improve their squads. We can cling to "stability", a slightly slimmer but overweight talisman, and a severely crocked midfielder who played half a dozen good games for us a year ago. I think we have just decided we can't really compete for players at this level, we'll cross our fingers and see what happens and sack the manager after 10 games when we're in the bottom 3.
I'd genuinely be OK with Gray and Deeney in rotation. Im just concerned about cover, especially if we go 2 up top. And a decent forward would lift everyone. Compared to fulham wolves and others we dont have inferior squads despite the doom mongerers.
No further in’s. The recruitment team went home hours ago. For a giggle, a few derisory offers were thrown around. We should never have spent all our money on Ken Serma.
Do you not think Chalobah and Delefeou are decent then? Looks like a fair list of players who have done well for us plus 2 that certainly have the ability. Jury out on Gray.
Most annoying part about today is seeing players were linked with signing for other clubs in the Prem, i.e Dendoncker, Sergio Rico, Bernard etc Fair play to Wolves and Fulham though, bet they're fans are over the moon.
As mentioned before I am very happy with the signings of Deulofeu and Foster, Masina could be good, as could Navarro and Sema, but they're all far less necessary than strengthening up front and at centre back, particularly Navarro when we already had Janmaat and Femenia. As I've said repeatedly, when we have completely failed to strengthen in two of the three main areas we desperately needed to (the other being left back), then yeah I consider that to be a disastrous transfer window.
You may well be right Nath. And if after 10 games we are encountering the same problems as last season then you have a point. The Coaching team we might hope has spotted this and can either train the players, change the tactics or use different players from within the squad and see if this improves the situation. Can you guarantee that say 5 new players would make this problem all go away?
I'm not convinced Fosu-Mensah would start for us at right-back, his concentration can lapse as much as any of our current defenders. He would have only been useful as a third-choice CB and I don't think Utd would have loaned him to a club where he'd have spent most his time on the bench.
Doesn't the fact that the club have been trying to sign players in various positions suggest that they think there's a problem too?
