It's a sensible option for a player who's capable of playing a multitude of positions, knows what the club is about and the area. Immense experience and hopefully a good role model for the younger players. I can't find a negative at all for a free transfer who will not be expecting crazy wages. Even if we only get one season out of him.
Last left back free transfer over 35 year old was Chris Powell, Ashley Young is a different kettle of fish, good for one season at least!
This is your fault IBB and Since63, you made me do it! "Please lock me away, don't allow Lazaar a way, here inside where I hide, with my Masina, I don't care what Inter say, we won't stay in the Prem without Young. And so I wait and in a while, I will see my true Young smile, he may come I know not when, when Ash does I'll know so Gino until then, Lock me away.... " Some truth in that last bit 2, 3, 4...
He would improve our squad depth but whether or not this is a good signing depends on the wages. If he becomes one of our top earners and it means we have to forego signings elsewhere then it's not a good idea. If he's prepared to take a massive pay cut as he actually loves Watford and genuinely wants to finish his career here then great, get him in.
Wants to come, wants to take a pay cut to finish his career here & has played regularly for the best side in Italy this season. He will play for the shirt whereas picking up some random bloke from Europe 3 years younger will not. Experience, passion, ability Sign him up
Researching his salary is all over the place. One website claims £120k p/w, another £91k p/w *This is an image from a media outlet 4 days ago, where supposedly he earns £50k p/w. *the media outlet is The Sun.
The only thing I have against this is the 2yr deal suggested. I’d much rather a 1yr deal with option of a further year. Yes he seems fit and able now - but Italian football is slower than the PL for sure and his legs could go very quickly - and/or we could go down after a year and we will have a high earner with a year left on his deal. Other than that, I don’t see any issues at all with bringing him back.
Yes I'm sorry. I've been singing the 'Young Ashley Young' version for a couple of weeks now interspersed with the 'Goodbye Kenilworth Road' one. Oddly enough the club I played at yesterday, the Warwick Boat Club had a Kenilworth Road nearby. Very disconcerting!
Young returning would bring back nightmares about what might have been if players like Smith and Robbo had never left. So many lost years. Get him in.
Yep. There is something very lazy about the "don't believe anything on Twitter" crowd. It shows that they don't understand how it actually works, given that all reputable news outlets link to their stories in tweets. If you take into account which publication someone works for, their number of followers and how specific the information is, you can make a judgement on how likely it is to be true. And with some British journalists you can also take into account their track record as some have consistently been right about Watford related stories. A prime example would be when The Recluse spotted a story last year before the Huddersfield game that Xisco had already agreed a deal to be our new coach and would be arriving the following week. A bloke who worked for a Georgian sports paper with a few thousand followers and the story was so specific and random that very unlikely to be made up.
Off the top of my head obviously Adam Leventhal, Sami Mokbel, John Percy and Fabrizio Romano, the guy who had the Young info the other night. Also Football Insider seem to be pretty decent, they reported on us going for Ivic before anyone else. I'm sure there are a couple of others that I've missed. None of these are really Watford specific apart from Adam Leventhal so you just have to hope something crops up at some point! Also, without looking like a @LouOrns fanboy, he's pretty good at finding news about us. Especially from Italy as we get mentioned over there quite often due to our Udinese links.
Twitter is like Youtube, you go there looking for one thing then an hour later you dont where you are or how you got there.
The majority of his articles seem to crop up well after the rumour or news has done the rounds on Twitter. He seems like a decent guy and I'm not having a dig at him, the Wobby just don't have the resources or contacts they used to have pre-Pozzo.
