    Yup.

I'm a bit surprised the government keeps going with this idea of setting out 'tests' that have to be met to do something. Throughout the whole pandemic they've reneged on tests previously set out, or added to them midway through, or made them so vague as to be useless. I'd be amazed if these 4 tests turn out differently. In fact the standard for passing the tests seems higher than ever. Almost impossibly high...

It'll be very interesting to see what happens at the back end of March when the coronavirus laws have to be renewed. If numbers continue to plummet and the vaccine drive continues successfully, the government will struggle to get the laws renewed without opposition support I suspect.

When we stopped on January 4 all my tennis friends and I played "Boris Return". I went for March 29.
Most thought it would be earlier and one or two are still hoping it will be sooner even though every news outlet is saying the same thing.

It was rumored on BBC breakfast that you'll be able to meet someone on a park bench for coffee, but you won't be able to play a round of golf, even on your own.
I don't see the logic on that one from a reducing transmission point of view.

When I play golf I'm generally yards deep into the shrubbery and of no transmission threat to anyone I play with.

I walked the local golf course with Mrs D at the weekend, and saw plenty of people doing the same including lots of families allowing their kids to play in the bunkers, run on the greens, ride bikes on the greens etc etc. But golfers who can easily keep apart are banished. It's f***ing bonkers.

Are they planning to give the jab to kids at all? I know it's not been tested and authorised for under 18s, but is that eventually the plan?

This would have been covered in the Phase IV trails (number crunching of long term data). I'm assuming in time it will be if there is a clinical benefit/need to children being vaccinated and long time effects of the various jabs are studied.

Thanks, so potentially they won't bother vaccinating kids? I know the stats of kids that get seriously ill with it are very small and if adults have had the jab (apart from the pathetic anti-vax crew), then there's no need.

So really after Easter things will start getting back to normal which is when they did say they hope to have most people who are vulnerable and elderly vaccinated.

Obviously have to wait a bit longer to do things inside.

Encouraging news about the vaccine too.

The problem is kids getting infected and cooking up variants that get past Grandad’s vaccine derived immunity, ok Grandma’s then.

I don't think it's a coincidence that a lot of things are due to reopen on April 12, the same date as schools' summer terms begins. They clearly don't want too many people mixing over the Easter holiday, and in line with Scotland's request for people not to book Easter holidays, people in England will not be permitted to holiday over Easter.

Talks about vaccine certificates for certain activities.

How's that gonna work then? Healthy, low risk people have put up with all the lockdown to protect elderly and vulnerable people. Now those groups have been vaccinated, but low risk haven't, is there gonna be freedom for the boomers and oldiewonks, whilst under 50s get restrictions because they aren't in line to get a jab for some time?

I imagine it's something they want to get in place for August onwards once everyone has been offered at least one dose of the vaccine, otherwise it'd be epically unfair. International travel, if it happens, is going to be the starkest divide in late spring/early summer as I suspect other countries will only accept people who've had both doses and by that point it's likely to be 50+ only who qualify.

    From this morning’s Grauniad:

“the Equality and Human Rights Commission said that vaccine certificates could lead to “unlawful discrimination”.

They added that while returning to normal life is “a priority for most of us”, the certificates should not be introduced because of the risk they will “disadvantage people who have not received the vaccine, unless they can be shown to be justified”.”

Think this one still has some way to run....

I think that this is only a valid argument while there are people that have not been offered the vaccine.

Once we all have I think certificates/passports should be issued as they will almost certainly be a requirement of entry to many countries. I don't see why the maturity should have their ability to travel curtailed because of a minority of antivaxers.

The discrimination argument cannot apply once we've all had the same opportunity.

Yes, as UEA said above, any certification should really only come into play from end July onwards. Still, even then libertarians would presumably argue that it remains discriminatory against those who choose not to be vaccinated since vaccination is not mandatory. However, as “unvaccinated” isn’t a protected characteristic under the Equally Act, that doesn’t have any legal legs. But I would still expect the Tory backbenchers to kick up a fuss about it.

    I missed UAE's comment! Apologies.

If they did refuse to provide a certificate once everyone has been offered the vaccine, and that prevented people travelling, then I think the outrage from the public would soon drown out any grumbling backbenchers!

Agreed. But there may be a distinction to be drawn between certification for international travel, and for popping down to your local.
