The price does seem amazing but was always going to be much lower than Ake who has shown in 2 spells that he has what it takes to be a regular at this level. Nathan failed to earn a starting place at Burnley (and Napoli) and for some of our ex players that would have been taken as evidence that he wasn't good enough for the prem . It's a great price for someone with great potential but let's not assume he will fulfil that on day one.

If so how does that work? We list the price and give them first refusal? Or the buy back price is already agreed?

What does buy bavk actually mean?

 

No buyback apparently.

A buy-back clause is usually inserted into a deal if the selling club believes in a few years time they may want to (unsurprisingly) buy them back. The fee of the buy-back is agreed between the 2 teams (for instance Chelsea + us could say that they can buy Chalobah back for £15m) - this means that if Chelsea offer us £15m we are obliged to accept. Whether the player then actually accepts the move is of course up to him (but it'll usually mean a hefty pay increase).

With the way the transfer market is at the moment I can see more and more clubs like Chelsea + Man City including these clauses. Chelsea especially - imagine how much money they could've saved by selling Lukaku for £25m and having a buy-back of £55m. Barcelona do it a lot and have benefitted massively from it.

Yeah, although a journalist from the Standard is saying there's 100% a buyback and sell-on clause but has no details of figures. Personally, I'm amazed that Chelsea would sell him for that low when they could probably get more for him via a tribunal in a years time (remember Ings for 10m?) - so having a buyback would make sense from all sides (less so from our side but it's how we could've got such a low initial fee) - therefore think there probably is.

Full details of Chalobah deal from #cfc to #Watfordfc. Fee is £5.5m, plus there is a buy-back clause and sell-on clause.

Why would a player refuse to sign a new contract but then agree to be bought back? Could have just signed and then come on loan. Anyway I guess we will find out in time.

 

They don't have to buy him back next season. It's normally open ended. So if he flourishes and 3 years into his contract here Chelsea want him, then the bid has to be accepted.

 

i think chelsea will always punt for a buy back clause after their mistake with lukaku

 

A buy-back clause would be very much welcomed by all the Chelski fans currently in melt-down over this transfer. For that reason alone I hope there isn't one.
