Unless it was swung at a ferocious pace directly to the front of his head.

As for Mariappa, if he goes not only will he be missed on the pitch but off of it too. The bloke is a natural leader within the club.

Just because they are good on FM doesn't mean they would do a job for us. I wouldn't wipe my arse wwith Alan Smith but I imagine he wouldn't wipe his arse with the wages we'd be offering. Lovenkrands has got to be about 34.

He is, and frankly I'd take £3m with no extra loans or makeweights any day. Bassini needs his head examined if he's turned that down. With a week to go in the window we'll run out of time to find a replacement by next week as it is.

Alan Smith is utter crap, past it and absolutely the last sort of player we need, and the likes of Marveaux wouldn't come here in a billion years! That Ferguson obviously looks pretty skillful in that video, but it's hardly much to go on.

Lovenkrands is also old and past it.

I'd much rather we get as much cash as we can and spend the money elsewhere, rather than take less cash and restrict our options on who we can sign to Newcastle rejects.

I think you'll find most of them are pretty crap on FM..

Fair enough, I haven't really played this year's, no lower division jobs going currently, roll on the update.

Lovenkrands is 31 and very pacey.

One goal in every 2 games at this level (16 in 32).

He's 32 on Sunday, is nowhere near as pacey as he used to be and scored those goals at this level 2+ years ago in a Newcastle side that were far, far to good for this league, not an incredibly average Championship side like Watford. Personally I'd rather spend the money on a good lower league prospect or possibly even someone like Jason Puncheon (unlikely as that would be) than potentially waste more money on more over the hill oldies on their last legs. And again, as with Alan Smith, he wouldn't come here anyway and we probably couldn't afford him.

How much will he be demanding per week? Less than 'top earner' Iwelumo?

Just seen on the mirrors article bout mapps that sordells valued at £7million.... What a result if we have bigged him up that much ;)

Wow and to think I would've been happy with £8 million for the pair plus add ons.

Right this is what I don't understand. Who the hell do people think we're gonna get that'll be better than Mariappa?! You want to sell him for 3 million which quite frankly is pathetic and you'd then have us spend a week frantically trying to get a replacement who will be worse! He's one of the best centre backs in the league people, there aren't any better defenders out there that we can attract this month! Sell him in the Summer if someone stumps up the cash at which point we'll have the whole summer to search for someone.

    Spot on

Hes worth much more than £3m to us because we couldnt suitably replace him with that money

Look at the collection of dross the A. Young money was spent on, in recent history I can only see the Helguson money as an example of cashing in and then using the funds to effectively strengthen the squad.

Some of ours fans get excited about the prospect of million pound fees but in my experience its almost always better to keep the player (if possible).

  15. Hornpete

Your point about not being able to replace him is valid, but I think that if Taylor hadn't broken his toe, Mapps would already be gone.

If we wait til summer (and he doesn't sign a new contract) then he'll have only a year left forcing us to consider bids way under £3m.

WFC operates at a loss still? Yes or no? Because if we do, how can we be flippant about turning down good cash? The point may be it equates to 50k plus installments and add ons.

Marriappa is not the best defender in the league, in fact he's somewhat over-rated by a lot of us. Thinking own goals, communication with Loach and the number of stupid goals we give away, can't all be Doyleys fault?

As for replacing him if we do sell, you can think either Mirfin or Nosworthy and come up with 2 different answers.

I doubt we could afford the wages of even Newcastle's reserve players TBH...

According to Sky the bid was 700k with add-ons rising to 2 million which was quite rightly never going to be enough.

Have you seen the own goals? Hardly his fault! We all know Loach's communication is poor, its not just with Mariappa. Finally, the guy isn't superman, he can't cover every defensive position to stop us conceding! You can bet if he doesn't go this window the club will whack another year on his contract because of the interest we'll receive in the Summer. He's a watford boy, he'll know the club need as much money as possible from his sale.

Have heard Arsenal might be entering the race for Mapps.

  21. LLST

That was on football-rumours, I don't think he'd fit in there as he's not a great passer of the ball. I'm not sure we'd have to spend any money to replace Mapps as we have plenty of centre backs and we might as well use the opportunity to bring through the next one, i.e. Bennett or one of Hoban or Thompson and we'd still have Nosworthy, Mirfin and Taylor when he gets back from injury. We should be spending the money on a winger and a striker if he does go.

I got it off Twitter. Have you seen Mertesacker play? He passes the ball about ten yards and that's it, Mapps has got to be a better passer of the ball then him.

Mertesacker's only in the side to win headers though as he's at least 6'4".

I hope this gets sorted out one way or another soon, as this will have a major impact on players Watford want to sign. Only 6 days to get all business done now. Watford must have targets lined up, but can’t move unless they know how much money they have to play with.

I’ve heard Newcastle are pretty annoyed by Dyche’s comments regarding his son’s piggy bank, and that they are being ridiculed in the press over it. Dyche is going to be interviewed on TalkSport after 12pm today, about this topic. Should be interesting.

Sorry mate, can't find the link now, but it was on a Newcastle fan's forum. Dyche said that his son had more money in his piggy bank than Newcastle's first offer. It's apparently in the Daily Mirror and TalkSport (Richard Keys) was talking about it this morning. They're going to interview Dyche after 12pm today, so you should be able to hear it from the horses mouth.

Apparantly Sordell is £7 million rated now, that would be a good price. It seems from the attitude of Dyche and Bassini that if they don't get the offer they won't sell. I just hope they stand firm by this and don't buckle when a last hour bid comes in that is attractive but not worth it.

  31. hornetboy1

I've heard this also, which is a fantastic stance to take, and it will work in this window. However, Marriappa has only 18 months to run on his contract, and I think Sordell is the same, although I might be wrong there. Watford will have to offer new contracts or sell these players at the end of the season and may not quite have the bargaining power of now. Heaven forbid we go down, but if we did, we could not demand what we are asking for now. If the players commit themselves to Watford with signing new contracts then great, but I'm sure all this talk of Premier clubs sniffing around is bound to unsettle the players. Watford for sure hold all the Aces right now, but it could quickly all change in the summer. That is the gamble the club has to weigh up and take.

Was a great clearance, I was surprised he could move that fast. Would love to see an Emu vs. Mertesacker, Battle of the Slowest.

Would look like a scene out of a Guy Ritchie film, where everything moves in slow motion and there is total carnage.
