Don't get me wrong, I think Reading are a fantastic club to play for and one which Watford should model themselves on. Of course they have a good benefactor, but then so do we now.

I agree they will be paying Mariappa more in salary, but knowing Mapps, he is a real Watford boy, coming through the ranks and the club has finally got good owners with vision and the the ability to realise those ambitions. Although I can see all the benefits for the move, I am more than a little surprised he actually went seeing as we are now on the up.

That may make sense to someone that doesn't see further than his nose, but Mapps is an intelligent guy and he would have looked beyond that.

Take Sordell, and although Bolton is another great club to be at, the Premiership experience didn't exactly work out for him.

Or maybe he just wants to test himself in the Premier League? Thinking into things a bit too much.

Not really...... The new owners and management team said "when" not "if" we get promoted. If you believe in that, then you will believe we will get promoted. What better way is there than to get promoted with your home club?

If you don't believe in that, then you would probably look to move elsewhere.

Why would he bother staying with us for at least another two years when he can play in the Premier League now with Reading who are also on the up? He won't have to relocate, will double his wages at least and will leave Watford on very good terms. It doesn't mean that he doesn't believe in the project at all but I'll let you continue thinking that.

Yes, but "When" could be 1 year, 2 years, 5 years, 10 years. Whilst 26(?) is not old, he could be waiting around for years and lose the best years of his career.
I have no resentment of him going now. Good Luck to him.

Footballers have such relatively short careers. Nobody can blame a player for wanting to play in the PL next season, rather than another season in the Championship with no guarantees of promotion at any time. Disappointed he is going, and with the signal it sends out at the start of the Zola era, but such is football.

I think it may be a sign that he doesn't really believe in the project, but of course I may be giving him credit where it's not due. Maybe he can't wait anymore and wants to play in the Premier League NOW with all the money that brings. It could just be a 9 month experience, but that's the choice he has made.

The main point I was making is he may regret this in a year's time, if Watford are promoted and Reading are relegated. Just for the want of a season, he could have been leading his home town club into the Premier League.

I believe that the new owner of Reading is the son of a billionaire, he is not a billionaire. The owner of Watford before Bas is a billionaire I didn't see him throwing money at us. As for players having a short career Mapps will probably earn more in the next year than the average person in their working live, who knows he may have not got a place at Watford next season

"Brian McDermott is confident Adrian Mariappa will be a Reading player on Monday and claims to be closing on another of his top transfer targets.

Sky Sports revealed on Friday that the Royals were looking to lure Mariappa away from Championship outfit Watford.

An agreement has now been put in place between the two clubs, with the 25-year-old set to complete a switch to the Madejski Stadium once he has passed a medical.

"We have got a formality to take care of on Monday and I think once that's done and dusted we are hopeful of getting him signed on Monday," Royals boss McDermott told Sky Sports News HD.

"He's a character, a fantastic character. He has done really well for Watford over a period of time.

"For a young man he has played a lot of games, he's got good pace and as a character he will fit in with what we are trying to do here - as has been the case with all of the players I have signed."

Nottingham Forest defender Chris Gunter will have a medical at Reading today ahead of a £2.3m move to the Premier League newcomers.

Gunter is a centre back I do believe so could this mean that the Mapps deal might be off?

'Reading have signed central defender Adrian Mariappa from Watford on a three-year contract, according to Sky Sports News.

The 25-year-old Jamaica international has joined the Premier League new boys after agreeing personal terms and passing a medical.

Mariappa had been at Watford since May 2005 and made 247 appearances during his seven seasons with the Hornets.'
